Joan Barnett faked daughter's death for Costa Rica Vacation

Joan Barnett, a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management, pretended that her daughter died over spring break in 2010, the NY Daily News reports (h/t The Jane Dough). Barnett, it seems, was so determined to spend two and a half weeks in the popular Central American tourist destination that she had one of her daughters call the school and lie about her sister having a heart attack, even providing a fake certificate of death as backup.

So not only does she fake her death, she has her other daughter help her. Pathetic!

Given the amount of vacation allotted for teachers, it may be surprising that Barnett took the risk. Compared to a national average of just 14 days of vacation time a year, one of the perks of working in education is more time off from holidays, including summer break.

Something tells me she met a hunk and wanted to return asap hahahaha

I wonder how she would explain the daughter's re-animation if someone they knew ran into her? Was it an imaginary daughter or a real one? Makes me wonder how she talked her other daughter into going along with the plan.

I really hope law enforcement/the court releases a copy of the fake certificate to the public. I also really hope that it's some laughably obvious forgery made on some free "you're the greatest ____"-etc. certificate generator, and comes with telltale trial version watermark.

I wonder how the "dead" daughter feels about her relationship with mom and sister after the fact.
