April Blasini Thomas Bennet
A mother and her daughter have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder for hire after police responded to their Manassas home and found the woman's husband struggling with his would-be killer in the backyard, authorities said today.
April Blasini, 35, and her 17-year-old daughter, who was not identified because she is a minor, were arrested on Wednesday. They were also charged with aggravated malicious wounding. Manassas City police said the two arranged to have their husband and father killed on May 23.
On that night, at about 1 a.m., the 36-year-old man was awoken by his daughter who said she heard noises coming from the backyard, police said. When he walked outside and looked into an open shed, 19-year-old Thomas Bennett approached him from behind and hit him several times in the head with a baseball bat, police said.
When officers arrived, responding to what they thought was a burglary in progress, they found the two men struggling in the backyard, police spokesman Sgt. Tim Neumann said. Bennett, of the 9700 block of Clark Place in Manassas, was charged with malicious wounding that night.
Through further investigation, Neumann said it was discovered that Bennett was seeing the 17-year-old and had been hired by her and her mother to commit to murder the victim that evening. He will face an additional charge of attempted murder, authorities said.
Blasini is being held without bond in the Prince William jail and is scheduled to appear in court July 22. Her daughter is being held without bond in the Prince William Juvenile Detention Center.
"It was pretty devastating to the husband and father once he found out what really happened," Neumann said.
