Amber Alert 11Yo William McQuain / Mother Found Dead *found deceased*

Montgomery County police are investigating the murder of a Germantown woman and the disappearance of her young son.

Officers found 51-year-old Jane McQuain dead in her bedroom at the Seneca Knolls Condos in the 1300 block of Briarcliff Terrace about 8:25 p.m. Wednesday night. Investigators say there was trauma to her body.

Earlier that day, a friend of McQuain had reported her missing, police say.

McQuain’s 11-year-old son, William, is missing. Authorities say he was last seen at the home on September 30. Police believe he was abducted.

William is described as a light skin black male, approximately 5' tall and weighs about 85 pounds.

Police say McQuain’s car is also missing and that her son could be with it.. The vehicle is described as a 2011 black Honda CRV with Maryland tags 5AG9405.

Police in Charlotte, N.C. said that an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a Germantown woman and the disappearance of her young son

There is no word yet, however, on the whereabouts of the missing boy, 11-year-old William McQuain.

The suspect, who sources say is the boy's father, was arrested on a Maryland warrant for murder.

Maybe it is poor picture quality, but that boy's picture makes him look like he has scars on his face. There is unevenness around the line of his cheek and jaw, and seemingly light patches on his skin. Nonetheless, he's a handsome little dude. But I'm really hoping it's just not a high def picture.

    Oh man.... where is he?

I hope he's found and he's ok. Poor kid has lost his mom, and who knows what trauma he's been exposed to besides that.

    Still missing

Ronald McCombs, McQuain's ex-boyfriend, said that he knew Lopez was responsible when he heard the news of McQuain's death early today.

"We talked two weeks ago and Jane said she was scared for her life, that he was threatening to kill her, he wanted to move back with her," McCombs said. "She didn't want him. He doesn't work, he hasn't had a job since he left prison three or four or five years ago and she didn't want anyone right now. Just wanted to focus on raising William."

McCombs said Lopez had been in prison for stabbing a man multiple times and putting him in a trunk, and had been in jail for twenty-some years. Lopez and McQuain had been married before Lopez went to prison, McCombs said.

Jane McQuain and her 11-year-old son, William, left their Germantown apartment Oct. 1, heading out, as usual, for Saturday sports and other activities in her new Honda CR-V.

The car eventually returned to the apartment building’s parking lot, but neither McQuain nor her son — an inseparable pair — was seen again.

In the days that followed, a tall, slender man in a hat began walking to and from Apartment 13100, police and neighbors said. He spoke softly, often had a cellphone to his ear and once was seen dragging a large television box to McQuain’s Honda, neighbors said. He told one resident that he was returning the TV to the store, then put the box in the back of the SUV and drove off. That was on Oct. 5.

It wasn’t until Wednesday, exactly a week later, that Montgomery County authorities found McQuain’s body in her bedroom. She had suffered some type of undisclosed physical trauma. There still is no sign of William, who by now has missed eight days of his sixth-grade classes.

Police found McQuain’s Honda near Charlotte on Thursday morning and have charged McQuain’s estranged husband — the man allegedly seen carrying things to and from her apartment — in her killing, authorities said. The husband, Curtis Maurice Lopez, 45, was convicted in 1987 in a stabbing and served more than a decade in Pennsylvania prisons. He is not William’s father, authorities said.
    [...]

Police said there is nothing to indicate that William was harmed, but detectives are looking for the boy and have no sense of where he might be.

“We have no physical evidence of this kid,” said Montgomery Police Chief J. Thomas Manger. “What gives us the most concern is that he’s been missing now for 11 or 12 days.”

Friends said McQuain’s death is even more unfortunate because she worked so hard to turn her life around and to protect her son from her problems. A recovering alcoholic who at one point lived in homeless shelters, McQuain, 51, found sobriety seven years ago and dedicated herself to William.
    [...]

Lopez was part of the former life that McQuain tried so hard to forget, friends said. In 1985, Lopez was arrested and accused of stabbing a man more than a dozen times and leaving him on a Pennsylvania interstate to die. McQuain testified on his behalf at the trial, after which Lopez was convicted and sentenced.

McCombs said McQuain never divorced Lopez because he was incarcerated. Lopez constantly tried to be a part of her life after his release years ago. But McQuain rebuffed him, McCombs said, and his entreaties for money scared her.

Two weeks ago, McQuain and McCombs spoke by phone when she and William were on a short vacation in Ocean City. McCombs said Lopez was asking McQuain for money and wouldn’t leave her alone.

“He wanted to get back together with her, and she knew it wouldn’t be good news for William,” McCombs said Thursday. “She was afraid of Curtis, but I don’t think she ever thought it would end up like this.”
    [...]

What happened to William remains unclear. It is also unclear how McQuain could have been dead in her apartment for more than a week before authorities were notified and how William’s absence from school did not lead to a missing-person report.

Manger said police will talk to school officials about how William’s absences were reported. Manger said it is possible Lopez called to say William would be with him.
    [...]

He said William’s school has a policy about children with unexcused absences. A parent or parents are called for four days. If no one is reached, the case is given to guidance counselors, who start calling emergency numbers.
    [...]

A Germantown neighbor said that on Oct. 4, a Tuesday, one of McQuain’s friends told her that William’s school had called to ask about his absences, which at that point were for Monday and Tuesday. She said that the friend had been calling McQuain’s cellphone but that the calls were going directly to voice mail. Knocks on the apartment door yielded nothing.

Mother of missing Maryland boy was stabbed, beaten
(CNN) -- A Maryland mother who was found dead two days ago died as a result of being stabbed and beaten, police said Friday. Her 11-year-old son remains missing.

The woman's husband was charged with first-degree murder after her body was discovered.

Curtis Lopez, 45, was arrested Thursday morning in Charlotte, North Carolina, said Chief Tom Manger of the Montgomery County, Maryland, police.

An Amber Alert has been issued for the boy, 11-year-old William McQuain, police said.

The case began Wednesday afternoon when a friend of the boy's mother reported her missing, saying he had not seen her for about two weeks and that he was concerned for her welfare, Manger said. Police learned her son had not been in school since September 30.

When detectives arrived at the woman's home in Germantown, they found Jane McQuain, 51, dead in her bedroom, Manger said. Her son was not there and the woman's vehicle, a Honda CRV, was gone.

Lopez had been known to frequent McQuain's residence but did not appear to live there, Manger said. Witnesses told police they saw him recently at the home, removing property and loading it into McQuain's Honda, he said.

The car was found Thursday morning, but police would not reveal where.

Jane McQuain was probably dead for 10 to 12 days before police found her, Manger said.

Police believe Lopez may have had a residence in North Carolina, Capt. Paul Starks of the Montgomery County police told CNN, but they have few other details linking him to the area.

Vigils Held for Missing Maryland Boy Whose Mother Was Murdered
    Oct 15 2011
Teammates, friends and neighbors of a missing Germantown, Md., boy whose mother was beaten to death held vigils Friday night, hoping that 11-year-old William McQuain will be found alive.
The boy has been missing since Sept. 30, and his mother, Jane McQuain, 51, was found Wednesday night, stabbed and beaten to death in their condominium.
McQuain's estranged husband was arrested and charged with her murder, but police have not been able to find William.
"I just want him to come home safe with no injuries," William's teammate Joey Lincoln said. "And if you know where you are please let him come home."
Outside Martin Luther King Middle School in Germantown, youth ministers, class mates and teachers gathered, candles in hand, to pray for the boy's safe return.
"As a mom of three little girls, I think it's very important since Jane has no voice anymore for William, that we be the voice for her and not let him just vanish," ministry leader Brandi Page said.
"I was telling my boys if they were missing I would want people to come out and do the same kind of thing, so I brought them out," church member Darren Petrie said.
Even though Curtis Maurice Lopez, Jane McQuain's estranged husband, was arrested in Charlotte, N.C., just hours after the woman's body was found, police said they still have no clear leads in their search for William McQuain.
The last possible sightings of the 11-year-old, who is described as a light-skinned, bi-racial boy, about five feet tall and 85 pounds, were the weekend of Oct. 1-2, police said.
Neighbors who told police they had "possibly seen him in some activity ... after that weekend, sightings like that dropped off," Montgomery County Police Department spokesman Capt. Paul Starks said.
Officials at Martin Luther King Elementary School, where William is a sixth-grader, said he attended and left school on Friday, Sept. 30.
    [...]
Our priority, our focus right now, is to locate William McQuain. We were hoping that we find him with Mr. Lopez, and we did not," Thomas Manger, Montgomery County police chief, told ABC's "20/20."

Montgomery County police are searching two parks for the body of an 11-year-old boy who’s been missing for two weeks and whose mother was found slain Wednesday night.

Police spokesman Capt. Paul Starks says police and volunteers are searching Damascus Regional Park and Little Bennett Regional Park for the body of William McQuain.

Starks says investigators have received leads that suggest McQuain’s body may be located in a wooded area in one of the parks. He declined to be more specific but says the search does not mean that police are sure the boy is dead. Police dogs and mounted units are involved in the search.

County, state and parks police are using ATVs, mounted patrols, and tracking dogs, looking for 11-year-old William McQuain, last seen two weeks ago.

"They're going to be focused on certain areas more than others," said Capt. Paul Starks, Montgomery Co. police spokesman. "The hope is that he is still alive. However, we are still using teams and people experienced when the person is deceased."
    [...]

Maryland authorities say they've gathered information that led them to search the Damascus park and Little Bennett Regional Park.
    [...]

A police spokesman says nothing significant was found in those two parks, just a few miles from the home where 11-year-old William McQuian lived with his mother. Investigators continue to develop leads in the case.

William McQuain Still Missing, Police Continue Their Search In Damascus, MD

DAMASCUS, Md. (WUSA) -- Montgomery County police will continue searching for the body of an 11-year-old boy who has been missing for two weeks and whose mother was found slain last Wednesday night

Jane and William's good friends told police that Curtis Lopez knew the woods near their home in Damascus. Their worst fear: that Lopez might have killed the boy and dumped his body nearby.

"Today, (Monday), the police department continues to lead organized searches for the missing boy. Approximately twenty officers and volunteers will search the land surrounding Comsat Drive in Germantown and the area of the Magruder Branch Trail in Damascus. A K-9 team from the Mid-Atlantic D.O.G.S. Search and Rescue is assisting in today's search," police said in a news release.

Investigators released details of a search warrant in Charlotte Monday. They say they found victim Jane McQuain's credit card -- and a box cutter -- in a hotel room her estranged husband was sharing with another woman. The medical examiner says McQuain was stabbed and beaten to death.

Police got on to Lopez and his apparent girlfriend when Pleshette Caldwell crashed McQuain's car.

Police Find Remains Believed To Be Boy, 11
BALTIMORE -- Montgomery County police say they believe they've found the remains of a missing boy.
They discovered the remains of a young, African-American boy at 9:11 a.m. Tuesday in wooded area of the county

Police Chief Thomas Manger said officers believe it is the body of 11-year-old William McQuain, whose mother was found dead last week.
    http://www.wbaltv.com/news/29517737/detail.html

On Tuesday morning, investigators concentrated their search in the wooded area near a Liberty gas station on Clarksburg Road in Clarksburg.

Police said at 9 a.m. this morning, a canine unit discovered human remains at the location.

Further forensic tests will be run to make an indentification.

Police said a surveillance camera at a nearby storage facility recorded 11-year-old McQuain and 45-year-old Curtis Lopez together on October 1. Lopez has been arrested for the murder of Jane McQuain, William's mother.

Investigators said the clothing on the body discovered Tuesday seems to match the clothes William McQuain wore in the video.

Montgomery County Police have found remains they believe to be 11-year-old William McQuain. Montgomery Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said K-9’s found the body of a young African-American boy at 9:11 a.m. Tuesday in a wooded area off Route 121 in Clarksburg.

Police believe the boy has been dead since Saturday October 1st.

Manger also said police have obtained surveillance video from a storage facility at 13000 Wisteria Drive in Germantown showing William and his step-father Curtis Maurice Lopez on October 1st. They are seen going to the facility twice.
    [...]

The father of one of William's best friends led investigators to a wooded park near Damascus.

He says he spent time there with the McQuains.

Damn it. I was so hoping this child had escaped. No good reason to expect it, but he was a good kid and it's a f***ing shame! Two murders! That bastard is going down.

At least we know that he probably didn't know his mom was dead and that he wasn't taken from the home in the TV box.

The surveillance video shows William McQuain, dressed in shorts on an October Saturday, rolling around the parking lot of a Germantown self-storage warehouse on the wheels in his sneakers.

“He was behaving like a typical 11-year-old,” said Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger. “Gliding up and down the pavement.”

What the 11-year-old didn’t know, authorities said, was that his mother had been beaten and stabbed to death in their nearby apartment. William was at the storage center happily waiting with the man police say killed his mother — Curtis Lopez, his stepfather.

By the end of the day, Oct. 1, police said, Lopez would also kill William and toss his body in the woods.
    [...]

Lopez and Jane McQuain had a long and troubled relationship, but only days earlier the two had taken William on a vacation to Ocean City. A friend said Jane McQuain called from the beach, saying that she and Lopez had argued and that she was scared.

Exactly what happened that weekend might never be known. Lopez, who was arrested Thursday in North Carolina, has refused to talk to investigators, police said. The police account of what happened to William and his mother is based on the evidence that had been gathered. Lopez has been charged with murder in the slaying of McQuain, 51, and police said they expect to charge him with murder in William’s death.
    [...]

Police found Lopez last week after McQuain’s 2011 Honda CRV had been in an accident in Charlotte, according to the court papers. The woman driving the Honda said she was Lopez’s girlfriend and told police that she was driving her boyfriend’s mother’s car and that the mother’s name was Jane.

The next day, Oct. 13, authorities found Lopez and the woman at a hotel in Charlotte. Lopez’s girlfriend told police that he had taken an Amtrak train to Philadelphia in September to visit family, according to the warrant. He returned driving the Honda and brought back a large television in a box and an Xbox video game system, the warrant says.

Officers found one of McQuain’s credit cards and a box cutter in the hotel room, the warrant says.
    [...]

It was McQuain’s hope that William would grow up without the problems that plagued her early adulthood, including running with a rough crowd, overindulgence in alcohol and eventually stretches of homelessness. William’s birth changed her, friends said, and she did everything in her power to keep her past away from William’s present and future.

Family friends said McQuain had been trying for years to keep Lopez at a distance because of his violent history. Convicted of attempted murder in 1987 for stabbing a man, Lopez served a prison sentence in Pennsylvania. McQuain, who married Lopez and testified on his behalf at trial, would occasionally visit him in prison.

After William’s birth, McQuain was determined to leave it all behind. She quit drinking, got a steady job and concentrated on William. She decided that she didn’t want a man living with her because she feared bad influences.

Apparently, having a man in her life at all was a much worse thing than she ever guessed it would be. What a tragedy.

Mother killed in her sleep, boy bludgeoned with baseball bat

Montgomery County prosecutors say a Germantown woman's estranged husband killed her in her sleep and beat her 11-year-old son to death with a baseball bat.

New details about the killings were disclosed at a Thursday bond hearing for 45-year-old Curtis M. Lopez, who is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of 51-year-old Jane McQuain and it's expected he'll be charged in the killing of William McQuain, Lopez's stepson.

Montgomery County District Court Judge Barry Hamilton ordered that Lopez remain in custody without bond

Prosecutor John Maloney said McQuain was found slain in her bloodied bed.

"It looks like she was killed in her sleep," he said. Maloney said McQuain's skull was crushed and a 30-pound weight with blood on it was found in the home.

Investigators found a baseball bat a few feet from William's body (in a wooded area near Interstate 270) and believe the bat was used to crush his skull, which broke into pieces, Maloney said.
