Steve Karr Is A Diddler, Arrested For Sexually Abusing Boys 7-11yos

    TUSCALOOSA - AL -
People in the 'Fleetwod' area of Cottondale are shocked that one of their neighbors is accused of sexually abusing young boys for a period of 30 years.
53-year old Steve William Karr faces 25 sex charges. Tuscaloosa County Sheriff investigators arrested Karr at his home on Rifle Range Road. They say so far 11 victims between the ages of seven and fifteen have come forward.

Authorities believe Karr enticed the young victims by taking them on adventures. People in the community say the parents just thought Karr was being a good guy. "The kids loved him because he bought them stuff. He took them boating...four wheel riding," says Sheila Beard who lives a couple of doors from Karr.
Beard says while they're surprised, on one hand -- on the other..they're not. "I mean everybody had suspicions because that's all he associated with young boys."

Sheriff Investigators were tipped about suspicious activity surrounding Karr in 2002, but say they only recently received enough evidence to present to a grand jury.

Authorities liken the case to the Penn State situation and believe that more than the 11 victims so far may come forward.

As of Tuesday evening, Karr remained in the Tuscaloosa County jail with a bond set at $1 million dollars. He's charged with seven counts of first-degree sodomy, 16 counts of first-degree sexual abuse and two counts of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12.

Am I wrong when I say that the parents of these kids need their heads examined? If a single guy offered
to take my son on a camping trip without me and my husband my antenna would poke his eye out. Some may just be too trusting by nature and some just lazy, I imagine. I'm just glad this freak is off the streets. God help those poor boys.

Officials with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office are calling these allegations the largest-scale victimization that the department has ever seen. Investigators believe Karr sexually abused at least 11 boys between the ages of 7 and 15 over a 30 year period. Karr would befriend the families of the young boys. Karr's neighbors on Rifle Range Road say they often saw him with the boys.

"He would take them hunting, boating, four wheeler riding," says Sheila Beard. Beard says her family have lived in the neighborhood for years and she says Karr seemed to be a nice guy. She also worked at the gas station on the corner of Rifle Range Road, where she says Karr would often drop in to buy the young boys candy.

"That's all he ever hung around with was little boys--no little girls, no adults," Beard says. "We all had our suspicions, but we couldn't say anything because we didn't know." Beard says when she saw the children with Karr they never looked afraid or upset.

"They loved him. He would buy them gifts and take them on trips. They loved him."

Misty Creel with DHR's Child Abuse and Neglect Unit says it's often very difficult to find any definite signs that a child is being sexually abused, and there are often no physical symptoms at all.

"The main thing is a sudden change in your child,"Creel explains. Creel says children who are being abused may sometimes begin doing poorly in school or start acting out, sometimes sexually. The most important thing is to keep an open line of communication with the children.

Creel also says she would be wary of any adult offering a child gifts or special treatment that is not being given to anyone else. She cautions parents to speak to their children about the special behavior and approach the adult to better understand the situation.

They always seem like "such a nice guy". People never seem to want to think ill of the "nice guys". It would be so much easier if they looked and publicly acted like the monsters they really are. Like @Bridget217, I would be suspicious of any adult paying too much "special attention" to my kid(s).

I'm really not sure what could be done if it was some other kid and there wasn't really any proof. Would the parents even believe anyone who questioned their kid's relationship with a suspected pervert? What seems obvious to many was occurring and they didn't see it.

Completely agree with you. I have my antenna up when one of my sons friends' family wants to take him somewhere. I want to know where they are going, how long they are staying and for him to call me on his way home. Orrrr maybe that is just me being too over-protective?

You know, it's a really fucked up world we live in. I've been so protective over my daughter, it's only occured to me in the last couple of years that I might have to be MORE protective over my son.

Yeah, boy or girl, they are in equal danger as young kids from pedos because their crime is one of power, not as much as sexual. Most pedos molest both genders and don't necessarily even have a preference.

O-Kayyyyyy> I hope this little tidbit is from a parent who kept their kids away from this freak. Fair enough, you can't report suspicions, but you can still (O.o) pay attention to those red flags and protect your own kid?

I mean he said it right there - "Suspicions!" That's how I form judgments! I suspect that cliff would kill me if I jumped off it!
