For Fuck's sake! Is this a damn trend now or what?
<sigh> They found the toddler in South Carolina. I was really hoping on that note there would be some 'quiet' for awhile.
What is the best we can hope for? At least that the baby's body is found? I can't believe thats what it has come too...

I don't believe baby Ayla will be found alive and well unless she's w/ other family on his side.

Maine toddler Ayla Reynolds missing since Saturday
    December 19, 2011 10:51 AM
    (CBS/AP)
WATERVILLE, Maine. - A search is underway in Waterville, Maine for a 20-month old toddler that has gone missing from her bedroom in her father's home, police say
CBS Boston reports police and firefighters have been investigating since Saturday morning when Justin DiPietro, the father of toddler Ayla Reynolds, called police to report his daughter was not in her bed and could not be located.
The little girl's mother, Trista Reynolds, filed paperwork seeking sole custody of the toddler a day before the girl went missing. She said she wants answers from "the last man to see my daughter."Trista Reynolds told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she and Ayla's father did not get along, and that she hadn't told him she had filed the court paperwork on Thursday."I've had no contact with him; he's had no contact with me. All I know is he's the last man to see my daughter, and all I want to know where she is," she said Monday.
    [...]
Police spoke with Ayla's father, mother, and other family members about the disappearance and say all parties were cooperative.
Police Chief Joseph Massey said all possibilities were being investigated, including abduction. "Everything is open. Everything is on the table," he said.

20 month old Ayla Reynolds goes missing from home overnight

WATERVILLE — Search parties combed a Waterville neighborhood Sunday, but as evening fell they still had not found a found a 20-month-old girl reported missing Saturday morning.

Ayla Reynolds, dressed only in pajamas and wearing a soft cast from a broken arm, was last seen sleeping in her bed at 8 p.m. Friday, Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey told reporters at a news conference Sunday afternoon. The FBI has been called in to assist state and local police and the Maine Warden Service in the search.

Two search dogs, one from the Warden Service and one from Maine State Police, were at the house where the toddler lives for much of the day Sunday.

Ayla was reported missing from her Violette Avenue home by her father, Justin DiPietro, about 9 a.m. Saturday, when he found her bed empty. The girl’s mother, Trista Reynolds, is living in the Portland area without a permanent address, Massey said. Both parents have been interviewed and are cooperating with the investigation, he said.

Several adults were at the home Friday night when Ayla went to bed. At least one of them was not a family member, he said.

Massey said “everything is on the table,” and abduction has not been ruled out.

“We covered quite a large area up there. Unfortunately we were not successful in finding little Ayla,” he told reporters. “That is our primary focus, to find a 20-month-old little girl who now has been missing at least 40-45 hours and bring her home safely.”

Ayla was last seen wearing green one-piece pajamas with polka dots and the words “Daddy’s Princess” on them. She is 2 feet 9 inches tall, has short, thin blond hair, and weighs approximately 30 pounds. Her left arm is in a sling and soft splint.

Massey would not say if a door had been left open at the house or if there had been any uninvited entries into the house. He said Ayla broke her arm in an accidental fall three weeks ago.

Looks like the mother lost custody of the daughter. Although it doesn't say why. Never a good sign of the family dynamic.

Whatever. I get so tired of you people saying that cause the mom doesn't have custody it "looks bad", or "is troubling" or blah, blah blah.

I don't automatically assume the mom is a sorry piece of shit for losing custody of her child, but you have to admit lots of moms can't even come close to meeting whatever requirements there are by DSS or whatever agency it is. Sometimes, a mother will give up her child b/c she honestly believes that the child would be better off with someone else, maybe the father. Then, there are the men like my brother in law who stood up in court and lied that his wife was living "somewhere in the state of Florida" when she was sitting in their home totally unaware that he had gotten the divorce and custody granted that day. She found the divorce papers in the glove box of his truck.... on Mother's Day. Asshole.

It doesn't just say she doesn't have custody or that she gave up custody, it says the baby was REMOVED from her custody. I took that to have a different meaning.

Good video of the mom. And she answers why she was with the dad. She also is upset about since she's been with dad she broke her arm, she's gotten sick. She wants to go search and the police tell her no. She wants to hold her, hug her protect her. Very sad. I feel for her.

    Who said that @Nell ?
And I saw on news today mom was on with her dad(baby granddad) and moms got joint custody and had filed for sole custody the day before b/c of dads life style (but dad didnt know mom had done that)
So whoever said mom lost custody is wrong baby was with both parents on joint custody terms for now and mom had her most of the time

I'm sorry, I really did do a search before I posted!
This is about a mile from my house; about half a mile from my daughters school. We are all praying for Ayla. She reminds me of my girl when she was that age. Its mentioned in one of the articles that she was taken from mom when she was sent to rehab and now lives in a motel. I usually try to give parents the benefit of the doubt, but when I watched the interview... well, she didn't seem upset enough to me. Maybe that's just how she *is* but it just struck me strange. The grandfather, I felt really bad for him. :(

Did you see my video in post #39? I thought she seemed sincere. It appears so far she lived with mom and grandparents most of the time. I believe her when she said she thought she was doing the right thing when she couldn't take care of her.

I would like more information. Was she exactly "taken" from her? I don't know. If they all lived with the grandparents, why wouldn't she have just stayed with the grandparents? Why did the father take on full time primary?

It's questionable for either parent to lose custody, don't care if it's mom or dad. Since we no shit, it means nothing until some facts come out. I hope there is no past abuse but that would be no surprise.

And as was mentioned. I heard on the news they had JOINT custody. I posted how she hadn't told him yet, baby goes missing a day after she filed for sole custody, be he didn't know about her filing.

But she hadn't seen her in a month. They may have had joint legal, but he had primary residential.

Authorities today searched a stream near the house where a 20-month-old child from Waterville, Maine went missing on Friday.

Ayla Reynolds was last seen in her bedroom at 8 p.m. on Friday, said Stephen McCausland, Maine State Police spokesman. Her father, Justin DiPietro, reported her missing when he realized she was gone the next morning. Her parents live separately, McCausland said.

“She remains missing,” McCausland said. “The search is being concentrated on the Messalonskee Stream.”

A Maine Warden Service plane flew over the stream today to search the area, he said.

McCausland said the stream is “rapid flowing” and “very close to the house.”

There are 75 investigators working on the toddler’s disappearance, which has been classified as a missing persons case, McCausland said.

Police also seized two cars connected to Reynolds’ father and planned to process them for possibile forensic evidence, the Portland Press Herald reported on its website.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey told reporters this afternoon that the Reynolds investigation is considered a missing persons case, not a homicide investigation. Police have said it was possible the toddler was abducted, the Portland newspaper reported.

Also today, the child’s mother, Trista Reynolds, told ABC News that she filed for sole custody of her child on Thursday, one day before Ayla Reynolds disappeared. However, she told ABC News that the child’s father did not know she wanted to restrict his access to the child.
    http://www.boston.com/Boston/metrode...TFP/index.html

Sources report that officials have began searching Messalonskee Stream, a well-known body of water near the family home in Waterville, Maine. Ayla Reynolds, age 20 months, was reported missing by her father on Saturday morning. She was last seen the prior night at around 10:00 p.m. The reports coming in about the missing tot are suspicious to say the least. First of all, her description includes a broken arm, in a soft cast. The family of the missing girl's mother say that the little girl was covered in bruises when they last saw her. Could abuse have led to her disappearance?

    What happened to Ayla Reynolds?

This mysterious disappearance is very much like the disappearance of baby Lisa Irwin. The baby was last seen the night before her disappearance, and suspicion is already beginning to mount against the girl's parents. Much like Lisa Irwin, the girl is reported to have been abducted from her crib.

Hopefully the missing girl is not found in the stream, and she is somewhere alive and safe. This is all just so tragic, like all cases of missing children. Hopefully the parents are in no way connected to this disappearance, as that seems to be way too popular in the news these days. A happy ending would be nice sometimes.

A sport utility vehicle belonging to Ayla Reynolds’ father and another car were seized by police Monday at the Violette Avenue home of missing 20-month-old Ayla Reynolds as the investigation into her disappearance entered its third day.
Police, who have said it’s possible the toddler was abducted, said Monday that no one has been arrested in connection with the case.
The two seized vehicles were in the driveway at 29 Violette Ave., where Ayla lives with her father, 24-year-old Justin DiPietro. The SUV, a 1996 Ford Explorer with a sticker on the rear windshield for the United States Marine Corps, is registered to DiPietro, according to records from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The car, a 2002 Hyundai, is registered to a Portland woman whose name is not being made public.
Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey disclosed little new information during an afternoon news conference Monday, acknowledging only that a neighbor had reported hearing a motor vehicle arrive at the girl’s home Friday night.
Massey has said there were several adults at the home Friday night when Ayla went to bed. At least one of them was not a family member, he said.
“This is a missing person case,” Massey said, declining to share additional details.
Ayla Reynolds, wearing a soft cast from a broken arm, was last seen sleeping in her bed at about 8 p.m. Friday. DiPietro reported her missing Saturday at 8:51 a.m. when he found an empty bed, police said.
The girl’s mother, Trista Reynolds, 23, is living in Portland without a permanent address, Massey said.
Reynolds told ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Monday that she had filed paperwork seeking sole custody of the toddler Thursday, the day before the toddler was last seen in her bed in Waterville.
“I’ve had no contact with him; he’s had no contact with me. All I know is he’s the last man to see my daughter, and all I want to know is where she is,” she said.
Reynolds had filed a complaint against DiPietro for determination of paternity, parental rights and responsibilities and child support, according to documents obtained Monday from Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.
Reynolds said she hasn’t talked to DiPietro since Ayla was reported missing. The two live apart, with DiPietro in Waterville and Reynolds in Portland.
DiPietro could not be contacted for comment and police were not allowing anyone near the Violette Street home.

    Her nickname is ‘Buggy’
Becka Hanson, Trista’s mother and Ayla’s grandmother, said in a telephone interview that she believes the child should be with her in Portland, not with her father in Waterville.
She said the state Department of Health and Human Services took custody of the child in October and turned her over to DiPietro.
“My daughter went into rehab; me and my oldest daughter had Ayla, and DHS had her removed from us to go with her dad,” Hanson, 45, said. “I believe DHS did that because they don’t like my family. They had no reason to take Ayla.”
Police have said the child’s arm was broken in an accidental fall about three weeks ago, but have declined to provide further details.
“Ayla is – was – a happy little girl; she enjoyed being with me and her mom,” Hanson said. “She always had a smile on her face, always. I’m trying hard not to think that (something bad) happened to her. Her nickname is Buggy – that’s my Buggy.
“She was born April 4. She was born on Easter Sunday, 2010. I want my granddaughter home. I want her safe. She needs to come home and be with us.”
Hanson said Ayla has a little brother, Raymond, nine months old, who lives with Trista Reynolds. They are staying in a motel in South Portland, Hanson said.
    Massive search
Waterville police, Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service and the FBI are conducting the investigation, which began with a 911 call to police Saturday, some 10 to 12 hours after Ayla was last seen.
As the search entered its third day, a Maine Warden Service plane circled overhead and wardens searched a stream near the father’s house. Residents joined in canvassing the neighborhood over the weekend for any signs of Ayla.
Some residents joined in the search. Carrie Harvey, who lives nearby, found a sippy cup lid in the neighborhood and turned it over to a warden.
“It’s sad. Christmas is right around the corner. My heart cries out for that lady,” Harvey, a mother of five, said of Ayla’s mother.
Massey said 70 law enforcement officers worked the search Monday, including 25 game wardens, who trolled the waters of icy Messalonskee Stream, a few blocks from the house, in an airboat and circled the area in an airplane.
“It’s a very open case,” Massey said. “We don’t want to miss anything along the way; we’re looking at every lead and all possibilities.”
Massey said the child’s parents are cooperating with the investigation.
He would not speculate if the child was still alive. Overnight temperatures have dipped into the low teens the last few days.
At the house and grounds at 29 Violette Ave., where the toddler was staying with her father, a mobile Maine State Police evidence response unit was parked in the driveway. Investigators took photos of the side door to the gray, vinyl-sided home in the quiet Waterville neighborhood; two state troopers and Waterville police officers were stationed outside.
The house is DiPietro’s childhood home, and he moved there four to six weeks ago, a neighbor said.
“It’s just so sad, so sad. I hope we end up with a live child,” said Ellen Paul, a retired Colby College employee who lives across the street from DiPietro’s home. “I’m heartbroken for anybody to go through that kind of pain.”
A state police special crime incident command and communications truck was in full operation in the Waterville City Hall parking lot. A command post was set up inside the city council chambers.
Massey would not say Monday if investigators suspected forced entry into the home or if they found blood or other forensic evidence in or around the house.
The search, he said, was concentrating around Messalonskee stream. He said police have received some important leads from the public.
“The focus, obviously is to bring Ayla Home – everybody is hoping for that,” Massey said.

A neighbor told police they heard a vehicle pull up to the home late at night. Massey said they are looking into how this could be connected to the case.
Trista Reynolds, Ayla's mother, spoke with News 8's Jim Keithley Monday afternoon. She said she hasn't seen her daughter in more than a month. "I'm really starting to feel, that as a mother, that somebody in his family or himself, has done something with Ayla," Reynolds said.
Police say Ayla's family is cooperating with the investigation. They said there were several adults in the home Friday night, one of whom was not a family member.
"I'm really starting to feel, that as a mother, that somebody in his family or himself, has done something with Ayla."
    - Trista Reynolds, Mother
"We were able to speak to them at length -- both the dad and the mom and some other relatives -- and they were, as far as we can see, very forthcoming with information," said Massey.
Reynolds said she filed paperwork last Thursday to receive full custody of her daughter.
"He (referring to Ayla's father) didn't know I went to file. He'll know now. But I never told him and no one told him," said Reynolds.
Reynolds said she has not spoken to DiPietro since their daughter disappeared.

Whitney Raynor, her mother's stepsister, said Monday that welfare agents had placed Ayla with her father in November while the mother was in rehab for substance abuse. The girl had bruises after being in her father's care, Raynor said, in addition to a broken arm three weeks ago.

"Our biggest fear is that he lost his temper and something happened. We're trying not to think about that, but in the back of our minds it's our biggest fear," Raynor said from Portland, where Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, lives.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey has said the broken arm was from an accidental fall. The girl was last seen Friday night wearing green one-piece pajamas with polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" on them; she had a soft cast on her left arm.

Spokesman Steve McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety said police learned of the girl's cast on her arm from either DiPietro or guests at his home Friday night. A message left with Massey wasn't immediately returned.

I mustve seen same news as you b/c she didnt even have a slight air of crying about her
But like you said we dont know her maybe thats how she is or in shock

I don't see a 20 month old managing a door knob very well, and a with a cast, soft or not, on her arm, that would restrict or limit arm movements too. Now I know that some 20 months old could probably turn a door knobs, but most could not easily and without fiddling with it for a few minutes.

I remember when Corey was about 2 and I locked myself out of the house and him inside the house, trying to get him to turn the door knob was crazy, he could turn it but not far enough to actually open the door. so I'm on the outside saying, turn the knob, baby and he's on the inside saying, okay and turning the knob back and forth just not far enough. so it took a minute, several minutes in fact.

So I don't see her getting out of the house thru the doors by herself, at least not easily and not quick. I see her getting up in the middle of the night and playing in the toilet or kitchen cabinets or climbing into bed with daddy, most babies don't go straight for the front yard into the dark. But I could be wrong, I know.

Exactly, @cubby , the only thing I could come up with is maybe she saw some pretty twinkling Christmas lights and went out to see them closer, but as cold as it was that night I can't see that happening.

The pajamas she was wearing made me go hmmm.... it seems almost, well, contrived, that she would be wearing pj's that happened to say something like "Daddy's Princess" just before she goes missing. Maybe that's just my paranoia coming out, I don't know.

It's tough to drop my kid at school, and be able to see the Messalonskee Stream that they've been searching, and have to drive by the road she lived on on my way to work. =/ I'm still praying she's safe.

Sigh, nothing new as of yet; there's a vigil being set up at a nearby church tomorrow night, I'm hoping to be able to go...

Nearly 80 police officers State Troopers, The Maine Warden Service the FBI are all working this case all while strangers hold a vigil praying for Ayla 's safe return.
State Police forensic specialists worked late into the night, searching Ayla's fathers home.
They checked windows and doors, all points of entry at the Violette Avenue home.
Across the street, concerned citizens who don't even know Ayla stood with candles praying for the child.
Police say her father Justin DiPietro reported her missing Saturday morning; Ayla was living at his home while her mother stayed in the Portland area.
Investigators say while they search, all family members have been cooperative and they have some encouraging leads but no suspects.
Today, police towed two cars from the father's home, but wouldn't say why.
Before investigators lost the light Monday, Wardens searched Mesolonskee stream, which is just t a few blocks from her home and used a plane to get a wider look.
They say the stream was a likely place to look because of its proximity to the house, but would not say if they believe the child is alive, simply saying the case is wide open.
"I don't want to speculate on any theories. I want to emphasize this is open we're not pulled in any one direction or another and the challenges are many as you may imagine in the investigate in a missing child," said Waterville Police Chief Massey.
"I just think where it's in our community we have an obligation to support them it's a very young girl and she's so innocent and it's not one of those things you expect to happen in your community it's just really sad," said Cheryl Hunter from Waterville.
Ayla's mother filed for custody a day before her father reported her missing.
Police would not say anything about that, just that they're monitoring the situation.
Wardens say they expect to be out at the scene again tomorrow and back in the stream to search for the little girl.
Police are encouraging people to continue to call with any information, grateful for the now national media attention hoping it can help the case.

I don't mean to start shit, I really don't, but I have a take on this from my own experience. I lost custody of my first for three months. The ex had money, I didn't. He could and did hire all the psychologists, therapists, lawyers and private eyes he wanted. I had no money, no health insurance and lived in a student neighborhood because that's all I could afford. I had a pro bono attorney, period.

this is a common move for abusive partners; take the kids to hurt and humiliate the mom. I was a good mom, I love my daughter and getting her out of an abusive marriage was the right thing to do. He had her for less than 3 weeks and she got a broken collarbone. I put my pride in my back pocket and called on my family for the first time. Someone who knew someone in local government stepped up for me, after waiting for the wheels of the court to turn, I got her back. Then he just settled for threatening, stalking and generally making my life a living hell.

I don't know the mom or the dad, just wanted to remind y'all that moms losing custody isn't always because of neglect, abuse or allegations of drug use and whoring. Maybe mom really wasn't able to take good care of baby, maybe a lot of things; but sometimes it's a case of who has the money and the spite.

Other than saying the search had expanded, Massey had no other new information about the case.
The toddler's father reported her missing on Saturday morning when he went into her room to check on her and she wasn't there.

Justin DiPietro issued a statement Tuesday night. In it he stated, "I have no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible."
DiPietro wrote the statement, gave it to Waterville Police, who handed it to a Morning Sentinel reporter, said Stephen McCausland of the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The Morning Sentinel, which is located in downtown Waterville, posted the statement on its website on Tuesday night.
"I have shared every piece of information possible with police. Contrary to some statements floating around out there, I have been in in communication with Ayla's mother over the last couple weeks," DiPietro said.

Massey said police have followed up on more than 100 leads. He said Dumpsters, ballparks and nearby woods have been searched. Messalonskee stream was also lowered so game wardens could do a flyover of the body of water. Massey would not reveal if the search effort has produced any signs of Ayla.
Police plan to hold another news conference Wednesday at 2 p.m.

DCF taking her from the maternal g.parent could be as simple as him saying "I'm her father she belongs to me" and them giving her to him because of joint custody. Probably, she would have been handed over to him by police if he called them citing the joint custody. And also a judge if he petitioned the court.

God, I want this to turn out to be a parental/family abduction so much. She looks very much like my 20-month-old cousin. I would absolutely LOSE MY SHIT if something happened to that baby. I wonder how many extended family members/friends are hurting because of whatever asshole did this. :(

@cubby I think some kids can and some can't. When my son was that age he used to sneak outside while everyone was still asleep. I had a pool and it always worried me that he would somehow find a way into the pool even though the ladder was locked (I know, I am weird.) Anyway, it got so bad that I had to install a hook and eye lock on the top of the front and back door, high enough so he couldn't reach it. THAT put a stop to his wanderings LOL
