A sick image of
an octopus being sexually abused was found on the computer of a man being investigated for child pornography.
Nicholas Bland’s obscene collection also included pictures of
a snake, a horse and a dog being abused by men and women.
The 32-year-old, who admitted 48 charges of possessing extreme and child pornography at Manchester Crown Court, ended up in the dock after contacting police in March last year.
Officers responding to his early morning complaint that men were trying to get into his flat on Manley Road, Whalley Range, found him partially dressed and hunched over a laptop downloading child porn.
The paranoid schizophrenic was sectioned at the time.
But in October, when his condition had improved, police returned to arrest him over the child abuse images.
He was found to have replaced the computer which had been seized, and when the new device was analysed, the images of animals were found. These were classed as extreme pornography, which was outlawed in 2008.
Bland, who the court heard led an ‘itinerant’ lifestyle, has now been given a two-year community order with a mental health treatment requirement.
Judge Martin Rudland, sentencing, said: “This is a tragic case in its way. You are a capable man, you are an intelligent man and you have been since you were a student sadly afflicted by mental illness. There’s no suggestion you have distributed these images or sought to get in touch with likeminded individuals. ”
