Deshon Marman Kicked Off US Airways Plane For Saggy Pants

A pair of sagging pants landed a University of New Mexico football player in jail on his way home from a friend's funeral.

Deshon Marman, 20, was flying back to school from San Francisco where he attended a funeral of a close high school friend when an airline employee complained that Marman's pants were so low you could see his underwear.

After he refused to pull up his pants, Marman took his seat.

"At that point he was asked to leave the plane," said San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Rodriguez. He said cops got a call on Wednesday that someone was exposing himself at the US Airways gate.

Marman was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest, the San Francisco Chronicle said. He was held on $11,000 bail.
    [...]
"He was not threatening anybody directly, but being on board an aircraft and being disruptive to the aircraft crew interferes with their duties and that could be a safety factor," Rodriguez told KGO-TV.

Marman's mother told the newspaper he was upset after attending the funeral and said her son was targeted for the way he looks.

"He's a good kid trying to make it, and he's going through a lot," she said. "And then this happens."

Marman transferred to New Mexico from City College of San Francisco, where he earned All-Conference honors in 2010.

Deshon Marman was arrested for wearing his pants too low

That sucks. It pushes the boundaries a bit far for my stomach. Arrested????

But seriously, how hard would it have been for the self-entitled 20yo star athlete to pull up his pants? I wonder if there isn't more to the story and want to hear what the flight staff has to say.

    From his school's newspaper:
Rodriguez said an employee of the airline noticed Marman’s pants were “below his buttock, but above the knees, and his boxer shorts were showing.

Frankly, good for them. Arrested? Too far. Give him TIME to pull them up. Keep string handy so offending people can tie two belt loops together.
But after a friend's funeral... Ouch.

"....below his buttocks but above his knees...." that covers or uncovers alot of territory!

I don't like to see their asses hanging out either but if he wasn't causing a disturbance and he sat down then make him stay in his seat so you don't have to look at his butt and then get over it, maybe he'll trip over his beltloops on his way off the plane, divine retribution!

I would think an airport/airline would have bigger things to worry about.

Unless, of course, he's the one in front of you during an emergency evacuation as the plane goes down....

He wasn't arrested for having his ass hanging out, he was arrested for being a belligerent jerk on a plane. You can't do that these days. The charges are for trespassing (I assume her refused to leave the plane when asked to do so) and resisting arrest (more mouth). The authorities had to get control over him some way, you can't let stuff like that fly.

Sorry, not buying the "he's sad over his friend" crap. The fact he wears his pants under his nasty ass no matter who it bothers pretty much sums up his feelings about authority. He's special, I'm sure. His mother even says so.

He's 20, not 12. Time to grow up honey. I don't want to sit on a plane next to some dude in his underwear and his snooze boner, thank you very much, and I sure don't want my DD in that seat.

This is what I found on this event earlier. Of course it comes from the site that Amazon loves to give me shit about!

The employee asked Marman to pull up his pants before he boarded the plane, but he refused, Rodriguez said. Marman allegedly repeated his refusal after taking his seat on the plane.

"At that point he was asked to leave the plane," Rodriguez said. "It took 15 to 20 minutes of talking to get him to leave the plane, and he was arrested for trespassing." Marman allegedly resisted officers as he was being led away.

Rodriguez told a local TV station that the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Marman, 20, "was not threatening anybody directly," but the airline's dress code forbids "indecent exposure or inappropriate" attire, and "being disruptive" in any fashion once on the plane may interfere with the crew. He was charged with trespassing, battery and resisting arrest, and was being held on $11,000 bail ahead of a scheduled arraignment Thursday afternoon.

Marman's mother told the San Francisco Chronicle that her son was in "an emotionally raw state" after attending the funeral of a recently murdered high school friend on Tuesday, and was targeted by authorities "because of the way he looks - young black man with dreads and baggy pants." She also said that Marman, an incoming juco transfer to New Mexico from the City College of San Francisco, hoped to honor his friend's memory by making it to the NFL. She called him "a good kid trying to make it, and he's going through a lot. And then this happens." For what it's worth, his official New Mexico bio describes Marman as a "true leader with a winning mentality." "So many of my son's friends are either being murdered, put in prison or in a hospital with gunshot wounds..., it's truly sad..."

Thus ends the initial account of one of the dumbest incidents ever recorded on this site, which is saying a lot. There's plenty to go around. There's Marman, wearing a potentially provocative outfit in a very public place and (allegedly) defying people with the authority to haul him off a plane and into a cell over something as trivial as his pants. There's security, seemingly creating a very real problem with significant consequences from an exceedingly small or nonexistent problem that presented no real threat and could have been prevented much earlier. There's the predictable cesspool of racist comments beneath the story everywhere else it appears Thursday morning on the web.

Personally, I feel a little dumber for having spent a portion of my morning on it, and for actually feeling compelled to offer this parting advice, applicable to any situation you can possibly encounter in life: When in doubt, always pull your pants up.

I get that they asked him to pull up his pants. Sagging pants not cool. The truth is there would have been no disturbance had they not made a federal issue out of it! IMO The kid gets on a plane and is minding his own business. I personally find skinny jeans more offensive.[I](I will not elaborate as I have nothing nice to say about skinny jean wearing guys)[I]

This is where I have a problem! Are you kidding me? Sagging pants is far from exposing yourself.
This just seems very petty to me.

I agree. It is a very fine line, but this guy seemed to push the tolerance limit. I can't sympathize with that one. This whole thing was avoidable!

My friend Katie travels in a t-shirt, boxers (sometimes yoga pants), and slippers whenever she flies. I messaged her this am and asked if anyone ever commented on her boxers and after she was done laughing at my random question...she said no.

I'm guessing if he had been a woman this wouldn't have been an issue. I'm also guessing that if he had just pulled up his pants instead of making an issue out of it he wouldn't have had any problems.

Anyone recall the disabled lady, right here at Will Rogers airport, that went through in her bra and panties? And she was removed from that flight IIRC.

I get following the rules.... So was there a no sagging pants rule listed? Does it specify a dress code when flying?
I am not in favor of Sagging pants by no means. I just think he was singled out! Just like you said about your friend, I wouldn't think a woman flying in boxers is appropriate either.

I am with you guys. I am sick and tired of seeing their assses sticking out of their pants. It would not hurt him one bit to comply with the airline and just pull his pants up. Isn't that the proper way of wearing pants anyway? Arresting him was over kill. My own 17 year old wears his jeans like that too, and when I see his boxers I yank them up so high, I think I may have made my boy sterile.

They should expel him from the country as well. Deport him to Liberia. This is my verdict and it is irrevocable!
Yet know, my master, God omnipotent,
Is mustering in his clouds on our behalf
Armies of pestilence; and they shall strike

And threat the glory of my precious crown.

he definitely did not respond with the best attitude but considering the circumstances it is pretty ridiculous.....i tend to think females traveling during summer generally expose much more. Unfortunately we are not far enough removed from race issues to not consider that as a realistic possibility. Also i generally am opposed to superficial limitations place on freedom, who cares what i think of the style, he clearly was passed through security so what was the threat

Well if you have to remove your jacket or hoody sweat shirt to go thru TSA security or get a pat down, I wonder if he got patted down? Not only do I not want to see some dudes ass hanging outta his pants, there are alot of things he could be hiding to make them hang that low. Ok, I ain't talking about his pecker there either lol. But seriously I think public indecency could apply.

"An airline spokeswoman told the Chronicle the company's dress code forbids "indecent exposure or inappropriate" attire."

So, according to this, the following "kinds" of people could get thrown off the plane, possibly arrested, fined:

    Plumber's (Plumber's crack - ewwwww!)
Large breasted women in tight tops
People in see through or mesh tops
    People wearing spandex
Fat people wearing see through tops and spandex pants
    Anorexic people - see above-
Pre-teen girls wearing tissue stuffed bras
    Anyone wearing Daisy Dukes
Men and/or women wearing tops too short exposing belly rolls
    Babies wearing diapers only
    Emo's
    Drag Queens
    Butches
    Punk Rockers
    Anyone wearing ethnic, traditional clothing
    Rednecks
    "White trailer trash"
    Ghetto
    Disco
    Rock 'n' Rollers
    Heavy metal
.................Hell, everyone should just stay home and screw the aggravation...........
I will never reach enlightenment. Too many assholes I'd like to send through a woodchipper.

Thrown off the plane for some of that I can see. Get arrested, no. Huge difference. As a private business they have a right to specify a dress code. it's not like they are the only airline in town. Take your business elsewhere if you don't like the policy. I have a couple airlines I will not fly due to policies I don't like. Although violating any of them would rarely result in a resisting arrest charge. Only my own shithead behavior could cause that.

I agree that it started as a petty bunch of crap over a stupid fashion statement. But if I got asked to fix my <insert fashion stupidity here> before I boarded, damned tootin' I would. It's not like a permanent part of me or anything I would be even doing X years from now. Fashion being what it is, I bet down the line this dude even laughs at himself for such crap.

At minimum, the guy held his pants level as being more important that wherever he wanted to go. So let him. US Airways just said "Do it elsewhere". Everything else beyond that is on his own behavior. His decision. His actions. Buck up and be a man.

What I find interesting is..I don't think it was stated who called the police, it could be the airline, or it could be another passenger or normal people in the airline, that saw his really low pants and deemed that he was exposing himself.
