Police: Gary Hickerson Knew His Wife Beat The Baby, Sabrina Hickerson Arrested Too

Memphis police have charged the mother and father of a 21-month-old boy who died Wednesday with aggravated child abuse, but officials say more charges could be coming.

Gary N. Hickerson, 24, and Sabrina E. Hickerson, 22, have been in custody since Tuesday night. Police said their son was named Adrien.

The child’s mother made the toddler perform exercise as discipline and he collapsed, according to a court affidavit. The mother called the practice “smoking.”

At the hospital, the boy was diagnosed with abusive head trauma.

The mother told investigators that she had uncontrollable rages triggered by her child’s defiant behavior and may have harmed him, the court document said.

The boy’s father told police that he was aware that his wife physically abused their son, according to an affidavit.

Because he knowingly exposed the child to his wife’s abusive behavior and knowingly failed to protect their son from the mother, investigators said his neglect contributed to the child’s injury and death.

More charges could be lodged after an autopsy report, police said.

According to a police affidavit, the toddler was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in extremely critical condition, Tuesday, June 14, 2011. While at the hospital, the child was diagnosed with abusive head trauma and was declared brain dead the next day.

Jesus. My daughter was the Queen of No starting around 18 months, with anything that involved a request or a question. She'd purse up her lips and widen her eyes and give me this watchful, calculating look. It was the cutest, funniest thing, and I'm pretty sure that fact that I kept collapsing into a fit of the giggles whenever she did it is part of why she's now a laid back, easy-going kid with a great sense of humour.

"Defiance" at that age is so easy to deal with - you just "persuade" them to change their mind. In our case her favourite "No!" was in response to the question "Shall we go and change that poopy nappy?" and "persuasion" involved a long series of 90 second time outs in her cot, punctuated with "Are you ready to change your nappy now?" and more "No!". There were never any screams, she'd just bounce up and down and tear the bedding apart, happy as anything to be in charge. Honestly, the kid would have kept that poop in there all day, just to be in control of exactly when and how it was disposed of. There were also a couple afternoons of long periods standing in the driveway, staring vacantly into space, waiting for her to get bored with the "No!" and let me snap her into her carseat, but nothing that ever got me past "mildly grumpy".

This is obviously a tragedy, but frankly if she hadn't killed him now, she would have within a year or two.

While this stage can be frustrating sometimes, I have never contemplated responding to her natural development in the demented way that this "mother" did. A Memphis couple has been charged with the murder of their son.

Gary and Sabrina Hickerson have been indicted for the abuse and murder of their one-year-old son Adrian Hickerson last summer.
Hospitals and Clinics Gary Hickerson, age 24, is charged with first degree murder and aggravated child neglect.

Hickerson's wife Sabrina, age 22, is charged with first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect in her son's death.

On June 14th, 2011, Adrian Hickerson was take by ambulance from his home at 6670 Windflower in Memphis and was admitted to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in extremely critical condition.

The child died at the hospital the next day.

The Shelby County Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head.

She didn't just get pregnant, out of wedlock like 41% of babies born (according to CDC, 2011).
