I had a pro bono attorney, period.

this is a common move for abusive partners; take the kids to hurt and humiliate the mom. I was a good mom, I love my daughter and getting her out of an abusive marriage was the right thing to do. He had her for less than 3 weeks and she got a broken collarbone. I put my pride in my back pocket and called on my family for the first time. Someone who knew someone in local government stepped up for me, after waiting for the wheels of the court to turn, I got her back. Then he just settled for threatening, stalking and generally making my life a living hell.

I don't know the mom or the dad, just wanted to remind y'all that moms losing custody isn't always because of neglect, abuse or allegations of drug use and whoring. Maybe mom really wasn't able to take good care of baby, maybe a lot of things; but sometimes it's a case of who has the money and the spite.
A majority of parents, male and female, lose custody of their kids because the ex has money and they don't. It is such a bullshit way to use the court system @carolinablue but in this case it says the mom lost custody because she had a drug problem and was in rehab.

I am curious if one of the mother's family members, or the mother herself, thought the child was in danger so they hatched a plot to snag her. The mother said she was filing for custody but in one of the articles it says she doesn't have a residence, odds were against her getting custody since it is harder to get custody away from the parent who already has custody. Usually the custodial parent has to be proven unfit and since the mother doesn't even have anywhere to live, it just makes me wonder if the custody suit was an effort to deflect attention from herself in the kidnapping.

I am probably wrong of course, I am wrong occasionally haha
I love my mom because she loves me and she is a great mom she loves me so much she bought me a psp that stands for playstation portable.

From my son, Mother's Day 2012.

There were just reports that crime scene tape has been put around the father's house, and they have dispatched cadaver dogs to search around another area not too far from the home, Webb Road, which is near the airport and has some wooded area surrounding it. The AG was at the home today, left not too long ago... there's a press conference at 2.

    Still praying... :(

I don't believe baby Ayla will be found alive and well unless she's w/ other family on his side.
Elfears was saying the toddler that was missing from South Carolina, Jason Burton, was found, not that Alya had been found.

Search for Ayla Reynolds being done in specific places
NECN: Marnie Maclean) – It’s day seven in the search for missing toddler Ayla Reynolds. The vigil in Portland is set to begin at 4.30 Friday afternoon. Ayla Reynold’s mother, grandfather and several members of the community are expected to attend.

Detectives and evidence technicians have left the home on Violet Avenue. Just one lone police officer sits watch outside.

The effort is scaled back, and now the search is being done in specific areas targeted by detectives.

The Waterville police department released a statement saying the investigation is ongoing and includes the painstaking review of an unprecedented amount of information which has been gathered to date.

Trista Reynolds traveled to Waterville where she prayed for her daughter’s safe return. In an interview with NBC’s Today Show, she also shared her concerns about Ayla’s father before the toddler went missing.

Teams of investigators are stepping up their focus on the house where a 20-month old girl went missing seven days ago as they use cadaver dogs to search local fields, streams and waterways.
Ayla Reynolds, of Waterville, Maine, was reported missing from her bed on Saturday morning by her father Justin DiPietro, who told police he last saw her when he put her to bed the previous night.
Police are following up more than 200 tips from the public on Ayla - while police, firefighters, game wardens, marine patrol officers and civilian volunteers have joined the search effort.
Investigators put up crime-scene tape around Ayla's house, called two of the state's top homicide prosecutors to the site on Thursday and brought a state police support van to the scene.
‘That is the last place Ayla was seen,’ Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey said. ‘So as you might expect, we're going to give a lot of attention to that particular house.
(We’re) looking for any clues where she might be or where it would help us to locate her. We need to go through that as thoroughly as we can, just like we do in any other investigation.’
    [...]
He said officials from the state attorney general's office, including criminal division chief William Stokes, were at the house, but that was just to give them an opportunity to look at the site.

    Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey
‘We're at a point where we thought it was appropriate for him to come in and just do a walk-through,’ Chief Massey said. ‘We're just at a different point in the investigation.’
An attorney general spokesman said the visit to Ayla's father's home by Chief Stokes and Andrew Benson, another top homicide prosecutor, was ‘standard protocol’.
The police chief played down the significance of yellow tape strung about the perimeter of the small property, saying it was ‘just an additional barrier’ to secure the site.
He said people should not read too much into the presence of a state police incident command van parked there, saying it was for the convenience of technicians working at the site.

'I have no idea what happened to Ayla, or who is responsible,' he said. 'I will not make accusations or insinuations towards anyone until the police have been able to prove who's responsible for this.'
She also had a soft cast on her broken left arm. Ayla ended up with her father after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, Trista Reynolds, checked into a 10-day rehab programme.
The case drew expressions of community support and hope the child will be found safe as more than 60 people, many of them mothers, gathered at a local church on Wednesday for a candlelight vigil.
Chief Massey said police have made ‘significant progress’ although Ayla has not been found. ‘There are a lot of things that we've eliminated, and that's just as important as identifying things,’ he said.

Police are asking the media for privacy as they continue their search for missing toddler Ayla Reynolds.

Saturday marks the eighth day since 20-month old Ayla was last seen. The baby's father reported her missing from his home Saturday morning. He says he put her to bed, and she wasn't there the next day. Police activity has died down outside the home. Saturday, a single police car with no officer sat outside the home. Waterville Police, who have been working with State Police and the FBI on the case, released a statement to the media asking for privacy:

"Our team of investigators and searchers have spent the past week working in the glaring spotlight of national attention that has rightly focused on the tragic event which befell Ayla and her family on December 17th," the statement read. "Now, detectives need the opportunity to continue their work for a few days outside of the microscope."

The press release also thanks the area residents who have donated food, offered to help search for Ayla, and offered words of support and encouragement to public safety officials working on the case:

"The outpouring of support from not only the greater Waterville area, but from across the nation and around the world has served to buoy the spirits of searchers, detectives, and support personnel."

That outpouring of love and support from the community continues, as they hope for little ayla's safe return. April Taylor visited the Waterville home, where people have left cards, candles, and toys for Ayla.

"My daughter wanted to come and put a stuffed animal out for Ayla, to let her know that she's thinking of her and hoping she's warm and safe for this Christmas" Taylor said.

Police say they have received hundreds of leads on the case. They still encourage anyone with information on Ayla Reynold's disappearance to call 207-680-4700.

Whatever has happened, and no matter who had or didn't have custody, little Ayla did not have the best life, from what I have seen and read. At least not to my way of thinking things should be, and I'll say it... that's my opinion only.

I'm starting to think that people are doing some kind of copycat thing almost. Maybe they don't plan to hurt the child, but it happens, and they don't want to take the fall for it. Then all the "disappearing" baby stories are there, where the child is gone without a trace and not found for a long time, or NEVER found. To a desperate person, it might look like a perfect setup. You stay away from taking the polygraph as long as you can. Keep leading the cops and searchers on a wild goose chase, cry a lot and beg the "abductor" to bring your baby home or drop him or her off at a safe haven. You wait a few months and then wow, your baby's remains are found. Guess what? The body is so decomposed that they can't find a definitive cause of death. You go to trial with a money-grubbing fame whore attorney and get acquitted after a month-long trial. You go on and live the "Bella Vita."

Oh wait.... that's been done. Well, the "Bella Vita" remains to be seen but she's not sitting in prison for life or waiting for her turn in the death chamber.

A 20-month-old girl who vanished a week before Christmas after being put to bed in her father's home was taken away and didn't walk out on her own, investigators said Monday as they announced the largest reward ever offered in the state to help find a missing person.

It marked the first time since the search for Ayla Reynolds began that police have directly said they don't believe she left the house by herself.

"At this point in the investigation ... we are confident that Ayla did not walk out of the house by herself," Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey said at a news conference at which he announced a $30,000 reward was being offered for help finding her. "We believe that someone was involved in taking her out of the house, and that's where the focus of this investigation has turned."

The reward, gathered with donations from residents and businesses in the Waterville area, is the biggest ever offered in Maine for a missing person, state Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Massey said the developments in a mystery that's been featured on national television programs have not shifted the matter from a missing-person case to a criminal investigation. Despite the passing of the Christmas holiday with no sign of Ayla, police remain committed to finding her, the chief said.

"The intensity of the investigation is as high today as it was the first day," he said. "We continue to employ every single resource we have."

Massey was joined at the news conference by Waterville attorney John Nale, who appealed for the safe return of Ayla.

"I ask and I plead with the person or persons who have Ayla Reynolds that they please keep her safe and return her safely to us," Nale said.

Hundreds of police officers, game wardens and local residents have been searching for Ayla since she was reported missing by her father, Justin DiPietro, on the morning of Dec. 17. Massey said a report about the case on the Fox network television program "America's Most Wanted" during the weekend generated some leads, which are being checked by police.

The father of missing toddler Ayla Reynolds said Wednesday that he would never harm his daughter and implored whoever has the 20-month-old to bring her home safe.

In his second public statement in as many weeks, Justin DiPietro, 24, said he wanted to set the record straight on his daughter's disappearance.

"I have to believe that Ayla is with somebody and I just want that person to find the courage to do the right thing and find a way to return her safely," DiPietro said in a hand-written statement released Wednesday afternoon by the Waterville Police Department. "Even if that means dropping her off at a church or a hospital or some safe place."

The 20-month-old was last seen sleeping Friday night, Dec. 16, at her father's house at 29 Violette Ave. She was reported missing by DiPietro the next morning, some 10 to 12 hours later. She was wearing green polka-dot pajamas with a soft cast on her left arm.

A massive ground, air and water search was launched Dec. 17. Game wardens, state police, firefighters, civilian volunteers, the FBI and members of the Maine Association of Search and Rescue have participated.

Wednesday, DiPietro thanked everyone who has been involved in the search for his daughter, investigators and the community members who have offered a $30,000 reward for her return.

DiPietro said he has not agreed to media interviews because he does not want to hinder the investigation.

"It is important that the public hear it from me personally that I have no idea what happened to Ayla and that I am not hiding," he said.

Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey has said DiPietro and Ayla's mother, 23-year-old Trista Reynolds, of Portland, have been cooperating with the investigation.

DiPietro said questions raised in the national media about bruises on the child or how she broke her arm are "simply ludicrous."

"I would never want anyone to spend even a minute in my shoes," he said. "No one should ever have to experience this. It has affected me in more ways than anyone can imagine. Please don't give up or lose hope, because that is easy to do. Please be grateful for what you have. I know what I don't have."

Meanwhile, police on Wednesday said the investigation into the toddler's disappearance continued as it has for the last 12 days.

Massey said areas have been searched and searched again to make sure no piece of evidence is overlooked. He said Col. Joel Wilkinson of the Maine Warden Service will continue to make his personnel available as necessary to execute future searches.

"Our gratitude for their assistance is immense," Massey said in a prepared statement.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 370 tips had come in concerning the whereabouts of Ayla, police said. Such leads have come in from as far away as California.

"Although we fully understand and appreciate the public's desire to 'know what we know' about the case, we will continue to release only that information which is appropriate based on the direction of the investigation, and at a time when we are confident that such release will not compromise our progress," Massey said.

On Monday, investigators said they are confident that Ayla did not walk out of the house by herself. Someone else had to have been involved in taking her, Massey said.

Trista Reynolds, the girl's mother, had filed court paperwork in Portland for sole custody of the child on Thursday, Dec. 15. The state Department of Health and Human Services turned Ayla over to DiPietro in October.

Trista Reynolds' family members have said she was previously in rehabilitation for substance abuse.

Waterville Deputy Police Chief Charles Rumsey said Wednesday that police know where Trista Reynolds was the night of Dec. 16, when there were several people at the Violette Avenue home.

However, Rumsey declined to share that information. Rumsey also wouldn't say whether there was another child in the same room with Ayla that night -- as has been reported in the national media -- or if there was forensic evidence, such as blood, found inside the house.

Authorities are not making court affidavits filed in the case public, including those for permission to search the house, garage and two vehicles seized by police from the Violette Avenue driveway.

"We're very cautious in this case; we don't put investigative details out there that could compromise a portion of this investigation," Rumsey said. "That is our main concern. And when it comes to releasing those details to the press, we're going to err on the side of caution.

"We have talked to everyone that was in the house that night. We are confident that we know everyone who was in the house, as far as who stayed there and we talked to them all and we have talked to Trista Reynolds."

Rumsey said he also is confident that Waterville detectives, game wardens, search-and-rescue volunteers and the FBI have done the best job possible.

"We've done everything right," he said.

My feeling is that either the mom got in somehow and took her and is hiding her [or her body] somewhere. or the dad killed her.

I hope this case doesn't go cold like the Kansas City case. We know that baby is gone, somewhere, those parents are a real piece of work.

Grandfather: Missing Maine girl's dad not communicating with family
(CNN) -- The grandfather of a missing 20-month-old Maine girl repeated over and over Wednesday night that the girl's father has not been in touch with the family, even as the father reiterated he doesn't know what happened to her.
"Nothing, not a word, nothing," Ron Reynolds told HLN's Nancy Grace. "My daughter tried to talk to him. Nothing's coming back ... nothing is being said."
Police said Wednesday they have received 370 leads in the disappearance of Ayla Reynolds, who was last seen December 16 when her father, Justin Dipietro, said he put her to bed.
Earlier Wednesday, Dipietro said he doesn't know what happened to her.
"It is important the public hear it from me personally that I have no idea what happened to Ayla and that I am not hiding," Dipietro said in a statement.
The toddler's mother, Trista Reynolds, told NBC's "Today" this week that the girl's disappearance rests squarely on his shoulders.
"I trusted him to keep her safe and now she is missing," she said. "I don't know where she is and I blame him right now, because he did not protect her the way that he was supposed to."
Authorities in Waterville on Monday offered a $30,000 reward for information that would lead investigators to find the girl. Police are confident that someone took Ayla from the house, Police Chief Joseph Massey said.
Ayla is described as having blond hair, being about 2 feet, 9 inches tall, and weighing 30 pounds. She was last seen wearing green pajamas with white polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" across the front. When she disappeared, the girl had her arm in a soft cast.
Dipietro, 24, said he would never do anything to hurt Ayla, who was in his sole custody when she disappeared.
"The questions of Ayla's arm or bruises or anything else being said are simply ludicrous," Dipietro said in his statement. "I would never want anyone to spend even a minute in my shoes. No one should ever have to experience this."
Police searched Dipietro's home with his permission.
The day before the girl went missing, her 23-year-old mother filed a complaint seeking sole custody.
She told HLN she didn't tell Dipietro she was going to court because he was "vindictive" and "verbally abusive."
"Now, me and him had had the discussion within that week that he told me himself that he was going to file the custody papers against me," Reynolds said. "So I decided to go and file against him."

The mother told Grace that she had raised Ayla for 18 months and Dipietro became involved only after "I needed to go and get a little bit of help for myself." She told HLN she underwent rehab.

I think a lot of it is she reminds me of Lisa Irwin's MOTHER (sorry) @Whisper , making all the rounds on TV, portraying the whole I am so innocent bit, knowing that if she didn't have a drug problem chances are Justin wouldn't have had Ayla to begin with. I guess I just don't buy the whole "Oh poor me" act, I mean I do feel sorry for her because her daughter is missing but I don't know, you know what I mean?

She goes on to talk about how she trusted Justin with Ayla and he let something happen to her, if Justin didn't do anything wrong to Ayla than that is just shitty to say to someone whose child has just disappeared, then go on about how he won't talk to her, hell I wouldn't talk to her either after all the shit she talked about me, especially if I was innocent of harming the baby.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven. If the mother raised Ayla (alone, she says) until Ayla was 18 months old, and then the father came into the picture when the mother had to "go for a little help," (read: rehab), then it appears that the father doesn't have very much invested emotionally in the raising of Ayla. If he came to have her out of necessity, he might have seen her as an inconvenience, an interference with his drinking and/or drugging, and he might have resented her. Then again, he might have gone one with his drinking and/or drugging even after he was caring for her, and that's the reason she ended up with a broken arm (mom says he fell on her).

His saying that he does not know what happened to Ayla might well be true, to an extent. If he was wasted and something happened to her, even something so drastic that he would have to dispose of her body, he might have been so out of it that he really doesn't know what happened to her. It doesn't mean he didn't harm her. He was too wasted, or else he blocked it out b/c he was wasted and responsible for what happened to her. I think he does know something, and that's why he's refusing to speak to the mother and family. Someone would see past his story, as I think they already are slowly doing.

In my opinion, if he takes a lie detector test, he will fail the hell out of it. I know wishing doesn't do anything, but I really wish we could find out what happened to all the babies that have gone missing in the past year or so. I am enough of a realist to know that the chances are slim to none that they will come home alive and safe by now, but my god, those babies deserve to be brought home and given a proper burial or whatever, and the families that love them need some closure. It kills me to think of those little ones lying out there, alone and cold, or buried in the winter ground with snow covering. It makes me want to cry.

That was exactly my thought as well; I don't like the way either parent is handling this, and I'm getting VERY tired of the grandfather, as well. I just want to see that baby safe and alive; it still kills me to drive along Messalonskee Stream and not think how easy it would have been for someone to toss her in and let her float downriver, to who knows where... :(

The sprawling police command center at City Hall still hummed on Thursday as the search for missing toddler Ayla Reynolds entered its 13th day, but it was a quieter hum than last week.

    Maine Today Photo Store
At 29 Violette Ave., where the 20-month-old was last seen sleeping the night of Friday, Dec. 16, passersby slowed to glance at a growing shrine of stuffed animals and crime scene tape. But the police cars -- stationed outside as recently as Wednesday -- were now gone.

Police on Thursday confirmed that two vehicles seized from the driveway by police Dec. 19 have been returned to their owners. One is a Ford Explorer registered to 24-year-old Justin DiPietro, Ayla's father, and the other a Hyundai registered to a Portland woman whose name is not being made public.

Police declined to say what they were looking for in the vehicles.

A $30,000 reward offered on Monday for information leading authorities to the missing toddler remains unclaimed, police said. There have been no arrests and Ayla, who was last seen in polka dot pajamas and her left arm in a cast, has not been found.

Even as the search effort has been scaled back, Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey on Thursday repeated his frequent refrain that the incident is still a missing person case.

"There have been some searches this week, but they have dropped off in numbers and size and the number of folks searching," Massey said. "We have gotten to the point where any other searches will be based on information."

The Maine Warden Service, which had coordinated an estimated 100 public safety and volunteer search teams in woods and streams since Dec. 17, has returned to its regular duties and will be called upon only if needed. Waterville detectives and Maine State Police investigators were still busy Thursday following up on hundreds of tips on the girl's disappearance, but the primary search operation had ground to a halt.

Massey said there has been no lack of people volunteering to help in the search. He said some volunteers had to be turned away because each searcher had to be coordinated by the Warden Service to make sure all search areas were recorded and there was no duplication of effort or evidence contamination.

Police said DiPietro reported his daughter missing just before 9 a.m. Dec. 17, some 10 to 12 hours after she was put to bed. They said the toddler did not wander off on her own and she was taken from the home by someone, though police have stopped short of calling it a kidnapping.

Massey said from the first day of the search efforts on Saturday, Dec. 17, there were 15 Waterville police officers at the scene, 15 to 20 firefighters conducting a search, three state troopers, three game wardens and two tracking dogs. Media were not allowed to get close to the house.

By Monday, Dec. 19, there were 75 law enforcement officers on the ground, on the water and in the air looking for the toddler.

A dozen FBI agents from several locations arrived in Waterville to assist in the investigation, including door-to-door visits in the neighborhood. Authorities are not making court affidavits filed in the case public, including those for permission to search the house, garage and the two vehicles seized by police.

At its peak, the search area measured five miles in width -- north to south from the epicenter on Violette Avenue -- and 2 1/2 miles in depth, from Messalonskee Stream west past First Rangeway.

Waterville Police says there daily press release will be released later than usual today.

It's been two weeks since 20-month-old Ayla Reynolds disappeared from her Waterville home. So far there's been no sign of her.

At the house on Violette Avenue where Ayla was last seen the scene looks a bit different.

The State Police forensic team was back there again today and for the first time they appeared to have roped off part of the backyard near a shed.

Members of the State Police, wearing gloves and boots, were in and out of the house and at one point they removed a paper bag from the house. We're not sure what was in that bag or if it's significant at all.

Our Central Maine crew is working hard on this story and will continue to keep you updated on all new developments.

Waterville, Maine, police Chief Joseph Massey said Friday night that investigators believe foul play has occurred in connection with the disappearance of Ayla Reynolds.
Massey said detectives based that conclusion on evidence gathered during the past two weeks.
"This case has evolved from the search for a missing child to a criminal investigation," said Massey.
He said for this reason, he has asked Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit to take over the investigation into 20-month-old Ayla's disappearance.
Massey said Waterville police will work with state police and other agencies in helping solve what happened to Ayla.
"Every investigator involved in this case shares the hope of Ayla's family and the public that Ayla will be located soon," he said.
On Friday, a shed in the back yard of Justin DiPietro's home was roped off and investigators, wearing gloves and boots, were in and out of the house. At one point, they removed a paper bag from the house. It is unknown what was in the bag.
It was two weeks ago Saturday that Justin DiPietro reported his 20-month-old daughter missing. Since then, police, the FBI and volunteers have searched for the toddler.
Ayla's case was featured on the TV show "America's Most Wanted." Police have received more than 300 leads.

So, someone killed her and buried her out by the shed? Or was it like Caylee and dogs hit on a spot back there?

I was afraid from the beginning that this wasn't just a missing child case. She couldn't have gotten out of the house on her own. In my opinion, she was carried from the house, and she wasn't alive when that happened. Don't shoot me. It's just my opinion.

A day after police declared a 20-month-old girl's disappearance a crime, her grandfather pleaded Saturday for her return, urging anyone with information to come forward.

"We're all out here begging and pleading for the return of our baby girl, safe and sound. Call the state police," Ronald Reynolds, grandfather of Ayla Reynolds, said outside his home.

"What did they do to my little girl? What did they do to Ayla? What did they do to a helpless defenseless child?" asked Reynolds, who wore a green ribbon, the symbol for missing children. "Every day I get up and wait and wonder. Yesterday I kept looking out the window, waiting for someone to come by and tell me something."

Saturday marked two weeks since Ayla's father reported her missing from his home in Waterville, 75 miles north of Portland. Justin DiPietro told police he saw her the night before when he put her to bed. He said she was missing from her bed on the morning of Dec. 17.

A massive search began, with wardens and volunteers combing through the woods and neighborhoods and searching streams. Police and FBI agents went door to door.

A $30,000 reward, the largest in state history for a missing person case, has been offered for information leading authorities to the child.

On Friday, Massachusetts state police brought special equipment to DePietro's home, and crime scene technicians were seen taking measurements. Investigators concluded that a crime had taken place and the State Police Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey said. State police reported no new developments Saturday.

Of the 500 tips submitted to investigators, Waterville police say 75 have been from psychics. Deputy Waterville Police Chief Charles Rumsey told the Central Maine Morning Sentinel of Waterville (http://bit.ly/vA1qcq) that each tip, no matter who it's from, is assigned to an investigator.

Ayla was placed in her father's care while her mother, Trista Reynolds, was in a substance abuse rehabilitation program, which she completed. Ronald Reynolds said he was proud of his daughter for seeking help. "I know what my daughter did. She did the right thing," Reynolds said.

During Ayla's stay with her father, she broke her arm in what police described as an accident. The Reynolds family said they were concerned about Ayla's care, and they've also criticized DiPietro for not pleading publicly for his daughter's safe return.

DiPietro, who has issued a statement denying he had anything to do with her disappearance, couldn't be reached for comment Saturday.

Reynolds said the family is trying to maintain hope that Ayla is safe and will be found. He said he wakes up every morning and kisses a photo of Ayla, praying that she's OK.

Reynolds said he sometimes spends his day looking out the window, hoping someone will drop by with new information, something positive for the family to latch onto.

"Someone took her. Somebody took her out the home. Who is what's I'd like to know," he said.

"I beg of these people: Bring her home safe. Bring her home safe and sound."

Police investigating the disappearance of 20-month-old Ayla Reynolds have finished their investigative work involving the Violette Avenue home where she was seen last.

    RELATED HEADLINES
Missing child cases often difficult to investigate
According to Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, Maine State Police "released the house back to the occupants" late Saturday afternoon, but he declined to discuss what, if anything, investigators had found.

Since Dec. 22, yellow crime scene tape had been a fixture at the modest gray bungalow.

As of Saturday evening, however, the tape was gone. The white evidence tape that had sealed all windows and doors was also gone.

The investigation into Ayla Reynolds' disappearance continued into its second week Saturday, but it was the first day of investigation under new leadership.

A day earlier, Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey announced in a written statement that he had invited the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit to take the lead role in the case.

He added that the case had evolved from a missing-person case into a criminal investigation.

The Major Crimes Unit handles homicides, suspicious deaths and major investigations.

Earlier on Saturday, the agency issued its first statement on the case.

"There are no new developments," McCausland said in a written release.

McCausland added that investigators from the state and Waterville police were working on the case Saturday.

Early in the day, there was clear activity behind the yellow tape at the Violette Avenue home. A vehicle from the state police evidence response team was parked in the driveway, and several police vehicles were parked in the street.

By nightfall, the police cars were gone, the driveway was empty and the lights in the home were left on.

According to the city assessor's office, Phoebe DiPietro has owned 29 Violette Ave. since 1998. Her son, Justin DiPietro, reported Ayla missing on Dec. 17.

Is Phoebe the woman they refuse to name as the other person in the house and car at the house?

i mean, don't both parents seem sketchy? the mom had the rehab and was implying the dad was abusing the child. the dad stays out of the light for awhile and comes out today with a creepy demeanor in his interview. it's as weird as the Irwin family. How are they making these children disappear into thin air?

and they've also criticized DiPietro for not pleading publicly for his daughter's safe return.
Is there any evidence that doing that increases the odds of recovering a child if they were abducted? I've never read about a kidnapped child being returned because the kidnapper suddenly felt bad for the families.

“It would not be unusual for (police) to ask individuals involved in the case to not make statements,” he said during a phone interview Tuesday.

Drago said information about an ongoing investigation needs to be managed closely. Police need to balance the public’s need for information without creating false or misleading information in people’s minds, he said.

At the same time, police are aware that media silence on the part of people involved in the case can appear suspicious, he said.

“Preferably, if it’s really necessary for that person to speak, the officers can help them in terms of what to say and what not to say, and that type of thing,” he said.

Nonetheless, Drago said law enforcement’s advice is voluntary.

“Obviously, everybody has the right to speak to the media whenever they feel like it,” he said.

In missing children cases, police might offer to coach people before speaking to the media.

“If the parent really wants to (speak publicly), or if they think it’s a benefit to get out there and ask for the public’s help, law enforcement might try to coordinate with the family members,” he said.

Drago said there are also times when police actively encourage family members to speak to the press.

“If there’s something that might benefit the case, and police feel it’s good (information) to put out, they’ll try to manage that and work with that person to speak out,” he said. “We know it happens very often in missing children cases when the parents plead with whomever may have the child or so forth.”

Drago said it’s not unusual that police haven’t announced any new developments in the Ayla case since Saturday.

“They may not have anything to add,” he said. “Sometimes nothing happens for days, and sometimes law enforcement will feel compelled to say something because the media is putting a lot of pressure on them.

“It’s getting to the point where things going to get kind of slow and quiet, so there probably won’t be a lot of information to give out at this point.”

Still nothing. I think the are both suspicious but my finger still points at the father as the last known person to be with Ayla.

Ayla was last seen wearing this. Had me tear up looking at this, screams baby....she's a baby ffs. How are these two functioning?

I have to wonder if the mom didn't have some one snatch baby to make it out that dad did something to her? hmm.
Other thing is someone who know's mom or dad that decided they had to have Ayla.
I bet they both know some creepy types.
