An 84-year-old woman was raped and beaten by an intruder in her home, the Broward Sheriff's Office said on Monday.
Deputies asked for the public's help to find her attacker, and planned to distribute fliers and canvass the victim's neighborhood, southwest of State Road 7 and West McNab Road, on Monday afternoon.
The woman, who was bruised during the Sunday night attack, was taken to University Hospital and Medical Center in Tamarac. Then she was examined at a sexual assault treatment center.
Her attacker is described as being in his early 20s, up to 5-foot-9, with a small to medium build.
She was home alone watching television at about 10 p.m., when the man knocked on her front door and said things she didn't understand, the Sheriff's Office said. She didn't open the door.
An hour later, she went to check out a noise she heard coming from her bedroom. There she found the stranger, who had entered through a window.
She grabbed him and told him to leave. He punched her in the face, pushed her onto her bed and, though she tried to fight him off, sexually assaulted her.
After the rape, he fled through the same window. The Sun Sentinel is not publishing the woman's name because of the nature of the attack.
