NEWPORT NEWS - A man accused of beating up his girlfriend threw their 10-month-old daughter at a pursuing officer in a desperate attempt to escape arrest, police said.
The infant was not seriously injured in the incident, but Marquis Lee's actions in a Newport News apartment complex early Thursday morning landed him behind bars facing child abuse and assault charges.
According to the police report, Lee's girlfriend approached a police officer around 1:30 a.m. on a street near her apartment in the Dresden Drive area and reported that she had been assaulted by Lee.
The officer noted "discolorations on her face and neck."
Moments later, the officer saw Lee walking past, carrying the couple's 10-month-old daughter.
When the officer tried to arrest him, Lee tossed the child at him and tried to run away.
The 26-year-old was being held at the Newport News City Jail.
When police checked the apartment on Dresden Drive, officers found the couple's 3-year-old son, who had been left alone by his father.
Lee has been charged with assault and battery, resisting arrest, child abuse and neglect, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
