CHARLESTON -- A Cross Lanes woman has been charged in the death of her two year-old son.

Thursday Afternoon Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Elizabeth Thornton. Just after 6:30 p.m. she was arraigned in Kanawha county magistrate's office.

Thornton, 21, is charged with child neglect resulting in death. According to authorities, the 22-month-old boy suffered brain trauma.

Constantine "Alex" Washburn died this week in a Charleston Hospital. According to the criminal complaint, Thornton claims her son bumped his head on a table and fell against the toilet, but police say that's not consistant with the child's injuries.

"Doctors have told us that the type of injuries that he had required immediate medical attention when they occurred and from the stories we have so far that medical attention was not achieved or not taken care of at that point," said Lt. Sean Crosier, of the Kanawha County Police Department.

Doctors believe if Alex received immediate medical care, his life may have been saved.

Police say Alex's father, 31 year-old Christopher Washburn was also present during the incident, but has not been charged at this time.

Child Protective Services have been involved prior to this incident and Thornton's three other children are now in their custody.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A young mother from Cross Lanes faces charges in the death of her two year old son.

Kanawha County Sheriff's Deputies charged Elizabeth Thornton with child neglect resulting in death. Thornton is 21 years old.

Police say her 22-month-old son, Constantine Alexander Washburn, suffered brain trauma because Thornton failed to get him medical attention. Doctors say had Alex received immediate medical help, he may have been saved. Police say Alex wasn't taken to the hospital until three days after his injuries after a friend came over to the family's apartment in Cross Lanes and found Alex lying unresponsive on the floor. The toddler died in the hospital earlier this week.

Investigators say Alex had bruises under his neck and chin and hemmoraging of his brain. Police say that Elizabeth told them Alex fell and bumped his head on the coffee table, then hit his chin on the toilet later that night.

Alex's father, Christopher Washburn, lives with the family. Authorities say Mr. Washburn was aware of Alex's injuries, but has not been charged.

At the arraignment, Elizabeth said she had did not have any other children living with her anymore. WSAZ.com learned she has three other children that have been taken into child protective services.

Elizabeth Thornton was set at $100,000.

The procession will leave the funeral home at 11:00 a.m.

Couple questions... Why the fuck isn't the father being charged if he knew about the injuries and didn't get the baby medical attention?? Surely those charges are just pending, right?

Second, in the article it says that her other children had already been taken away. If that's true then why the hell was that child still with her? unfreakinbelievable!

LOL! My mother said I over reacted when I called the Pediatric clinic for Nadezdha falling off a 3 1/2 foot bed! Maybe I did... but if I hadn't and something really had been wrong... then you'd all be seeing my name up here right? Better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

Till now, I thought kids bounced till they were around 5yrs. At least my other two did.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston couple appeared in court to face charges of child neglect involving the death of their young son in May.

Elizabeth Thornton, 21, and Christopher Washburn, 31, are both charged with child neglect resulting in the death of their 22-month old son, Alex. A friend who saw the boy unconscious on the floor of their apartment alerted authorities. He died three days later.

Both Thornton and Washburn pleaded not guilty to those charges Tuesday and are set to go on trial Jan. 5 before Kanawha Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman.

According to a report from the state Medical Examiner, the child suffered traumatic head injuries but his death could have been prevented if he had been taken to the hospital sooner. He concluded the death was a homicide.

The parents told police the boy had been ill and bumped his head on a table and on a toilet. But doctors said his injuries weren't consistent with that explanation and the autopsy pointed to an abusive head injury.

She has been incarcerated in lieu of $100,000 bond since she was arrested several days after the child's death. Washburn's bond was also set at $100,000 on Tuesday and he was taken to South Central Regional jail following his hearing.

The mother has three other children.

The father should be charged. He was present when this occured and also failed to get his son the medical attention he needed.

At least the "System" worked for the other three innocents in this family....why didn't it work for little Alex?
