Cookie-Money Thief Sentenced To 3 Days In Jail For Denny's Dash

    POSTED: 4:23 pm EDT June 6, 2008
    UPDATED: 4:45 pm EDT June 6, 2008

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Convicted Girl Scout cookie-money thief Stefanie Woods was sentenced Friday to three days in jail for skipping out on her Denny's restaurant bill without paying.

Palm Beach County Court Judge Barry Cohen said Friday that he had received several letters from the public asking him to harshly punish 18-year-old Woods after she helped a friend steal $168 from a 9-year-old Girl Scout selling cookies outside of a suburban Lake Worth supermarket.

Cohen told Woods that the letters did not influence him in his decision to sentence her to three days in jail for skipping out on her and a friend’s $25.84 Denny’s bill.

"The court does not believe Stefanie Woods is a monster or that her mother is irresponsible," he said Friday.

Woods had faced a maximum sentence of 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.

After her stay in jail, Woods will be sent back to juvenile detention, where she has been held since Juvenile Court Judge Moses Baker Jr. sent her there last Wednesday. Baker sentenced the 18 year old to up to three years in a high-security juvenile treatment facility to treat her substance abuse and mental health problems after she was convicted of petty theft and two counts of violating her probation for battery and criminal mischief.

Woods will remain in juvenile detention until a bed opens up in a state-run treatment facility, which may not happen until late September, her attorney Lewis Hanna told WPBF News 25.

Teens Unremorseful After Stealing From Girl Scout
    Police: Charges Could Be Pending

    POSTED: 12:09 pm EST February 1, 2008
    UPDATED: 5:19 pm EST February 5, 2008

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- The State Attorney's Office will decide whether to charge two teens who admit they robbed a 9-year-old Girl Scout selling cookies outside of a Lake Worth supermarket.

"I thought that it was a really mean thing to do, and I was sad after," Girl Scout Gracie Smith told WPBF News 25.

Authorities said that a 17-year-old girl in a hot-pink sweatshirt approached Smith outside of a Winn-Dixie supermarket at Hypoluxo and Jog roads in Lake Worth Wednesday evening and asked the girl what her favorite cookies were. Police told WPBF that, while Smith was telling the teen about her favorite Cinna-Spins, the teen snatched an envelope containing about $164 off of Smith's table, hopped into another teen's car and drove away.

Smith told WPBF that she turned to her mother in tears, saying, "Mommy! That girl took all my money!"

Authorities said they caught up with the 17-year-old girl Thursday and pulled her out of class at Park Vista High School, where she allegedly confessed to the crime, WPBF reported. Investigators said the girl's female accomplice, another a Park Vista student, also confessed.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said that the case has been handed over to the State Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed against the teens.

Smith's mother, Charlene Rubenstrunk, told WPBF that the girls returned to the store Thursday to taunt her daughter.

"They are within 10 feet of the same kid they just robbed last night and there is nothing anybody can do about it. I find that offensive," Rubenstrunk said.

The girls, whose names are not being released because they are minors, told WPBF that they were not remorseful for the crime, and that they did it because they "needed money."

"We went through all that effort to get it, we got all these charges and we had to give the money back. I'm kind of pissed," one of the girls told WPBF.

The other girl told WPBF that she was upset because police found them.

"I'm not sorry, I'm just pissed that I got caught," the girl said.

Money collected from the cookie sales were supposed to go toward Smith's sleep-over trip with Troop 664 to the Miami Seaquarium. Police were unable to recover the stolen money, but a father of one of the teens accused in the crime paid the money back to Smith's mother, WPBF reported.

Authorities said the teens were not charged because they did not use force to steal the money, nor did they take the money from the Girl Scout’s hands.

The State Attorney's Office will decide if the teens will be charged.

The Winn-Dixie supermarket is donating $200 to the troop, WPBF reported.

I remember when her and her friend stole the money from the little girl scout, the 9 year old was more mature than she was. I remember her laughing and saying that she wasn't sorry for doing it, only for getting caught, at the time I thought that she needed help.

I hope that she gets the rehabiliation that she needs!

I suppose their honesty is refreshing; but I cannot understand how they were unable to charge them with simply theft when they grabbed to money from the table.

Oh, and my parents told me that if I needed money for something I would have to work for it or save up my weekly allowance. They omitted to tell me that I could legitimately "put in the effort" to steal it. I hope her father makes her pay him back for the money he gave the girl scout; but I fear he won't.........

Bullshit. She is a fucking spoiled monster. What makes her think she can just take without earning while the rest of us work and earn what we have?

Obviously all her little run ins with the law have not taught her anything. The little bitch is probably used to her looks getting her out of most of the crap she pulls.

She's 18 now. Its time she was taught a lesson. Seriously, this stuff may be little petty things, but who has time for such bullshit? Taxpayer money going to correct shit her parents should have corrected a long time ago? Keerist, twats like this piss me off.

Imagine, stealing from a little kid. Yeah, you are a real bad ass! And then having the audacity to complain that they never got to keep the money??? Seriously, so if someone kidnaps a kid and gets caught, should they still get to keep the kid provided they face their charges??? What a numb cunt! Perhaps if someone explained to them how the legal system works, and apparently included right from wrong, too, maybe these stupid brats would fuck right off!

Holy shit. the fact that these bitches were just sitting there drinking Starbucks and stopped the interview to answer the cell phone is just CLASSIC.

And seriously, she split $168 with the other twat put $50 in her gas tank and still expected to have enough money left to buy a necklace and a new cell phone? Is she retarded?

Seriously, I hope someone knocks that bitch down a couple of notches in jail.

Look at the car that cunt is driving. Her parents have given her everything she has ever wanted and now she thinks she is entitled to whatever. I find it funny as hell that she needed money for gas for the car that was given to her (because, she is such a great kid and all). Do you think she pays for her insurance or for her cell phone usage? The idea of getting a job to pay for anything is way beyond her ken.

Stefanie Woods tried to do a D&D.

    Bitch update:

The getaway driver in a Girl Scout cookie money theft is on house arrest after an appeals court said authorities could not hold her in a juvenile detention facility while waiting for a bed to open in a drug rehabilitation center, WPEC CBS 12 reported Thursday.

Stefanie Woods, 18, was sentenced in May to three years in a high-security rehab facility to address substance abuse and mental-health problems after her conviction on charges she participated in stealing $168 from a 9-year-old Girl Scout in January. She was 17 at the time.

The rehab facility was full, and authorities placed her in juvenile detention.

Woods told a psychiatrist for a presentencing report that she began drinking at age 14 and used marijuana, cocaine, heroin, Xanax, Ecstasy, LSD and OxyContin.

The cookie cash theft happened in front of a west Lantana supermarket. "I mean who doesn't like money?" retorted Woods in front of CBS 12 cameras in February.

In May, Woods had her day in court. Girl Scout Gracie Smith testified in uniform. Juvenile court Judge Moses Baker found Woods guilty of taking part in the theft.

Concerned about Stefanie's history of extensive drug use, Judge Baker ordered Woods into treatment - a lock-down state program. Baker said he worried for her safety and had Stefanie taken into custody while she waited for space in treatment.

Stefanie's lawyer Lewis Hanna pointed out at the time, it could be months before there was opening in the drug program. Hanna said he worried for Woods well being at the juvenile center. Hanna ultimately challenged the detention. And now the Fourth District Court of Appeal court is siding with Stefanie.

She doesn't need juvenile detention! What she need is a real jail where they will screw her "cookies" Stealing it from a little kid...that's really low. I don't care if she's a pot head.....house arrest will not do anything for her.

'Cookie Monster' gets no prison time in robbery, kidnapping case
WEST PALM BEACH — — Stefanie Woods, aka the Cookie Monster, pleaded guilty on Thursday to two felonies punishable by life in prison: kidnapping and robbery with a firearm.

Then she got the break of her life: a sentence which won't require one day of just sitting in a prison cell.

Despite prosecutors asking for at least 15 years in prison and state sentencing guidelines calling for at least 12 years, Circuit Judge Amy Smith sentenced the 20-year-old to a year in jail which she has already served and ordered her into a Department of Corrections drug treatment bed.

Smith told Woods she has one chance to successfully complete drug treatment there, and after that must be on two years of house arrest, for a total of six years probation.

"A lot of people won't be happy about this," Smith said. "But I think it's the right thing to do, and it's my decision."

Woods pleaded guilty in her "best interest" — a legally distinct plea where a person acknowledges only a jury could convict of the crimes charged.

The robbery and kidnapping charges stem from an incident last year where Palm Beach Gardens police say Woods, along with her boyfriend and another man, armed with a gun, robbed a man of prescription drugs.

Prosecutor John Parnofiello, in asking for the 15-year sentence, argued that Woods was an organizer of the crime, and has a history of preying upon weaker, less-capable people.

She's still at it??? I remember the girl scout cookie incident but I didn't know about the armed robbery. The judge is a complete jerk. With her history and lack of accountability, she deserves 15 years. Letting her off that lightly is a death sentence. Her luck will run out when she meets some real hardened criminals that will have no problems sticking a gun to her face and blowing her head off. We will be reading about her again - her homicide.

    WOW

This absolute waste of space should put the entire legal system on her Christmas card list, seems like they certainly enjoy taking care of her.
Fantastic use of tax dollars, sending her to rehab again and again and again.
What motive does she have to stay clean?
"Ooooooooooh I might get caught and then rehab and house arrest"

Drop her in the middle of some jungle on the Nile with a stick, compass and a bottle of water. About 30 miles away from any sort of civilization. If she finds her way there, she'll be clean.

After about a half an hour of banter between a state prosecutor and a defense attorney, Circuit Judge Richard Oftedal this morning set a $10,000 bond for Stefanie Woods, the notorious Girl Scout cookie money thief who was arrested again earlier this month for violating her probation.

Wearing her hair braided and over her right shoulder, 22-year-old Woods was straight-faced for most of the hearing. But when the judge set bond, she looked to the back of the courtroom with a slight smile.

She then fanned her face with her hand and rolled up the sleeves of the grey sweatshirt under her jail uniform.
    [...]

To support his request for the low bond amount, Feuer asked Woods about her enrollment in school, her job, and regularly passing required drug tests.

Feuer began with asking Woods how she was this morning.

"Good. How are you?" she said with a smile.

She testified that she has a 3.57 GPA at Broward College and is taking algebra, psychology and developmental writing classes.
    [...]

One of the allegations is that Woods did not show up for a meeting with her probation officer and did not hand in a gas receipt.

When questioned by Feuer about that, Woods said she "of course" would have shown up for the meeting if she had a receipt to turn in. But she said she did not get a receipt for gas she purchased.

Papero called as a witness a law enforcement officer who was involved with Woods' 2009 arrest on charges of kidnapping and robbery.

"It's important that you get a flavor of what we're here for today," Papero told the judge.

The witness, a U.S. Marshal, began testifying to the 2009 incident when Feuer objected.

Papero responded that the judge needs to understand who Woods is and said, "This is the infamous cookie monster."

Woods remained straight-faced and Feuer objected.

Oftedal overruled the objection and the agent's testimony continued.

As of mid-morning, Woods had not posted bond.
    [...]

Woods was placed on house arrest and probation in 2010 after she pleaded guilty to kidnapping and robbery charges. The terms of her probation require her to stay in her Parkland house except when she is working or engaging in another activity approved by her probation officer.

Woods, previously of suburban Lake Worth, was arrested for not complying with the terms of her probation. On two occasions, she was absent from her home for short periods without getting approval. She also failed to report to the probation office on March 7, according to an arrest warrant signed March 15 by Oftedal.

'Cookie Monster' to spend 15 days in jail for violating probation
WEST PALM BEACH — As punishment for violating her probation earlier this year, the 22-year-old "Cookie Monster" will spend 15 days in jail and will have to participate in more community service.

Stefanie Woods, who now lives in Parkland with her parents, was charged by Broward County Sheriff's deputies on April 5 with violating probation for a 2009 armed robbery and kidnapping.

Her probation officer said she failed to submit a gasoline receipt as required, wasn't where she was supposed to be for short periods and didn't show up for a probation meeting earlier this year, according to an arrest warrant.

Woods pleaded guilty in her "best interest" Thursday to one count of violating her probation. The other three counts were dropped, her attorney Leonard Feuer said Friday.

Circuit Judge Richard Oftedal sentenced her to 15 days in jail that Woods will serve over weekends. She also must perform an additional 50 hours of community service.

She must continue abiding by the terms of her probation, Feuer said.
