A North County woman has been accused of tying up her 11-year-old niece and shoving dog feces in front of the girl's face as punishment.
Rosa Nelson, 40, was arrested and charged Thursday with felony child abuse.
She also struck the girl with an extension cord, restrained her to a bed and taped her eyes shut in an attempt to control her unruly behavior, according to the warrant and police.
Nelson maintains she only held the excrement up to her niece's face "trying to prove a point to her," St. Louis County police Detective Tony Cavaletti said.
Nelson told police she tried other methods of punishment such as timeouts and groundings, but resorted to other tactics when those failed, Cavaletti said.
Her reasoning was "she was an out of control child," the detective said. Nelson, who had been the girl's primary caregiver since December, also was worried the girl was going to attack Nelsons' children, Cavaletti said.
"The aunt said she had tried everything she could and was not trying to hurt her but trying to make her behavior better," Cavaletti said.
Police reported that Nelson said she had used the feces, extension cord and tape only once each, but on several occasions used a belt and arm restraints to keep the girl in bed at night.

Not trying to make light of the situation, but I think holding dog shit would be punishing myself too...
Also, one of the other articles mentions that she runs a daycare out of her home. WTF? It sounds to me like someone is gonna lose their main means of income too.
