8YO Kerra Wilson Is Missing *found deceased*

Eight year old Kerra M. Wilson of Sioux County was last seen in the parking lot of the elementary school around 8 a.m. Wednesday after her stepfather dropped her off. School personnel alerted her mother Amanda Lopez Wednesday afternoon she had not been seen at school and that's when Lopez and school officials became concerned and contacted law enforcement.

Rescue personnel, citizens, a plane with a heat sensor and dogs canvassed the area around the school Wednesday evening without any luck. Members of the Mitchell Volunteer Fire department, CERT members, and citizens were to continue looking Wednesday night and if the girl was not found, Bartling says the search would begin again in the morning.

Bartling says a report the girl was seen at the Mitchell Subway store has not been confirmed.

Bartling says the girl, 4'2" tall and 78 [pounds, has brown, shoulder length hair with red stripes in it. The girl was wearing a sky blue short sleeve blue shirt, possibly with white numbers or letters on it. She was also wearing dark blue cotton shorts and had a blue knapsack.

Haven't we heard this scenario before where the stepfather/boyfriend drops child (male or female) off at school or wherever and child is never seen again. Not saying it's the stepfather cause there's not enoughienformation here to go on but I'm just sayin' it's been done before.

I really and truly hope she just went on an adventure and she's just hiding out but it's not likely is it?

The search for a missing eight year old Sioux County girl is expanding. Nebraska State Patrol investigator Monica Bartling says rescue personnel and others are now broadening their search for Kerra Wilson to the rural areas, and not just Mitchell and Morrill. The FBI has now joined the State Patrol SWAT team, and other local agencies in the search effort.

Bartling says there are still no real leads as to what happened after Wilson was last seen in the parking lot of the elementary school around 8 a.m after her stepfather dropped her off. Bartling says her relatives say she was a normal eight year old girl who was close to her family. Bartling says the girl's biological parents and stepfather have been interviewed, but said they are still "checking and covering all our bases " on whether they could be responsible for the disappearance.

Bartling says the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is also sending information nationwide and will have a representative in Mitchell later today. School officials are also talking to students at the elementary school, assuring them of their safety and also trying to get any information regarding Wilson's actions Wednesday morning.

Bartling says they have no information Wilson got into a vehicle but if anyone saw anything suspicious at any of the service stations or other main gathering points in the area regarding a brown haired girl dressed in blue they should call the Scotts Bluff County Communications center at 436-6666 or the Nebraska State Patrol at 632-1211.

Nebraska State Patrol Sgt. Monica Bartling has confirmed the girl had been dropped off at the west doors of the Mitchell Elementary School at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. The girl did not show up for school and the school notified her mother that she had not been in school.

The girl is described as being 4'2" in height and weighs 78 pounds. She has brown, shoulder-length hair with red stripes on it. She is described as wearing a sky blue short-sleeved shirt, possibly with white numbers or letters on it. She was also reported to have been wearing darker blue cotton shorts and could be carrying a blue knapsack with strings. The knapsack says "Kids Fitness and Nutrition Day" on it.

The girl's relatives reported that she was last seen in the north parking lot of Mitchell Elementary School around 8 a.m.

At about 4 p.m., officers with law enforcement and other agencies throughout Scotts Bluff County had responded to a staging area set up at the Mitchell Fire Department and searches were being conducted.

Bartling said an Amber Alert has not been issued because the NSP does not have any information so far that leads authorities to believe that the girl was taken. She said authorities don't have other information, such as a possible vehicle or person that the girl could be with that would be able to be provided to citizens.

"We are asking anyone with any information to please contact authorities," Bartling said.

So it's confirmed that she was indeed dropped off? How can they know for sure? She gets dropped off at school and then vanishes? So many damn questions...

Stepfather Arrested After Body of Missing Nebraska Girl Found

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – The Nebraska State Patrol says investigators have found the body of an 8-year-old Panhandle girl who in a remote area of Sioux County.

The patrol says the Kerra Wilson's stepfather, 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez of Mitchell, has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in her death

In the early evening hours of Thursday investigators from the Nebraska State Patrol and the FBI were notified by a local rancher alerting them to an area that he felt needed to be examined. The area was located several miles north of Mitchell. Upon their arrival investigators located what is believed to be the body of 8-year-old Kerra Wilson.

Preliminary identification of the body was made through articles of clothing, physical characteristics and evidence found at the scene. Due to the rugged terrain and time of night investigators were unable to move the body and process the scene.

Based on the discovery of Kerra's body and the evidence at the scene, Salvador Carlos Lopez, 32, of Mitchell was arrested in the death of Kerra Wilson. At this time Lopez is being held in the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder.

At a press conference on Thursday night prior to the discovery, a Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman said that Kerra’s mother and stepfather were cooperating with the investigation and that the only conflicts she had with them were typical disagreements for an 8-year-old. She said that the parents wanted to express their gratitude to the community for assisting with the search and asked the public to continue looking for their girl.

There had been reports of possible sightings of Kerra outside a Subway restaurant across the street from her school on Wednesday morning, but police now say that Lopez never dropped her off that day at all.

KNEB News has learned that 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez of Mitchell will be charged at 11:00 a.m. in Sioux County Court with first degree murder and first degree sexual assault.

The arraignment will take place via video conference at Scotts Bluff County Court.

Lopez looks like a thug, but I notice he's already in prison orange and his head is shaved. (Do they do that? Or is that his own look?) That always makes people look like thugs. Chin pubes just enhance the thugacity.

Well, I see on his facebook that it is indeed his look. The only enhancement offered by the jail was the orange jumpsuit. He likes to keep fit, too. He'll be having a good time in prison with his peeps.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Authorities said Friday that they found the body of a missing 8-year-old girl in a remote area several miles away from her Nebraska home, and they arrested her stepfather on suspicion of murder.

The state patrol said a rancher called police after finding something suspicious, and that investigators found Kerra Wilson's body Thursday evening in a rugged area of Sioux County that is several miles north of her home in Mitchell.

Police had been searching for Kerra since Wednesday afternoon, when her school called her parents because she hadn't shown up. Her stepfather, 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez, told investigators he had dropped her off at Mitchell Elementary School that morning.

On Friday, authorities said they don't believe Lopez, and that the last time Kerra was seen by anyone other than her stepfather was Tuesday evening, when she was with her grandparents.

Mitchell Elementary School principal Kirk Kuxhausen said Kerra did not appear in any of the security camera footage shot in the school or on the playground on Wednesday.

The girl's body had not been moved as of Friday morning because the surrounding terrain was so rugged and because the scene was still being processed, the patrol said. Investigators are still trying to determine when and where the girl was killed, State Patrol Lt. Monica Bartling said.

An autopsy will help reveal how the girl died and whether she was sexually assaulted, Bartling said.

Lopez was being held at the Scotts Bluff county jail, and was scheduled to make an initial court appearance in Sioux County later Friday. Bartling said Lopez does not have an extensive criminal record.

"We were hoping to bring Kerra safely home to her family; sadly, we weren't able to do that," Bartling said.

Kerra Wilson has three younger siblings who are all staying with family members.

A Scottsbluff man has waived his preliminary hearing after being charged in the death of his 8-year-old stepdaughter, who police say he admitted to killing. He has also decided to represent himself without an attorney.

Thirty-two-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez appeared Monday in Sioux County Court on first-degree premeditated murder charges in the death of Kerra Wilson.
    [...]

Kerra was the oldest of four children living in the home. Police say the three other children are now in the care of relatives.

It is unclear when Kerra was killed and police say the motive is still unknown. They also say it is unknown whether or not Kerra's mother, Amanda Lopez, was involved.

A March 2012 trial is anticipated in the case against a man accused of killing his 8-year-old stepdaughter in Sioux County last month.

Salvador Lopez entered a not guilty plea in Sioux County District Court Tuesday morning during an appearance in front of Judge Leo Dobrovolny. Lopez is charged with one count of first degree murder in connection with the death of Kerra Wilson Sept. 21 in southern Sioux County.
    [...]

Jim Mowbray of the Nebraska Commission for Public Advocacy was appointed to represent Lopez in the case. In earlier proceedings in Sioux County Court, Lopez said he didn’t want an attorney but he requested Mowbray’s appointment during proceedings Tuesday.

Sioux County Deputy Attorney Joe Stecher said that a notice of aggravation has been filed with the murder charge that states Lopez allegedly killed Wilson in an attempt to conceal another crime or hide the identity of the perpetrator of another crime. Stecher said the notice of aggravation allows the state to preserve the right to ask for the death penalty in the case.

If Lopez is convicted, he could face life in prison or the death penalty.
    [...]

Lopez is being held without bond, and Judge Dobrovolny continued that order.
    http://rapidcityjournal.com/thechadr...cc4c03286.html

In an interview after the court hearing, Mowbray said he does believe it could be possible that the case would go to trial by March, though "it's hard to say at this point." He said the timeline will depend on how soon the defense receives discovery information in the case. He filed a motion for discovery Tuesday, which was granted. Other motions could also hold up the case, such as whether the defense decides to seek a change of venue.

Stecher and Sioux County Attorney Adam Edmund have released little information in the case, including preliminary autopsy results that could provide more information about the girl's death. Mowbray indicated that he knows that the county attorney's office "is trying to minimize the amount of information that is public to avoid tainting the jury pool." However, he said, the defense believes it is likely that it will need to seek a change of venue because of Sioux County's small population.

"Due to the lack of people, I believe we will have a problem seating a jury," he said.

According to the 2010 census, Sioux County has a population of 1,311 people. Mowbray said he believes it will be easier to seat a jury in Scotts Bluff County, which has a population of 36,970, despite extensive media attention.

"(Potential Scotts Bluff County jurors) will know something about the case," Mowbray said. "Obviously, (the case) was on the national news. We won't get away from that, but we'll have an easier time ... of finding 12 jurors in Scotts Bluff County."
