Freak Cemetery Accident Leaves 2yo Fighting For Life

A trip to a local cemetery to pay tribute to family turned into a painful nightmare for a family from Milton.

Lydia Peyton, who'll be 2 years old next month, was crushed when a family member's tombstone toppled. Her mother, Brooke Moore, says Lydia's brother stumbled. When he did, the tombstone came down and pinned Lydia underneath. It happened at a cemetery in eastern Cabell County.

Lydia's in Children's Hospital in Columbus with kidney, liver and spinal damage.

Prayers for Lydia Peyton's FULL recovery!

We were taking a picture of Conrad and Lydia at their Great Grandparents grave site since they were both named after them. Conrad was holding Lydia on the top and he was behind her. She hoped down after the picture was taken and was standing in front of the tomb stone and Conrad lost his balance and fell on the tombstone and it knocked her down and they both landed on her. She underwent surgery at Cabell-Huntington. That surgery the stopped her adominal bleeding, stopped her liver from bleeding, she has no use of her left kidney. She was flown to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. They are waiting on the kidney to die and may have to take it out at some point. Her biggest concern at this point is the 6mm movement in her L1 and L2. At this time she is paralized from the waist down and may never be able to walk.

While I hope the little one recovers quickly, I do have to ask this is it normal for tombstone to not be connected and loose?
If we can speak ill of the living, why not the dead?

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, what does presence make?

If the tombstone was loose enough for a kid to be able to stumble and send it toppling, that's not normal.

In some older graveyards that are sort of neglected, there are lots of broken stones, due to age or vandalism. What a horrible thing to have happen. I know her brother is feeling terrible knowing that it was his push that sent it over on her, whether accidental or not.

A full recovery, Lydia is my wish for you.

Lydia Peyton has cast taken off, to begin physical therapy
    Updated: Dec 30, 2011 7:22 PM AST
By David Iversen, Reporter - email

The family of Lydia Peyton has something to be thankful for this holiday season.

The two-year-old, who was crushed by a 500 pound tombstone, was taken out of her full-body cast on Friday afternoon, and will begin physical therapy.

"She's acting like a typical two year old, for the first time in over a month," said Lydia's mother Brooke Vance. . . .

"It's not going to hinder her opening her gifts. . . . " said Vance.

Peyton remains paralyzed from the waist down.
