Stories of Haunted Middletown Paper Mill

So Local 12 and a Tri-State paranormal group went to see if the claims are true. Local 12's Joe Webb takes us inside so you can decide for yourself.
Since the end of the Civil War, the Harding-Jones Paper Mill has loomed over Middletown's South Main Street and what used to be the Miami-Erie Canal. For about 130 years, the mill made some of the country's finest paper and employed more than 100 people. The paper mill was built in 1865 over the top of an old winery. It's been abandoned for years and when places are empty they often feel spooky and haunted.
But even when the mill was in full operation, the men and women who worked there saw and heard things they couldn't explain. Earl Gay worked at the mill for 37 years. He refused to go the top floor alone at night. In one area, he and his cousin heard footsteps when no one was around. "Some of the old timers that was here back during the depression, they said they seen and heard things they couldn't explain."
Kerry Johnson-Gary is working to restore the old mill and catalog the car parts stored inside. "I've been standing there and put a car part down, sit it there to get it ready to take a picture of it, turned around came back and it had moved back against the wall where it was. I was the only one there."
Kerry invited investigators from Tri-State Ohio's Paranormal Society to check it out. "We came in twice last year and pulled some pretty decent evidence so that's why we're back here tonight."
That was October 15th and they invited Local 12 News to follow along. This is the same crew we followed at Ryan's Tavern in Hamilton last year. There, our cameras captured a flashlight that.. untouched.. went on and off 4 times when investigators asked an entity named Henry to light it up.
Like the Ryan's investigation, we were armed with a night vision camera. Tri-Ops set up laser grids, sensitive microphones and hand held magnetic field meters. The team moved through the old mill, pausing in several locations. Early on, the entire team heard unexplained laughing. The meters showed changes in the electromagnetic field. "Can you light that meter please?"
And at one point, microphones captured a response to a familiar knock sequence... no explanation. But the most curious thing happened in the mill's kiln area. Our camera captured a smoke-like image, no one saw that night. It moves right to left across the screen and just disappears. The experts looked at what we captured and were stumped. "I've never seen anything like that. The shape, the movement, anything quite like that in all the years I've been doing this." No Earthly explanation. "I'm going to say that was some type of paranormal energy signal that happened during that segment."
"We have enough evidence from this investigation and the two prior that we've done that there is paranormal activity at the Harding-Jones Paper Mill."
Critics could claim that if you're looking for ghosts, you'll probably see them. We didn't know what we were looking for and found something we didn't see and still don't know how to describe. But one thing's certain-like Earl Gay, I'm not going upstairs in the Harding-Jones paper mill alone.

The Ghost of Trapper Nelson Haunts Hobe Sound

Hobe Sound – I'm in pursuit of a ghost. But as I glide up the dark-green waters of the Loxahatchee River, into the interior of the northern Everglades, I'm unsure that I want to find him.
"Trapper" Nelson (born Vincent Nostokovich) lived in the murky swamps and mangroves of the Loxahatchee from the 1930s until 1968.
He was called "The Wild Man of the Loxahatchee" – and with good reason. He stood 6-feet, 4-inches, with 240 pounds of muscle. He lived in a log cabin. He ate only what he could kill and he never went hungry. He hunted, he fished, he trolled the "River of Grass." And he apparently had little fear of the alligators, water moccasins, rattlesnakes and panthers who also lived here.
Trapper Nelson caught so many creatures that he eventually built a small zoo to house them, buying 800 acres from the surrounding landowners (the cages are still here).
He entertained visitors by wrestling alligators. He apparently had an eye for the ladies as well – many of whom hired guides to bring them upriver to his cabin.
As he got older, however, Trapper became convinced that people were trying to steal his land. And he began complaining of various ailments. He wasn't the type to go to a hospital. So he diagnosed himself with cancer.
On July 24, 1968, an acquaintance found Trapper Nelson dead inside his cabin, with a shotgun hole in his belly.
The county coroner ruled it suicide, that Trapper had done himself in because he figured he was dying. To this day, however, some locals maintain the killer was a jealous husband, or a disgruntled landowner who believed Trapper had "stolen" his land.
Some people also swear that Trapper Nelson is still there.
Cheryl Wells, park ranger at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, said during her first encounter with the ghost of Trapper Nelson in 1994 that he was looking for love. "If I weren't dead, I'd be asking you out," Wells said the ghost told her, according to Haunt Hunter's Guide to Florida, by Joyce Elson Moore.
"It was the first week of training," Wells said. "All of the sudden I heard him. He was flirting with me. (Later) I said, 'Was Trapper a ladies' man?' And (the instructing ranger) looked at me and said, 'How did you know that?'"
Another story has it that two men landed their canoe at Trapper Nelson's cabin. One was struck by something he couldn't see. Others claim to have seen Trapper waving from the dock, as if trying to get their attention. And some have been tapped on the shoulder inside the cabin.
Mark and Rose Watson live near the Loxahatchee, on the dirt road on which Trapper used to go for supplies. They claim to have seen him at least a half-dozen times. And Rose Watson speaks from first-hand knowledge... because she knew him.
When she was little, her older brother used to take her along when he rowed upriver to visit Trapper.
"My brother Buddy was 20 years older than me," Watson says. "And he and Trapper were good friends. After they put me to sleep, they would sit up most of the night talking by candlelight. I remember all the animals Trapper kept there. And I remember he was a huge man – especially to a little girl. I never saw him with a shirt on. And I don't remember him wearing shoes."
One night several years back, while she and Mark were watching TV, Rose suddenly felt goosebumps on the back of her neck. She didn't think anything of it at the time. But a month later, it happened again. This time, she turned around, toward the sliding glass door in the rear.
And she saw Trapper Nelson.
"I saw him clearly," she says. "A big man, with the outline of the face I remembered from childhood. There was – I don't know how else to say it – sort of an aura around him. He was moving back and forth, side to side, as if he was trying to see inside."
She heard him, too.
"I heard him running down the old path he used to take for supplies," she says. "Then I'd hear the footsteps stop, when he was looking inside the house. And then I'd hear him take off again.
"I saw him clearly," Rose Watson says. "There's no doubt in my mind. It was as real as it could possibly be!"
So... what do you think? The only way to decide for yourself, of course, is to go.
This tiny clearing in the middle of nowhere is a fascinating place. But bring a video camera for evidence. And don't go alone.

Trapper Nelson's cabin is located inside Jonathan Dickinson State Park (www.floridastateparks.org; 772-546-2771) in the town of Hobe Sound, about 30 miles north of West Palm Beach. There are no roads; the cabin is accessible only by boat. You can rent a canoe or kayak, and make the trip using your own power, or you can hop a ride on the Loxahatchee Queen , a 25-person, covered tour-boat that makes several trips a day (weather and tides permitting).

What I would give to be able to recover the photos from my old cell phone. I have 1 that would creep you all out. My husband passed away in January 2007. I had taken photos about a month later of myself with my camera phone and when I looked at them one of them there is clearly a torn gloved hand on my head. This photo was taken in my room which is where I always felt his presence the most. The odd thing is this the glove was torn over the thumb area. Now my husband died in a helicopter crash. He very well could have been wearing flight gloves (which are green like in the photo) and when I read the autopsy report sure as shit his injuries to that hand matched the tearing in the glove in my photo. I also have another on there where a full face (though blurry) and body can be seen on the front steps of our old house.
My son was 3 when his dad died. He didn't understand the concept. However; the hours after my hubby's death my son had the most bizarre cold zone around him. No matter where I moved the kid he was warm but everything around him was cold. We lived in San Diego and it was never as cold as the air around him appearred. My son would just stare into space. The next day when my mother and in-laws arrived into town my son on more then one occassion saw his father. My mom was organizing the shoe rack (she likes to clean to keep occupied) and when she moved my hubby's shoes my son said no those are daddy's shoes. My mom asked him where is daddy? My son pointed to the corner near the shoe rack and said right there. Then later that day my son had a meltdown because my brother in law went to sit on the couch. My son yelled and pulled at his uncle not to sit there. He was going to sit on daddy! He was so upset because he trully believed his uncle was about to sit on his father.
If that's not creepy enough..... the night I went through my husbands items returned to me from the ship (he was Navy and flew search and rescue) I put on his I-Pod and laid on the bed crying when I felt my bed jolted over and over again. Not to mention right before that I had my eyes closed and felt the door open to my room (when I looked the door had not opened) I have no idea where the slight breeze came from. The knocking of my bed continued until I asked him to stop. I had forgotten that we had always said whoever dies first has to give the other a sign of life after death. Failure to read this warning was noticed the next day. I had taken a bath to just sit and cry. The bath was hot. Suddenly the air was ice cold. I was confused how the temperature could very so much it was causing the water to steam (it was not cold in my house...the outside temp was 65 degrees and I had the heat on since in California you think that is cold) Then my back which was in the hot water felt cold....I sat up. I cried hard then...confused. I thought I may have been losing it until I got out and noticed light scratch marks down my back. It was probably 2 am so I couldn't show anybody. When I got up I went downstairs and told my mother immediately. She was dumbfounded becauswe there is no way I could have done it. Then when I went to go change I noticed I had another odd marking on my chest...no explaination of where it came from. So I finally said Okay I got the sign please stop leaving marks on me. I never had it happen again.
I don't remember exactly how long after that my son sat on my couch and told me detail per detail of the crash. He told me of the rescue effort and what was done to his father at the ship's hospital when they were trying to save his life (he died on impact) I myself had not known the things my son told me. I didn't get the report until afte we moved (8 months after his passing) I know my son told me these things after the funeral and I know it was before we moved. He was almost in a trance. I had to shake him out of it when he got visibily upset when describing ephinephrine being shot into his dad's chest. It freaked me out when I read the reports and everything my son said was spot on.
That's not the end of it. In the old house my son sat one evening playing cars in the livingroom near where I kept the flag box. My friend came in to talk to me (she never knocked if the door was open) and I was on the phone. She was like sorry come out when you are done I need to talk to you. I was in another room and when she walked by my son he said "My daddy is going to go outside with you okay" she was walking by as he spoke. She said that's okay. Where is your daddy? He then pointed and followed the right behind her as if he were following her out. It freaked her out and made her cry (we often hung out and bbq'd with this neighbor and her husband)
I think my son got it from me. When I was young I played with my friend Shelly. Concindently my friend Shelly looked just like my aunt who died months before my birth. I don't remember when I stopped seeing her or why. Probably age. When I was 8 years old I was sicker then a dog lying in bed. I woke up and there was a man in overall's and a hay farmers type hat standing at the edge of my bed. I said "Dad" thinking it was my father. A few moments passed and he disappeared. I was not afraid but confused. I found out later the man was my grandfather who passed when my dad was 12. Come to find out I come from a line of "gifted" people on my father's side. My grandmother had insane intution along with possible other gifts. The full extent of her ability is unknown since she was often considered a story teller or crazy lady. My father and most of his siblings are very sensative to spirits. I have a cousin who wishes she did not see or hear the dead. This is a real interesting story......my last for now:
My cousin was driving to the mall one day. Besides her was a car with a child of about 2 in a carseat in the back seat. The woman and she arrived about the same time and parked in the same row. She saw the woman alone walking into the mall. She runs up to this woman screaming "hey hey...YOU LEFT YOUR CHILD IN THE CAR" The woman turns around and looks my cousin in the eye and said there is no child in my car. My cousin insisting there is an she saw him then described the child to the woman. The woman's eyes filled with tears.....she pulled out a picture of a child with the exact description and said my son died a year ago. My cousin was floored. She didn't know what to think or say. She apologized to the woman and left. Ever since that day they visit her whenever they feel like it. She had to ask our grandmother to leave because she was driving her nuts.
I trully believe in spirits. I see them though I rarely hear them. Not as much as my cousin but I do. I feel them. I am not afraid of spirits. I have a ton of stories and one day maybe I'll find some of the other interesting pictures I have. My favorite is a picture that I would have never noticed the image if I didn't post it on myspace. My cousin left a comment about an orb in the photo. He said it looked like a face. When I looked again it is in deed my hubby's face. Maybe I'll post a pic of him with a pic of the orb for comparison.
Another pic I would need to get from my SIL is the scariest thing I've ever seen. Her mother went to the hotel where "The Shining" was filmed and took a picture in the lobby. The resulting photo haunts me. I don't even like to think about it let alone look at it.

Here is the photo which is of my brother, his fiance and my dad. There is an orb (you may want to make it larger since I noticed I had to on my laptop since the screen is smaller then my desktop)
What do you think? I think it looks like his with his head turned slightly.

The orb is too distant to tell anything for me. I am not very good at cropping and or blowing up images. I would like to see a close-up.

Im waiting for stuff to start happening now that I am doing small renovation the old man that died here always pops out and shows himself and moves crap around and just pulls stunts when I am changing things around that he doesnt want changed
My sons pic is on here on one of the earlier pages surrounded by orbs we think was the old lady

Thank you. I think he was very handsome too. Like I said to another poster, I think his face is so familar to me that's why I think it's his face. To me it looks like him (maybe not exactly like the picture) and I'm going to go ahead and believe he was hanging out for Thanksgiving that year (2007 the same year he passed)

Remember I said I was seeing orbs the othernight and then when I had my camera out nothing was happening??
Well my bestie in PA wanted pics of whats done so far with the renovating and I took some for her today and I have orbs again

I watched this episode of People's Court where the plaintiffs alleged the home was haunted. By their story I tend to believe them. Then again, I have seen and heard so much shit nothing surpirses me.
Well this one sort of did because the last thing I would think anyone would sue for on that show would be a haunted house.

The old man appeared in the backyard of her family's Ellerslie home from time to time, and at Heidi's young age, she had no clue he wasn't real.
"I saw him up until I was eight years old, on an everyday day basis. We would sit and have conversations...then he would take me by the hand, and we would go swing," said Wyrick.
"I would see her out in the yard, and see her hand raised, holding someone's hand. Many times I would hear her talking, but never heard anybody talk back," said Lisa Wyrick, Heidi's mother.
As she grew older, spirits started coming to Heidi in different forms...humans, animals, and sometimes, figures she couldn't even explain.
"I can sense when it's an evil presence or if it's a good presence. If I can sense evil, you wouldn't believe the feelings you can get...I've been literally been sick to my stomach," said Wyrick.
"When the bad spirits started coming into play, it got difficult...she would always describe him as a dark figure, having no features, just like a silhouette. As a parent,you don't know how to deal with it because you don't know how to protect her. If it was someone real, you would know what to do," said Wyrick's mother.
The media soon picked up on Heidi's story, and shined a global spotlight on her and her family.
After a Discovery Channel documentary, a book detailing her early years and appearances at paranormal conferences all over the world, many people have connected with Heidi and her struggles.
"It means so much to me to help people out there who are going through the same thing as me," said Wyrick.
Some out there, though, remain skeptics, and openly criticize the Wyrick family.
Hateful comments about Heidi fill Internet message boards on many paranormal web sites, showing just how polarizing a figure she can be.
"You'll have people believe you 100%, and then some people think you're crazy... there's no in-between," said Wyrick.
Even with all the media attention, Heidi has tried to lead as normal a life as possible, eventually getting married to her husband Aaron and starting a career in the medical field.
Now 22 years old, Heidi is slowly learning how to deal with her unusual gift.
"Most of the time, I've learned to keep a lot of it to myself, and I really don't even notice it. You get used to seeing things after a while," said Wyrick.
Only the people closest to her really know when something is going on inside her head.
Heidi has since moved from her house in Harris County, but she still continues to see visions all over her new home in Columbus.
Even with all the amazing yet scary things Heidi has experienced, her special gifts do come with a price.
Not a day goes by where Heidi doesn't wish her life could have been normal.
