Glenda Grimes abused her mother as payback

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jackson County prosecutors have charged a 55-year-old woman with second-degree murder in her mother's Feb. 20 death.

Glenda I. Grimes, of Lee's Summit, also faces charges of second-degree domestic assault and misdemeanor elder abuse in the death of Glenda Stevens, 72.

Grimes had apparently lived with her mother in an apartment since March 2006, a few months after her mother suffered a stroke.

Grimes is accused of keeping her mother locked up in the apartment's only bedroom. In that room, Stevens was tied to a portable toilet for hours at a time, according to court documents.

Stevens suffered from numerous injuries, prosecutors said.

"Multiple blunt force injuries, infected sores that reached the bone, malnutrition, 25 fractures -- abrasions, contusions and lacerations," Kanatzar said.

Kanatzar said that in addition to several severe bed sores, Stevens suffered broken ribs and vertebrae and a fractured leg. Investigators said the leg had only been wrapped in tape, and at no time did Stevens receive any medical treatment for her broken leg.

The Jackson County medical examiner's report indicated the victim suffered 25 fractures that dated from less than 2 weeks old to more than a month old.

Neighbors told KMBC's Peggy Breit that they didn't know Grimes' mother lived there, but they had taken notice of Grimes.

"She talked very loudly and kind of erratically. I thought she was on drugs or kind of loopy, I guess," neighbor Casey Palmateer said.

"She seemed like a pretty nice lady, but she was kind of quirky, like she was a little bit off her rocker," neighbor Terry Fogelsong said.

Prosecutors said that someone had called Missouri's elder abuse hot line more than two years ago about what was happening to Stevens. An investigator suspected abuse, but nothing more was done.

"Somebody took the time to hot line this case, but for whatever reason, we weren't able to get help to the victim in time," Kanatzar said.

Grimes told police that her mother had abused her as a child and this was her payback, court documents show. Grimes also used home remedies on her mother and called herself a medicine woman for the Cherokee nation, according to court papers.

Bond for Grimes was set at $100,000. If convicted, she could face up to life in prison.

Prosecutors said Grimes had power of attorney over her mother's estate and that Stevens' $40,000 Wal-Mart retirement fund is now depleted, which could mean more charges against Grimes.

It is very sad. Elder abuse hurts me as much as child abuse does. Especially abuse of those that have already suffered previous medical problems. Even if this woman was abused as a child, I don't feel good about the treatment she gave her mother. That's not the way things should end after you have lived that long.....

I don't know... If the mother actually did horrifically abuse the daughter, then I say this could be a certain kind of justice. How often do people in these forums list some of the things done to this woman as something that should be done to a child abuser?

That said, it sounds like the daughter was totally off her rocker and I doubt that any abuse happened to her as a child. So I would have to agree that this horrifies me almost as much as child abuse stories do..

The Missouri Division of Senior and Disability Services received hot line calls in early 2006, court documents said. In March 2006, Stevens told an agency investigator that she argued with Grimes because she thought Grimes was using drugs. She also said that she was considering moving into a nursing home.

On June 1, 2006, the agency received another hot line call alleging that Stevens was the victim of neglect, physical abuse and financial exploitation by Grimes.

Still another hot line call was made six days later, and the caller reported seeing Stevens with a swollen and bruised wrist. The caller also stated that Stevens had said Grimes had hit her in the head.

Officials at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services declined to comment about the case. Instead, they released a short written statement: “The Division of Senior and Disability Services is responsible for investigating allegations of abuse, neglect or exploitation of seniors or adults with disabilities (eligible adults).

“Any report made to the Elder Abuse and Neglect Hotline is confidential, and therefore we cannot provide any specific information related to any named individual.”

But in a report cited by police in Jackson County court records, one of the agency’s investigators had already raised suspicions of abuse. A segment of the investigator’s report read: “Because of Ms. Stevens’ apparent bruises and the marks, which were not explained by Ms. Stevens, I suspect physical abuse is occurring. Ms. Stevens was very reluctant to speak of the bruising and mark. She was never able to explain what caused the wounds.”

Hmm..Atleast three reports and nothing was done...WTF!!!

The neighbors knew the woman was off but the agency investigators didn't notice it? At least the neighbors have the excuse that they didn't even know the mom lived there.

I'm a paralegal at a law firm that focuses on Nursing Home abuse and neglect (Plaintiff's side.) You have no idea some of the horrible things that we see while these elderly folks are supposedly getting "skilled" nursing care. Pathetic and inexcusable.

If this woman's injuries had been received in a nursing home, it would be a HUGE case...unless, of course, they didn't have insurance - which believe me, a lot of them DO NOT carry insurance. Fuckers. Try telling that to the family. It sucks.
