The girlfriend of a mother whose baby was found dead in a closet last week has been charged with first-degree murder and child abuse in connection with the baby's death.

The baby's mother was charged Thursday with accessory to first-degree murder and accessory to child abuse resulting in death.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said Frances Garcia, 23, faces a first-degree murder charge and Amanda Lujan, 24, faces the accessory charge.

Ten-month-old Adam Gonzales was found dead in his home at 849 Tennyson St., on the morning of Aug. 5.

Prosecutors accuse Garcia of wrapping Gonzales tightly in a blanket, placing him in a closet with a propped-up bottle and then covering his face with a blanket to muffle his crying during the night.

Lujan is accused of lying to police about what happened in an attempt to hinder the investigation into her son's death.

At around 8:30 Friday morning, Denver Police and paramedics were called to their home in the 800 Block of Tennyson Street on a report that the baby was not breathing.

When they arrived, they found the infant dead and investigators say they found evidence of child abuse.

Neither Lujan nor Garcia has extensive criminal records. Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show that charges between the two of them include misdemeanor vehicle theft, contempt of court, and failure to appear.

No cause of death for 10-month-old Denver boy left on floor of closet

An autopsy report did not reveal what killed 10-month-old Adam Gonzalez in August, but it does offer details about the events leading up to his death.

On the morning of Aug. 5, Adam was found dead in an apartment in the 800 block of Tennyson Street, after his mother reported the infant was not breathing.

Soon after, Amanda Lujan, 24, the boy's mother, and Frances Garcia, 23, were arrested. Police describe Garcia as Lujan's girlfriend.

According to an autopsy report from the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, Adam was swaddled in a blanket, placed on the floor of a bedroom closest with a pillow under his head and a bottle propped in his mouth. A blanket was also reportedly placed over his head.

While a cause of death was not determined, asphyxia and suffocation were not ruled out.

On Aug. 7, Garcia and Lujan were advised of their charges. Garcia faces charges of murder and child abuse and Lujan is facing a charge of accessory to murder.

Woman pleads guilty in death of 10-month-old

DENVER (AP) — A woman has pleaded guilty to a charge of accessory to fatal child abuse in the 2011 death her 10-month-old son.

Twenty-five-year-old Amanda Lujan entered her plea Thursday. Her sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 6.
Prosecutors say she lied about what happened when her 10-month-old son Adam Gonzales died in August 2011.

Another woman, 24-year-old Frances Garcia, pleaded guilty earlier this month to child abuse negligently causing death. Prosecutors allege she wrapped the baby in a blanket, placed him in a closet with a propped-up bottle and covered his face with a blanket to muffle his crying during the night.

Her sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 1.

It wasn't immediately clear what sentences the women face.
