PLEASANTON — A Dublin doctor who fled the country after he was suspected of drugging and sexually assaulting a man and taking hundreds of nude and semi-nude photos of unconscious men was arraigned this morning — nearly two years after he became a suspect in the case.
Tony Shiu, 39, was charged with committing sodomy while the victim was unconscious or asleep; sexual penetration by a foreign or unknown object while the victim is under an intoxicating or anesthetic substance; using a concealed camera to take nude or semi-nude pictures of people in an area where they are expected to have a reasonable expectation of privacy; and two counts of sexual battery.
Shiu did not enter a plea and will return to court Monday. He remains at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on $1 million bail.
Shiu was arrested Thursday morning after he landed at San Francisco International Airport. He had been deported from Taiwan after authorities there determined who he was. Investigators believe the general practitioner fled to Taiwan after he learned he may be a suspect. Shiu had been living there, teaching English under the name of Tony Jiang.
The case against Shiu began in August 2006 after two men — one who was his patient— reported to police that they could not remember an evening they spent with Shiu. Investigators learned both men had been drugged and one of them was sexually assaulted. When police served as search warrant on Shiu's
property, they found 450 pictures of unconscious nude and semi-nude men taken in a medical setting. Some of the photos, investigators determined, were taken at Shiu's private medical office in Dublin.
When Dublin police returned in October with a warrant for Shiu's arrest, he could not be found.
The state medical board suspended Shiu's license to practice medicine shortly after the allegations against Shiu became known and revoked it last year after he failed to show up for hearings on the matter.
Shiu had a private practice in Dublin and until March 2006 also saw patients at ValleyCare Medical Center in Livermore.
