Oh, I think he's guilty too. It just drove me nuts that when hearing the case mentioned, him getting a lawyer which is a right we all have automatically made him guilty.
I'd go with his weak story, the fact he was the last one to see her, going out in the middle of the night etc.

I live in South Salt Lake City and no one in their right mind would have gone out with small children in that storm. The highways were so slippery because the snow is like talc - basically utah is a desert in the mountains - it would have been near impossible for him to navigate.

Where he took the kids is anyones guess, but, if he dumped her body in the more remote mountain areas, they won't find her until spring.

Wife's Disappearance Has Shades of Laci Peterson

Is it Laci Peterson all over again?
    [...]
An attractive young mom has gone missing from her suburban home, and her handsome (I think People is stretching that a bit) husband has hired a criminal lawyer amid questions about his alibi and level of cooperation. [...]
"I asked him if he had any idea where his wife, my daughter Susan, would be," her father Charles Cox told Good Morning America. "And he said he didn't. He was sincere sounding when he said that. I believed that." When asked if he still believed his son-in-law, Cox replied, "I don't know what to think anymore."
    [...]
    Financial Problems
Initially, police said they saw no signs of trouble of in the Powell marriage. But according to the Salt Lake Tribune, Joshua filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 2007, citing more than $200,000 in credit card debt. The couple argued over their financial problems, and friends urged Susan to get a divorce.

"She had lots of people tell her to end it and get a divorce because it was not worth going through that kind of heartache," Rachel Marini, who met the couple shortly after they wed in 2001, tells the newspaper. "But Susan didn't want to give up on her marriage."

The couple are members of a local Mormon church, where Susan last year discussed her marital problems at church meetings, the newspaper reported.

Murder your wife because you are in debt? Jeez. And of course, they are God fearing Mormons (and they only have two kids). I wonder if she had a large life insurance policy and when it was started...

OTOH, if you tell the police everything, there is the possibility that something you say, that you think is trivial, may in fact lead the police to the true perp.

In this particular case, the husband decided that the risk to himself was of more concern than the possible benefit of finding his wife (or actual perp).

If I were he and guilty, I would not talk, "on advice of counsel."

If I were he and innocent, I would tell the police that I realize that I am a tasty suspect,
so let’s do the lie detector thing, go get the sodium pentothal, ask whatever, so that the police would become fairly convinced that I was not guilty, and so then the police would follow the clues that don't point to the husband.
This is exactly what I meant by if you have a brain cell you will have a lawyer.People call it "lawyering up" and you have to ,they will take the smallest thing and trip you up to a point you can be fucked without a kiss. Also I have the book "For Laci" by her mom and if you get a chance, read it.This story is so much like hers except Laci wasnt given the chance to have her baby

West Valley City officers served a search warrant at the Powell home and had it blocked off while forensic officers looked for clues in the house. They began the search about the same time Susan Powell's family held a news conference in Puyallup, Wash.

"The fact that Joshua has been named a person of interest in this case deeply saddens the family, but it is not a surprise given the events and his reaction to them in the past week," family friend Shelby Gifford read from a statement while standing in front of Susan Powell's parents and siblings at the conference.
    Press Conference Video courtesy KOMO

Gifford said Joshua Powell's claim that Susan disappeared while he took his children camping in the West Desert at 12:30 a.m. Dec. 7 is "a huge red flag to the family."

"Susan ... would not have tolerated her children being taken out of the home to go camping in dangerously cold [conditions],"
Gifford read from the family statement.

However, Susan Powell's father, Charles Cox, said he is confident that the Joshua Powell will not harm their two sons -- Charlie, 4, and Braden, 2 -- who remain in Joshua Powell's care.

"He's always been a super father to them," Cox said. "There's no doubt in my mind that they're safe with him."

Gifford said the family had no indication that the Powells' marriage was violent.

"If we felt like Susan was in danger, as a family we would have taken the steps to get her out of the situation," Gifford said. "Some of the things you're learning about this week, we're learning right along with you."

I am glad her family and friends are finally speaking out.BUT I disagree with the grandfather feeling the children are safe!!!He thought his daughter was right up until the end.He says it himself at the end.If those were my grandbabies I would be storming the doors taking them and tell him after he clears then he can have them back.Or take them and hide out I dont know now im rambling but I wouldnt be sitting there saying they are safe with the man thought to have killed their mother!!!

    Question

Wet spots on carpet and fans drying, father taking kids camping in freezing weather (for a day and a half), money problems, 'great' marriage, missing mom...

Puyallup, Wash. » Joshua Powell's father said Sunday he believes his son is being "vilified" as questions swirl around the disappearance of his daughter-in-law, Susan Powell, who has now been missing for two weeks.

"The whole thing has just turned into a vilification of Josh and it will turn into a vilification of me, my ex-wife and my other kids," said Steven Powell, who spoke to The Salt Lake Tribune briefly through the partially open front door of his home Sunday.

"I'm not making any statement because it doesn't matter how benign it is or how supportive it is. Somebody will twist it around."

Joshua Powell, 34, and his two children, Charlie, 4, and Braden, 2, are staying with Powell's father, said John Hellewell, a friend of the Powells. He said Joshua told him Saturday he was fired from his job. He worked as a computer programmer for a trucking and warehousing company.

Powell likely won't be able to make payments on the couple's West Valley City home and will lose it, Hellewell said. He said he spoke with Powell about 8 p.m. Sunday.

"He just told me he needed to get away from the press and publicity and keep his kids away from it," Hellewell said.

West Valley City police Capt. Tom McLachlan said Powell left Utah on Friday or Saturday. Powell's attorney, Scott C. Williams, confirmed that Joshua took the couple's two children with him on the trip. Williams declined
    to answer further questions Sunday.

Steven Powell's home is in a gated community called Country Hollow in South Hill, a community just outside of Puyallup, Wash. Joshua and Susan Powell, 28, both attended high school at nearby Rogers High school. Susan's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, also live in Puyallup.

On Friday, the Coxes told The Salt Lake Tribune that Steven Powell isn't actively helping in the search for their daughter. The Coxes said they've had "issues" with Steven Powell in the past and aren't comfortable being around him.

Little other information about Joshua and his family has been available so far. His mother and sister who live in Utah have declined comment on the case. Kirk Graves, who is married to Joshua Powell's sister, Jennifer, has said in previous media interviews he wouldn't be surprised if Joshua Powell is arrested in connection with the case.

In Washington, many in the Puyallup area are familiar with Joshua's brother, Michael Powell, an Army veteran elected to be a national delegate for President Barack Obama. Powell ran as a Democrat for a seat in the Washington State House of Representatives this fall and lost.

According to Michael Powell's campaign Web site, michaelcpowell.org, Joshua Powell served as a "technical coordinator" during his brother's campaign.

Steven Powell asked The Salt Lake Tribune to not publish his comments after he spoke to reporters. Powell said his house and the subdivision around it are private property and said he worries if media discover where he lives, they will "camp out" near his house.

He told Tribune reporters to "please just go and please do not come back." Asked whether he wants a chance to speak on behalf of Joshua Powell and explain the reasons why he thinks his son has been unfairly vilified, Steven Powell said, "I don't need to explain anything. There is nothing to explain."

The Pierce County Sheriff Department -- the agency in charge of the areas where Steven Powell as well as Judy and Chuck Cox live -- is assisting West Valley City police with the case to find Susan Powell, spokesman Ed Troyer has said. Troyer declined to say who authorities have interviewed in Washington, but said they've been contacted by West Valley City police and are helping to gather any relevant information in the search for Susan Powell.

McLachlan said police learned of Joshua Powell's travels from Powell's West Valley City neighbors.

"We hope to still try to maintain contact with him so we can have an interview with him at some future time," McLachlan said.

"He's free to come and go as he wishes," he said.

Okay, so I was wrong about him being a realtor? That guy looks just like him: http://www.joshpowellrealtor.com/

Of course you lost your job asshole. You decided to go 'camping' on a Sunday night and didn't show up for work not one but TWO days. I would have fired you too. Suck it up and tell us what you did with your wifes body.

One of my best friends has a full-time job and is also a realtor on the side. In this economy it seems practical. I don't know many people looking to buy right now

    Quote from that article:

"Both have been periodically jobless in the past. And it seems money woes forced Susan to give up being a fulltime homemaker and go back to work. She was a stay-at-home mom when they filed for bankruptcy in 2007. At that time, Josh's profession was listed as realtor. "

A car rented by Josh Powell two days after his wife was reported missing was returned just 24 hours later with a lot of miles on it, according to police.

"It looks like there were several hundred miles driven," West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan told the Deseret News.

Investigators do not know where the car was taken or where Josh Powell was during that 24-hour period. There was no GPS data stored in that rental car, said McLachlan, who declined Monday to say from where the vehicle was rented.

Powell reportedly rented the car after police seized his minivan — his only vehicle — to be processed for evidence in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Susan Powell. The van has since been returned to Josh Powell.

Questions surrounding the rental car are just a few of many to which West Valley police would like Josh Powell to provide detailed answers. But as of Monday, they say, he continues to be non-forthcoming and has not accepted their open invitation to return to police headquarters for another interview.
    [...]

West Valley police attempted to search the Simpson Springs recreation area in Tooele County along the Pony Express Trail, but their efforts were hampered by fresh snow and the vastness of the area. McLachlan said Monday there were currently no active searches happening.

"There is just no specific area or location you can go to," he said.
    [...]

Josh Powell left Utah this weekend with his two young boys to spend the holidays in Washington. Neighbors have reported seeing many of the family's items being moved out of their house. Police say Powell is free to come and go as he pleases because he is not a suspect. Investigators do not know how long he intends to stay in Washington.

Really not the brightest bulb in the box is he.No matter what the circumstances its sad those kids eventually are going to grow up parentless. After Scott Peterson & watching the Drew Peterson case and many, many more these men still think they can pull it off and play grieving dad/hubby.And yes alot of women murder hubbys too but I think women hit harder when they disappear b/c society has almost gotten used to a "daddy free home" but a mommy free home still hits harder especially when moms been murdered.Hes gonna get caught just taking time and I would bet my house theres already a warrant issued ,they are just holding it until its a done deal and they can prove it.I just watched a news clip on lunchtime news his neighbors are furious he took the kids 950 miles to his dads home while shes missing. They all said same thing his family shouldve come to him.Police are spitting nails he left so hopefully he has pissed them off enought by doing that and they work extra hard(i know they do already) and find that last little piece they need to nail his ass to the wall. And judging by the dumbass look hes got hes not that bright thats a given and his ass being nailed to wall isnt the last time his ass will be nailed. He will become a easy target for the rest of the population in prison.

None of this should be a big surprise:
Several of her friends, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed to the Deseret News that they had turned over e-mails to police that she sent them in June and July of 2008, the point when all friends agreed the Powells' marriage was at its worst.

One friend confirmed that in one of the e-mails, Susan Powell said she was afraid Josh Powell might kidnap her two boys, divorce her or worse.

The friend said Susan Powell had talked to her one day about something she had written and left in her desk at work.

"She had mentioned about writing something so that no one would ever think she committed suicide. She said it would be so her boys would know that she would never kill herself, because she would never leave her boys alone," the friend said.
    [...]

Other friends had reported earlier that a notebook Susan Powell kept in her desk at work at Wells Fargo was among the items seized by police.

The notebook, according to one source, detailed threats allegedly made about a year ago against her.
    [...]

Friends say 2008 was a tough year for the Powells' marriage. They confirmed previous reports that Josh Powell was very controlling and that his wife had confided with a few friends that she was considering whether to leave him.
    [...]

"She prayed about it. She felt like she should stay and keep working on the marriage," another friend said.

One friend said counseling was supposed to be once a week, but they didn't always keep to that schedule.

The Powells filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2007. Money issues seemed to continue to be a point of contention between the couple in the years following.

But as far as friends could tell, Josh and Susan Powell were doing much better in 2009.
    [...]

But friends say she also started standing up more to her husband. She gained more confidence, they said.

"They knew how to push each other's buttons," a friend said.

Friends also noted that going on a spur of the moment camping trip wasn't necessarily out of the ordinary for Josh Powell. One friend recalled a time when Susan Powell had to get a ride home from work from another person because of a miscommunication with her husband. He decided one afternoon to take his two boys camping, the friend said. They returned about 3 a.m. because it got too cold, and the boys subsequently got sick.

"I don't know if he thinks things through sometimes," the friend said. "He just kind of picks up and decides to do it."
    [...]

As for whether Josh Powell had anything to do with his wife's disappearance, at least one friend didn't want to go there.

"At the very beginning, I was really hoping he had nothing to do with it, just because he has a different personality. The way he came across on the news wasn't good for people who didn't know him," the friend said. "At this point, I don't want to say anything. It's hard to talk about, anyway."

    Talking

"Both have been periodically jobless in the past. And it seems money woes forced Susan to give up being a fulltime homemaker and go back to work. She was a stay-at-home mom when they filed for bankruptcy in 2007. At that time, Josh's profession was listed as realtor. "

    That was him!
    Yay! I was right.

On that note, I work in the real estate market and a large percentage of realtors are complete tools and sleazy as hell.

First I've really gotten in on this story.

If all we're hearing from the news is correct, and I think even with allowances for minor details, it's obvious enough that the guy is guilty as hell. Seems like the cops aren't ignoring his probable guilt but are gathering up evidence in order to really hold the ass when they get him. I don't know why CPS is not stepping in, but I suspect that anything being said by Susan's family is tempered by knowledge that a probable psychopath is holding the children and if the courts cared, they'd have already gotten the kids. So they're probably trying to not poke the bear in his cage--the bear has those kids and full access/ability to kill or hurt them. I don't blame them for trying to at least publicly not insult him outright.

Hopefully they find the answers soon and I hope that Susan's precautions in whatever she wrote in the notebook or other places has clues to lead them to those answers.

The CPS can't take the kids. There's no history of abuse and he hasn't even been named a suspect, yet.

Very true. So I think it's smart not to poke at him much right now in the media (in terms of the family saying that they're not worried about him hurting them). Depending on his particular brand of stupid and lack of coping skills, he MAY break mentally if he's insulted or accused too much. *shrug*

Indeed. Hell - we could take it even further down the line to trial considerations. Let's say this does continue to follow along the lines of the Peterson case, where not much physical evidence was available... we don't want potential jurors getting the thought in their heads that this man is some persecuted martyr, unfairly "villified" by society as his father is suggesting.
