The 24-year-old was initially arrested for aggravated child abuse, but the charges were elevated to first-degree murder after the baby died.
In addition to murder, Roe also faces a charge of aggravated rape of a child.
An examination of Murley after she was hospitalized revealed bruising to her vaginal area, right hip and left side of her stomach, as well as a bite mark on her back, court documents revealed, according to The Jackson Sun.
Police don't believe the child's father, Phillip Murley Jr., was involved in his daughter's death. The abuse is believed to have taken place at Roe's father's home.
"It's sad that something like this could happen to a child," Terry Patterson, a Bells resident, told The Jackson Sun. "Folks around here really seem to care. It's a shock."

The comment that I have quoted here with the link was about an update on the dad's FB which stated he was now "Single"...friends were basically saying "Wha???" and he was saying that she had murdered his daughter, etc. I viewed it the same day that Courts29 posted it here.

I went back to his FB just now to see if there was anything new and that update (along with the comments) has been deleted and he is once again showing as "in a relationship" (that update is not showing either so I don't know when he changed it back).

I just found that odd.

Also, Molly's FB now appears to be deleted.

The poor child suffered a severe brain injury from the impact, the affidavit says. An examination also showed severe bruising to her vaginal area, her right hip and the left side of her abdomen, and a bite mark on her back. She's so sweet yet so evil, really poor child.

This is just so sad! She said she became frustrated with the baby and pushed her? How the hell did this sweet angel end up with a bite mark on her back as well as signs if sexual abuse if all she did was push her? Her story does not add up to the injurys inflicted. There Is so much more to come out of this story! I joined dads Facebook and the photos of the poor wee angel are so sweet, she really was a little cutie pie. My god she has a baby of her own and didn't abuse him but decided to torture her bf baby instead. Evil pure evil!

I know this is a lame question, But how is it physically possible for a woman can rape a female child? I mean she could penetrate her with a finger, but that is called digital penetration in the pedo world

There is odd component to this that deviates from the 'norm' of these cases: It sounds like the pseudo-step-critter and the baby were alone for a spell, right? Real mom had kid most the time, and Dad I don't think would've put up with step-critter lashing out. So this wasn't some culmination of abuse as is typical in these cases. The step-critter either meticulously planned the horror show or step-critter just lost it. Snapped like a twig. Did all that damage in what, couple hours?

That's pretty rare, and pretty disturbing.

Exactly what's bugging me about it. There are tons of kids on this site that die to child abuse, but it's usually prolonged and the deaths are typically from the children just not being able to take more abuse. This one is odd in that if she did it, and I am in no way saying she didn't, then it happened in a really short amount of time with no prior abuse. I could almost buy her story that she got angry, threw the baby, and the baby hit her head...except for the vaginal bruising and the bite mark.

I used to think that 'rape' meant intercourse, but newer laws have broadened the legal definition to include any type of penetration:

The World Health Organization defined rape in 2002 as "physically forced or otherwise coerced penetration – even if slight – of the vulva or anus, using a penis other body parts or an object."

And I agree, bitch does have a 'Killer Casey' resemblence about her!

Lawyer appointed for Roe: Woman appears via camera in court, charged with rape, murder of toddler

ALAMO — The face of Molly Jane Roe, 24, of Bells, flashed across a video screen Thursday morning in a Crockett County General Sessions Court courtroom in Alamo, where she faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated rape of 17-month-old Maleeya Marie Avalon.

"I don't understand how anyone could even think about doing such a crime to a child," said Jessica Lidy, a friend of Avalon's parents, Phillip Murley and Crystal Gilbert.

She said it was very hard for them to be in the courtroom Thursday morning.

"They broke down crying," she said.

Lidy, 21, has known Phillip Murley for about five years and is friends with both parents. She said Murley and Gilbert had been in Nashville, where their child was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center on June 7.

They returned Wednesday to hold a funeral service for their daughter at a Huntingdon funeral home, Lidy said.

"They're torn down," she said.

Roe was arrested June 9 and initially charged with aggravated child abuse, upgraded to first-degree murder and aggravated rape of a child after the toddler died.

On Thursday, she was appointed a public defender and is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. June 23 for a status check. She is being held without bond.

Lidy told a small group of reporters that with rumors floating around as to the incidents leading up to Maleeya Avalon's death, the parents just want to understand what happened to their child.

"They've got a lot of anger built up," she said.

Markita Mosier, 20, and two other women wore pink shirts with "RIP Maleeya" scribbled in purple and silver glitter paint Thursday. The sleeves were scrunched with purple ribbons as they stood outside the Crockett County General Sessions Court and made their way inside.

Mosier said the group of mothers wore the shirts out of support for the family and the baby.

"Anytime I even think about it I get upset," Mosier said.

She has a 1-year-old-daughter and said it is the community's job to protect their children from "crimes so awful."

Roe is accused of throwing the child and causing her to hit her head on a blunt object, causing severe brain injury, according to the affidavit. An examination also showed severe bruising to her vaginal area, her right hip and the left side of her abdomen, and a bite mark on her back.

Supporters of the Gilbert and Murley families said they could not understand the incident.

She appeared in court via video shown from jail Thursday after hiring Jackson attorney Joseph Howell to represent her.

Howell said he was still in the beginning stages of research on the case and could not divulge specifics about his plan. But he offered sympathetic words to the family of the victim.

"As a father myself, my heart goes out to the family for this tragic accident," Howell said.

He asked the people of Crockett County to withhold any judgments about his client before they hear her side.

Both Phillip Murley and Crystal Gilbert, parents of the young victim, sat in back of the small General Sessions Court room Thursday along with other family.

A District Attorney representative told Murley the case likely would go before a grand jury after the appropriate legal steps, the preliminary hearing being next.

Roe's Thursday court appearance was a status check scheduled last week following her June 9 arrest.

She initially faced charges of aggravated child abuse, upgraded to first-degree murder and aggravated rape of a child after the toddler died.

I'm wondering about this too. You don't often hear of a young woman raping a baby. As far as sexual perversions go, I think that would be an extremely, extremely rare case. I'm wondering if the sexual abuse came from someone else. At any rate, I imagine this woman must be either A) a complete and utter psychopath, or B) strung out on drugs/alcohol at the time of the crime, or C) both. This is not the behavior of any normal human being. RIP sweet little one.....

i agree this is not normal in the least!! there is a reason behind the sexual assault and its either one of the explanations you gave or she did it to try and cover her tracks.

was looking at the dads FB and he was saying how he was watching a movie and laughing his ass off at it!!! just thought that was a bit weird??? i certainly would not be lmao at any movie if my baby had just been murdered and sexually assaulted but i suppose people react differently!

There's a thought. She might be relying on everybody's reluctance to believe a woman could do such a thing. I have to say, though, I have been on this site long enough that I would exonerate nobody on the strength of their gender, and if it was really an accident, it would have been a lot easier for people to believe that if the child had had no other injuries.

Or maybe she just kicked her there during the abuse on purpose. I'm not sure the rape charge is based on an actual sex act and not based on the fact that baby had injury in that specific area.
