Man, Mother of Missing Toddler Found in Woods Arrested

PIERSON, Fla. – The mother of a 1-year-old girl found in a wooded area in Volusia County and the man who reported her missing have been arrested in the child's disappearance.
A sheriff's office spokesman says 23-year-old Carlos Rivera and 30-year-old Leah Wiley were arrested Saturday. Charges were not immediately released.
Deputies, a helicopter and bloodhounds had searched for Lupita Gonzalez for hours. A missing child alert was also issued.
Authorities say Gonzalez, Rivera and Wiley were at a party Thursday where "illegal drugs were being consumed." Rivera walked away from the house where the party was being held with the child for unknown reasons. He left the girl in a field where she was later found.

Lupita Gonzalez was found at 3:20 p.m. under a bush in a field in northwest Volusia County, deputies said. The girl appeared to be fine, but she is being checked at a hospital as a precaution.
Carlos Rivera, 23, called 911 about 4:45 a.m. to report that he saw Lupita Gonzalez at a party on Lawrence Street in Seville on Thursday, deputies said.
Rivera then told investigators the approximate location of where he had left her on Friday, they said. He had met the girl and her mother for the first time at the party, where drugs had been ingested, deputies said.
Lupita's mother, Leah Wiley, 30, and Rivera were arrested. The charges were not immediately disclosed.
Deputies on foot and in a sheriff's helicopter searched for the girl for nearly 12 hours before they found her.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office found Lupita Gonzalez at 3:20 p.m. Saturday under a bush in a field in Seville. Deputies originally called her disappearance suspicious after Carlos Rivera reported her missing Saturday at 4:42 a.m.

Deputies said Rivera and Gonzalez's mother Leah Wiley, 30, went to a party with the child Thursday night.

According to a release, Rivera told police he paid Wiley to have sex with him, but became upset when they were interrupted.

Rivera then left the party with Wiley's daughter at 7 a.m. Friday.
Investigators said Rivera abandoned the girl in a field before catching a ride back to Putnam County.

Rivera is charged with kidnapping and child abuse. He also has three open warrants for failure to appear in court on charges of grand theft, DUI and driving without a valid license.

Wiley is charged with child neglect for failing to report her daughter missing. She told police that she suspected that Rivera took her daughter, but didn't want to report her as missing because then the child's father would find out she had sex with Rivera.

DCF has taken custody of the child and Wiley's two other children.

The child had been missing about 32 hours. This case was “about as bizarre as it gets,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gary Davidson.

“It is hard not to think about what this child must have been through out in a field on her own in the elements,” Davidson said. “The temperature got a bit cool that evening, and it breaks your heart to think what that child must have gone through.”

Rivera was at a Thursday night party at a home on Lawrence Street in Seville, and so was Wiley and her child. Rivera is accused of paying Wiley to have sex with him, but got mad when she was called to another room before they were done. He grabbed her daughter and left at 7 a.m. Friday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The two walked along U.S. 17 until Rivera got worried that he might get in trouble, so he abandoned the girl in a field and hitched a ride to Putnam County, the Sheriff’s Office said. Just before 5 a.m. Saturday, he called the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office to report the girl missing.

At first Rivera was vague and confused, Davidson said.

“He said he had left the party with the child and was impaired and blacked out and couldn’t remember where he left the child,” the sheriff’s spokesman said.

Bloodhounds and a helicopter helped ground units in the search, but the child wasn’t found until Rivera drew a map and searchers focused on an area about two miles away from Lawrence Street. Davidson said it was relieving to find her in such good condition. She was hospitalized with dehydration and insect bites.
