Toys for Tots head arrested on suspicion of child sex assault
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The coordinator of Denver's Toys for Tots Drive has been arrested in California, accused of assaulting a child.
U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Kelly Farrington is accused of felony sex assault on a child, according to a warrant issued by the Arvada Police Department. Although the alleged crime happened in Arvada in 2001, a warrant was just issued within the last month, according to Arvada Police.
Farrington, who lives in Commerce City, was arrested in San Diego, Calif., late Thursday night. He is being held without bail, according to information provided by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
The Toys for Tots Web site lists him as the local coordinator of the effort by the Marine Corps to gather toys and donate them to children in need, and he appears in online photos of past Toys for Tots events. 9NEWS has not seen any evidence that the accusation is related to his work with the program.
Farrington will be in a San Diego courtroom on Monday. Arvada Police are expected to seek his return to Colorado for arraignment here.
Farrington grew up in Ault and served in tours of duty in Somalia and Iraq. He is currently stationed at Buckley Air Force Base with Marine Air Control Squadron 23. A call to Marine Corps Public Affairs was not immediately returned.
