Initial tests detected blood on a comforter found in a storage unit in Washington state belonging to Josh Powell, the man who police say killed his two sons and himself, according to a document filed Friday.

It was not immediately clear who the blood belonged to or how much investigators found on the comforter, which was among the items inside a unit at Western Self Storage in Sumner, Washington. The property report from authorities indicated succinctly that a "presumptive test" of the comforter had tested positive for blood.

Prior to setting a deadly fire Sunday at his Puyallup, Washington, home, Josh Powell was the only person identified by law enforcement authorities in West Valley City, Utah, as someone they were investigating in the disappearance of his wife, Susan Cox-Powell.

According to a search warrant request by Pierce County, Washington, Sheriff's Detective Ryan Salmon, last Sunday "several people began calling 911 saying they had received e-mails from Joshua Powell, telling them goodbye, that he could not live without his kids, and to take care of several things related to his finances."

Before authorities arrived, Powell is accused of snatching his young sons from a social worker who was delivering them for a supervised visit, locking the door, hacking the kids with a hatchet and starting an explosive fire in the home.

The search warrant request noted that the medical examiner's office found "sharp impact wounds ... on the back of the head of the two children," that a hatchet was recovered near their bodies, and that "accelerant was apparently used on the bodies."

According to the detective, Powell last visited the storage unit on the day before he was accused of committing the double murder-suicide. That same day, he withdrew $6,500 in cash from a bank -- money that is "unaccounted for," the document said.

In addition to the comforter, authorities took two plastic bins with miscellaneous items, a box with blocks, a white garbage bag filled with children's clothes and linens, another bag with toys and framed photos from the storage unit. Most of those items were handed over to relatives of Cox-Powell, the property report states.

Funeral services for the two slain boys -- Charlie, 7, and Braden Powell, 5 -- will be held Saturday.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that this is true, if they could ever actually verify. When Susan's body is found, it's going to be worse than in Caylee's case, and they couldn't determine her actual cause of death. I mean, broken bones and that kind of stuff will still be obvious, I would think, but the forensics are going to be a nightmare. But @Nell, you got me thinking. Maybe this is why Steven Powell is keeping his trap shut after his son did what he did. Instead of trying to fix himself a plea deal in his own case, he's psycho enough to be sitting back and savoring the memories. Not trying to sound really bad, but with the dynamics and makeup of the Powell family, there have to be skeletons falling all over themselves in a very very large closet in that family.

They were, are and will always be Susan's boys. Those little guys probably never were very far from each other during their short lives. It's only right that they share a casket since they will be sharing what comes after death. I don't know what the LDS belief is, which is why I said that. In my mind, it's comforting to think that the little guys are finally reunited with their mommy in heaven, and Josh Powell is burning in hell.

I have no doubt that he is doing just that.

Search resumes at recycling center in Powell case

PUYALLUP, Wash. (AP) – Volunteers sifted through tons of paper at a recycling center Sunday, hoping to find items that Josh Powell may have dumped before killing himself and his two sons in a house fire last week.
The search, involving about 20 people from Pierce County Search and Rescue, was expected to last all day.

"What happened last weekend really affected me. I could see smoke from the home from here," the recycling center's manager, Don Taylor, told KOMO News. "It would make me feel good if they found something here that could help answer questions about this whole terrible thing."

Authorities received a tip that Josh Powell may have dumped some papers at the LRI recycling center in the days just before the deaths.
The volunteers arrived Sunday morning and began searching through more than 20,000 pounds of recycled paper, junk mail and newspapers.

Utah woman says she saw Powell, father in mountains before Susan disappeared

A Utah woman said she saw Josh Powell and his father, Steven, in the mountains three months before Powell’s wife, Susan Cox Powell, was reported missing.

She told KTVX-TV they were in the Topaz Mountains and that they were not looking for crystals.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said the two were not dressed for the outdoors.

“They were not friendly at all. It was obvious they had their agenda and everyone else be damned. Their behavior was so out-of-the-ordinary,” she said.

The two were in the same area investigators searched last summer and uncovered a shallow grave.

Another Utah woman said she saw Powell and his two young boys the day after Powell’s wife disappeared.

A hotel employee at a Comfort Inn in Sandy, Utah, said she saw Josh Powell and his sons getting breakfast and talked to one of Powell’s sons briefly.

Robin Snyder was in charge of free breakfast at the hotel.

"I was standing right behind Charlie. Charlie looked right up at me and said, 'Do you know what happened to my mom?" and I went to say, ‘No, what happened to your mom?’” said Snyder.

Snyder tells KTVX-TV she recognized Powell a couple of days later in the news. She called the police tip line and never got a call back.

Meanwhile, searchers a Puyallup landfill and recycling center that went through more than 10 tons of paper found items belonging to Powell.

According to KIRO 7 Eyewitness News partners at the Tacoma News Tribune, they found a testament with Powell's name on it but police didn't clarify what that means.

They also found some paperback books with Susan's name on them and a map of Utah.

A hotel worker in Utah said Tuesday she saw Josh Powell and his boys the morning his wife was reported missing in 2009 – and when the older child asked a question about his mom, they left immediately. "He didn't even give the kids time to eat their sweet rolls – each had a small bite on them," said the worker, Robin Leanne Snyder.

Since the fire, authorities in Washington have discovered a comforter – apparently stained with blood – Josh Powell left at a storage locker. They found books and an unmarked map of Utah that Powell dumped at a landfill. And Utah detectives say tips have been flooding in.

Nevertheless, it's not clear they're any closer to finding Susan Powell.

Snyder, 53, said she oversaw the free continental breakfast for guests at the Comfort Inn in Sandy, about 16 miles south of where the Powells lived in West Valley City. When she showed up for work at 6:30 that morning, she said, Josh Powell and the boys were there.
"Charlie looked right up at me and he says, `Do you know what happened to my mom?' So I say, `No, what happened to your mom?'" Snyder said.
She never got an answer. She was called away to fetch coffee for guests, and when she came back, Powell and the boys were gone, she said.
Josh Powell kept his face down as his older boy spoke up unexpectedly, she said.

A sheriff and his sergeant in Washington state have bought burial plots next to Josh Powell's boys in order to block family members from burying him next to them, according to a media report Wednesday.

"The bottom line is, Josh Powell will not be near those two boys," Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer said in an interview with a Seattle-area radio program called the Ron and Don Show.

Josh Powell's surviving relatives wanted him to buried at the same cemetery as the two sons he killed, the city manager in Puyallup said earlier Wednesday. But that does not look like it is going to happen.

A scum out here killed his baby son at a shooting range out here and got a plot that faces his across the cemetery that reads something like "Daddy Loves you" He's not dead unfortunately, (I don't think) his parents bought the plot and stone for him. I feel so bad for the mom visiting her son to have to look up and see that.

When I read that I got a little misty eyed, I will be sending some money to help them replenish the fund. That was above and beyond and a true show of compassion and support. I vote they take Josh Powell's remains and have them cremated and flush them. If that was my brother/son that did what he did I wouldn't even claim his remains.

Actually my stepfather was such a POS his own family left him unclaimed for over a year, in the end they took him for the sake of his 3 children, they didn't even buy him a marker or plot, they just had a hole dug on his parent's grave and tossed his plastic bagged cremains in and walked away.

just said on CNN that the plots next to the boys was unsuiltable b/c of water pipes and drains so Joshs sister was trying to buy 25 feet away up the hill but they have ordered a court date to hear the case and until then theres a restraining order blocking him from being bured in that cemetary anyplace

Josh Powell should not be buried near the sons he murdered, and any of his family who think that he should be are as big of whackjobs as him and his father. Yeah, cremation sounds good, but his ashes need to be flushed or something. It's just heartwarming to see the lengths that the cops and crimestoppers or whoever will go to to see to it that his family cannot bury him near his murder victims. Susan's family should NOT have to go to court to see to it that he cannot be buried by those boys. It would be one of the Powell family's sickest perversions yet.

Josh Powell and his father were in the mountains scoping out spots to drop bodies. Who knows who all were on the hit list of these psychos??
