Anthony Sewejkis Arrested For Smashing 4mo Hunters Skull Into Floor

I just saw this puke on the news crying,Im sure that baby cried having his head smashed

    Anthony Lawrence Sewejkis
    CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -
A Canton father of a 4-month-old boy has been charged with first-degree child abuse on accusations he fractured his son's skull.
Anthony Lawrence Sewejkis, 25, broke down in tears as he was arraigned Friday. Police said he was arrested Wednesday after hospital staff contacted them with suspicions of abuse to the baby.
Police said Sewejkis is accused of pushing the baby's head into the floor at an apartment on Michigan Avenue.
The baby, whose name is Hunter, is in critical condition at University of Michigan hospital.
The baby's mother, Leanne Garlick, said Sewejkis had originally told her the baby had fallen off the couch while she was at work.
"I feel completely blind-sided from it all to be honest. I mean, this is not something that I ever, in my wildest dreams, expect that this is something he would have done," Garlick said.
Garlick said her son has undergone several surgeries to alleviate pressure on his brain.

Abused child clings to life as father faces trial
Even if 5-month-old Hunter Sewejkis of Canton survives severe head injuries blamed on his father — a scenario that remains in doubt — his doctor testified in heart-wrenching detail Thursday what his life will be like.

He likely would never walk, sit up or eat on his own. He probably would be blind and possibly deaf.

“Hunter’s injuries are devastating, and I think it is still possible that Hunter could succumb to his injuries,” Lisa Markman, a University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital doctor, said.

Hunter, whose head was allegedly slammed twice against a carpet-covered hardwood floor of his parents’ Michigan Avenue home on Dec. 7, already has defied earlier expectations, prompting his maternal grandfather, Sal Alongi, to call him “our little miracle baby.”

Yet Markman, testifying by a speaker phone during defendant Anthony Lawrence Sewejkis’ preliminary hearing in 35th District Court, said Hunter has suffered severe brain damage, narrowly surviving because his brain stem continues to “tell his body to breathe.”

“His quality of life, if he lives, will be extremely poor,” Markman said.

Testimony by Markman, Hunter’s mother, Leanne Garlick, and Canton Police Detective Tim Wright convinced 35th District Judge Ronald Lowe to order Sewejkis, 25, to stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court for first-degree child abuse. If convicted, Sewejkis faces up to 15 years in prison.

Lora Weingarden, lead attorney for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, has said she will seek higher charges against Sewejkis if Hunter dies. Sewejkis remains jailed with a $500,000 cash bond.

Alongi, other relatives and family friends wore T-shirts to court showing images of Hunter. The front asked for prayers for a smiling Hunter, and the back showed the baby lying in his hospital bed, tubes feeding his body, with a caption that read, “My Father’s Abuse.”

Lowe asked the family and supporters to remove the T-shirts after defense attorney Kristin Pell said the clothing, worn amid a highly publicized case, could jeopardize Sewejkis’ right to fair court proceedings by violating his due process.

Outside the courthouse, family and friends also carried signs calling for an end to child abuse. They hope Hunter’s situation can draw attention to what they called an escalating problem.

“Nobody should have to go through this,” family friend Beverly Decker said.

Alongi said the family remains hopeful that Hunter could surprise doctors by slowly recovering, though he has conceded the outlook is grim.

“We went from thinking we would have to plan a funeral to thinking there’s a chance Hunter could survive this,” Alongi said.

Hunter’s mother was the first witness inside the courtroom as Sewejkis hearing began. Garlick, who works for a limousine service, said her baby was fine when she stopped home for an afternoon lunch on Dec. 7, but she began receiving texts and phone calls from Sewejkis around 6 p.m.

Garlick said Sewejkis initially claimed Hunter had fallen off the couch and had a “small bump” on his head. When Garlick came home, however, she said Hunter’s face “looked uneven, slanted.”

Accompanied by Sewejkis, she took Hunter to Oakwood Annapolis Hospital, which contacted Canton police after suspecting child abuse. Garlick said Sewejkis appeared “somber and calm” on the way to the hospital.

Detective Wright spoke with Sewejkis at the hospital, saying the father initially told him Hunter had fallen off the couch. He said Sewejkis talked of the stresses of being a parent.

“He became emotional” and talked of losing sleep and not getting enough parenting help from Garlick “because she was working so much,” Wright testified.

Finally, Sewejkis admitted he picked up the crying baby with both hands and struck the back of his head against the floor, Wright said, quoting Sewejkis as saying, “I freaked. I f***ed up. I hurt the child.”

Alongi, sitting in the courtroom, was asked by Judge Lowe to leave after he reacted aloud to the testimony of how Hunter was hurt. Alongi later said he couldn’t control his emotions when he heard how brutally his grandson had been treated.

Wright testified that Sewejkis gave a reason why he initially claimed the child had fallen off the couch.

“He said he was afraid to tell the truth about what happened because he would lose everything,” Wright said.

By everything, Sewejkis told Wright he meant Hunter, the baby’s mother and a 6-year-old child she had from a previous relationship — a child that often visited the Michigan Avenue home.

Meanwhile, Alongi said the family is asking for prayers for Hunter. Also, anyone who wants to make donations for Hunter’s expenses — those not covered by insurance — may send checks to Hunter Sewejkis at Alongi’s business address, 12107 Merriman Road, Livonia, MI, 48150.

Alongi said donors who send $40 or more will be sent a T-shirt with Hunter’s picture. Those donors who want the shirts should include a size along with their name and address.

A trust fund also has been set up to allow donations to be made through TCF bank branches.

Canton baby Hunter Sewejkis, who spent 11 weeks in a hospital following charges his father abused him by slamming his head against a floor, has been released to stay at the home of his maternal grandfather, Sal Alongi.
    [...]

Hunter, referred to by Alongi as “our little miracle baby” for defying earlier expectations he wouldn't survive, was released Feb. 21 from the University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Alongi, his wife Theresa Alongi and his stepdaughter, Stephanie Babbitt, have cared for Hunter using equipment such as feeding tubes the hospital sent home with them. Hunter's mother, Leanne Garlick, also has made visits to her child.

Alongi and his wife live in Belleville.

“Right now, Hunter is in our custody,” Alongi said, adding that Hunter continues to slowly improve despite occasional setbacks.

“He's definitely happier (after leaving the hospital),” Alongi said. “He's starting to smile quite often now and make some of the normal baby sounds that most babies make.”
    [...]

Alongi said Hunter now weighs just over 19 pounds. Garlick, who came home from work to find her baby injured, has said in court that Hunter's head looked “uneven, slanted.”

Alongi said Hunter has improved, though his long-term prognosis isn't known. The family is hopeful the baby will rebound from brain damage cited by doctors.

“His head is starting to take the shape of a normal baby, except for the back of his head,” Alongi said. “He is gaining strength each day.”

Alongi's wife has taken a leave of absence from her job, and the family has taken shifts caring for little Hunter.

“It's very hard, to be honest,” Alongi said. “He requires a lot of constant attention.”

Anyone who wants to make donations for Hunter's expenses, including those not covered by insurance, may give to a trust fund set up through TCF bank branches.

So much remains unknown. To what extent will Hunter recover? What will be his father's fate?

Yet one aspect of Hunter's life is known, Alongi said: “He's a little fighter.”

This is truly wonderful news. So few of these little victims survive. And, at 17 pounds, Hunter's doing well. He can smile, too. I'm so hopeful he'll have some semblance of a normal life. I pray he will.

Infant in Child Abuse Case Improves, Rummage Sale Fundraiser Planned

In the days following Dec. 7, 2011, family members of Hunter Sewejkis, then just four months old, began planning a funeral as they prepared to disconnect the infant from life support after Hunter was critically injured in a case of suspected child abuse.

Hunter’s father, 25-year-old Anthony Sewejkis, faces trial in Wayne County Circuit Court beginning May 8 on charges of first-degree child abuse after being accused of twice slamming the infant’s head into the floor of the family’s Michigan Avenue home in Canton. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Hunter, meanwhile, continues to surprise doctors and family, making strides toward a partial recovery, but still suffers from the effects of his severe head trauma and requires the use of a feeding tube and anti-seizure medication.

“He is doing a lot better,” said Melissa Pangle of Saline, Hunter’s cousin. “But he only has 30 percent vision in one eye and is still blind in the other one.”

Hunter has undergone an extensive rehabilitation routine to assist his development while defying the grim prognosis given after his injury.

“He’s actually responding,” Pangle said. “He learned how to smile, learned how to recognize voices. He’s pretty good hearing, considering what happened to him.”

For a family that had feared the worst six months before, Hunter’s signs of improvement have been encouraging.

“He’s definitely more responsive than anyone thought he would ever be,” Pangle said.

Pangle said doctors and the family were prepared to lose Hunter in December, even removing his ventilator at the hospital.

“They took him off all the machines, took him off the ventilators and (the doctors said to) expect him to go in 90 minutes,” she said. “He kept going. Then they said 24 hours and he kept going, then they said they saw instances where (similar victims have) gone a week, and he kept going.”

    Long road to recovery remains

Still, Pangle said, Hunter faces a long road ahead, as he lost much of his brain function, and nobody is able to even project how long he will be able to live in his condition.

“Doctors won’t give any prognosis because they’ve never seen a baby do what he’s doing,” Pangle said. She said Hunter never would be capable of living independently.

Pangle said Hunter currently is in the process of being adopted by his maternal grandparents.

Hunter’s mother, Leann Garlick, recently lost custody of the child, Pangle said, and Hunter remains a ward of the state until his adoption is finalized.

What a beautiful little boy, and still looking pretty damn good after his ordeal. His maternal grandparents are going to adopt him? It must be awful knowing their own daughter is such a failure. I'm glad they are there for Hunter and I pray he will continue his remarkable recovery.

Tundra, is there more information about why Mom lost custody? All that I read said she was working alot... she may have had to because the dadmonster wasn't....

Either way, so glad Little Man is recovering. He is a beauty, his little smile and those eyes just make my heart melt.

I hope that POS gets a good long prison term, has to share a cell with "Bubba" and doesn't get the comfort of soap on a rope!

I looked around but could not find anything. It probably happened in family court, so is not covered by the press.

Then you don't really know if she is a failure or not, do you? She may just work so much that it is better for a special needs child to be cared for by her parents.

    CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -
A jury has convicted a Canton Township father of first-degree child abuse for brutally assaulting his then 4-month-old son in December.

Anthony Lawrence Sewejkis was arrested after hospital staff contacted police them with suspicions of abuse to the baby.

Police said Sewejkis had been accused of pushing the baby's head into the floor at an apartment.
The baby, whose name is Hunter, spent weeks in critical condition at University of Michigan hospital.

During an interview with Local 4, the baby's mother, Leanne Garlick, said Sewejkis had originally told her the baby had fallen off the couch while she was at work.

"I feel completely blind-sided from it all to be honest. I mean, this is not something that I ever, in my wildest dreams, expect that this is something he would have done," Garlick said

We fly with all prevailing winds of change,
For any quirk of fate we may arrange.
    We are not "meek" or "mild";
Don't turn your back when twilight dims the sky -
We'll haunt the perpetrators till they Die
"Rescuing one animal may not change the world, but for that animal their world is changed forever!" - Unknown

And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
    James 5:15

We say this every Sunday in church after the list of sick and shut in has been read. I never gave it much thought til now and I realize how true it is. This baby was damn near dead at the hands of this monster but becoz his family believed and never gave up hope his prognosis is much better.
More than likely the mom's family has custody becoz it's fucking hard to take care of a special needs child and work and she cant afford a nurse or in home care so it was more reasonable for her parents to take over his care.
She didn't fail. It was this fat sack of shit who failed.
That baby is beautiful and his smile is one that could light up a room. I hope nothing but sunshine and roses and butterfly and puppy dog kisses. I pray that his mothers heart heals and that (I know this will sound absurd) she harbors no hate towards her sons sperm donor. It will only make her sick and unable to forgive herself for what HE did.

Razors pain you, rivers are damp, acid stains you, drugs cause cramps, gun aren't lawful, nooses give, gas smells awful, you might as well live.

Wanna get laid? Crawl up a chicken’s ass and wait!

The stars are always there but we miss them in the dirt and clouds. We miss them in the storms. Tell them to remember hope. We have hope."

Sobbing and claiming remorse for brutally abusing his then-4-month-old son, Canton father Anthony Sewejkis failed to sway a judge Friday from imposing the maximum prison sentence of 10-15 years for injuries that damaged baby Hunter’s brain and left him partially blind, deaf, paralyzed and unable to eat on his own — and still facing possible death.

Sewejkis, dressed in a yellow jail uniform, faced sentencing by Wayne County Circuit Judge Margaret Van Houten after a jury convicted him May 11 of first-degree child abuse for injuring Hunter while home alone with him last December.

The child’s mother, Leanne Garlick, and others have said Sewejkis, 25, had showed no real emotion before his sentencing.

“To say that I have no remorse is not true,” Sewejkis told the judge. “Every day of my life since Dec. 7 has been hell, not knowing whether or not my son is going to live or die. I carry his picture with me everywhere I go.

“This is not a show. This is real. I loved my son,” Sewejkis said, adding that he tried to care for Hunter as a stay-at-home father while Garlick worked. “I do not blame anybody but myself for what happened. I no longer wish to live.”

Sewejkis’ sentencing culminated a heart-wrenching case that strained family relations after Garlick lost custody of Hunter to maternal grandparents Sal and Theresa Alongi, though Garlick and her father wept and hugged after Friday’s sentencing.

Van Houten, in ordering Sewejkis imprisoned 10-15 years, accepted Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Lora Weingarden’s request to go beyond the three-to-five year recommendation contained in a presentencing report. Van Houten said Sewejkis never sought help for Hunter for hours until Garlick came home, though he ultimately confessed he struck the child’s head against a carpet-covered hardwood floor of their home on Michigan Avenue.

“He was trying to cover it up,” Van Houten said. “He was trying not to let the authorities know what he did.”
    [...]

Heather Babbitt, Hunter’s aunt, recalled how Hunter looked at the University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital, where he was airlifted from Oakwood Annapolis Hospital in Wayne. Babbitt said Hunter’s eyes bulged and his tongue was swollen outside of his mouth.

Since Hunter’s three-month hospital stay, Babbitt said, family members have pulled together to care for him, partly by using a feeding tube attached to his stomach. She said he smiles on one side of his face and his eyes aren’t focused as they should be.

Sal Alongi, who has called Hunter “our little miracle baby,” said the incident has forever changed the child and Alongi’s family.

“He will never walk. He will never talk,” Alongi told the judge. “He is blind in one eye and partially blind in the other. He is deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. He will never crawl. He will never be able to do anything that any normal baby or child can ever do.”
