OMAHA, Neb. -- A 6-year-old spent hours getting tested at an Omaha clinic after picking up a condom at her school playground.
The girl thought she'd found a balloon and put the condom in her mouth.
The incident happened Wednesday afternoon outside Lothrop Magnet Center near 24th and Pinkney streets.
Omaha Public Schools spokeswoman Luanne Nelson said a school nurse cleaned the girl's mouth and hands, and then called her ther. "I got the call around 12 p.m.," said Page King, the girl's father. "It sent shudders down my spine, up every inch of my pores."
King and his daughter, Danayjha, told KETV NewsWatch 7 what happened.
"I picked it up and I blew it up but it was on the ground," said Danayjha.
Danayjha's parents picked her up from school and took her to a doctor's office. They spent hours there while Danayjha received a shot for sexually transmitted diseases, just as a precaution.
"I needed some medicine," explained Danayjha.
Other parents said they were troubled Wednesday when they heard what happened.
"It's disgusting," said Cherrese Washington. "How did that end up on a playground of a school?"
Omaha Public Schools said employees inspect playgrounds daily.
Danayjha's parents said they are especially upset at whoever chose to leave a condom outside of a school, knowing so many children play there each day.
"If we don't say anything about it, if we don't step forward, then we have condoned it," said King.
