Really@gee, thats the most important thing here. Healing this little girl. Physically it will be easy. Emotionally and psychology-wise, I think she is only going to be as good as she is led to believe. She will have no memory of this. Only what people tell her as she grows up. I wonder how that will be handled.
This piece of shit will go to prison, probably Monroe Penitentiary. He may or may not to a long time. But this girl got a life sentence, depending on how it is handled. Sometimes I wonder if peopleare better off not knowing what happened to them when young, But then, perp will have gotten away with it.

No, I think there are always emotional consequences and they can't be treated without understanding where they came from. It might be best to let the child get significantly older before explaining what happened, but they need to work with her to help her process the fears she has now.

God, of all the stories I read, I think the baby rapers are the ones that make me the sickest. I swear, you guys have some good word to visual skills, but my mind was right there as well. All I can think about was what he was doing to her and how she was probably screaming at the top of her lungs until she couldn't scream anymore, and he kept on. I look at his picture and I am actually nauseous. It puts a face on the evil. Oh, he's an ugly one.
That baby girl probably won't remember what happened to her, but maybe sometime down the road in her life, she might have some problems or she might be afraid of someone and she won't even know why it's happening, I'm afraid. Sometimes, it's best that they cannot remember, but when there are future problems, maybe health problems or psych problems, I wonder how that would be handled.
I cried for this little baby girl.

I don't think she will remember consciously but subconscious is a diff. mysterious thing. Traumatic memories work different than ones you mentioned, tho your brother as he went thru that sounds traumatic. 20 months is awful young tho. Physically, I think baby girl will be scared for life due to the extreme trauma. She might not be able to have children herself later in life. How awful that would be.

This story just destroys me. My little girl is 19 months old, and I cannot even IMAGINE this situation without seeing her beautiful little self. Toddlers little bodies are just so delicate, and I hate this man for hurting a helpless innocent in such a horrendous and violent way. Reconstructive surgery??? And who knows what this beast did to her internally... Oh, I so hope that this little girl heals completely and that she goes to a new home where she is surrounded and innundated in so much love that whatever psychological damage this has done to her is minimized or eradicated.

OMG Malq, I hadn't even read the article but had seen people making comments to your post. So I had to read your post first, after reading it I had so many emotions it wasn't even funny. All I could think of was wanting to find the biggest, fattest, longest, most uncomfortable thing I could find and shove it up his fucking ASS so that he had so much pain and rectal damage that he wishes he would be dead. A jury in Island County Superior Court took just 15 minutes to return a verdict following four days of testimony so horrific and unsettling that the judge offered jurors the opportunity to speak with counselors afterward.
The jurors found Ryan Stephenson, a 27-year-old Oak Harbor man, guilty of first-degree rape with aggravating circumstance and a special allegation and first-degree assault of a child with aggravating circumstances.
Stephenson was on trial for raping his girlfriend's 21-month-old daughter, beating her repeatedly, stuffing her into a backpack and kicking her "soccer style." Senior Deputy Prosecutor Eric Ohme presented evidence that showed Stephenson was extremely abusive toward the little girl because she was a living reminder that his girlfriend had a child with another man.
"Jealousy, resentment and rage. That's what lead to the defendant's savage raping and beating of that little girl," Ohme told the jury during closing arguments, motioning toward a poster-size photo of the toddler and her 5-year-old brother.
The defense attorney, Peter Simpson of Coupeville, didn't present any witnesses and Stephenson chose not to take the stand in his defense. Simpson argued that the prosecution didn't prove the elements of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. He conceded that Stephenson repeatedly beat the girl, but described it as parental punishment that went way too far. He argued that there was no rape and that the beatings didn't amount to first-degree assault.
Injury severe
Much of the testimony presented by Ohme dealt with the severe injury the child sustained from the rape. He called three "renowned medical experts" to the stand to describe the extreme injury and the reconstructive surgery to repair the wound. Over the objections of the defense attorney, he presented the jury with close-up photos of the bloody injury and extensive bruising on the girl's body; a couple of the jurors wiped back tears.
Julia Mitzel, a nurse practitioner who's a board-certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner at Seattle Children's Hospital, testified that she had to collect evidence and take photos after the girl was rushed to the operating room because doctors were worried that the injuries were potentially life threatening. She described the "incredibly numerous" bruises that blackened the girl's buttocks, crotch, lower back and dotted her face. She said the girl's genital injury was "extremely severe" and very rare.
"This is the most serious injury I've ever seen in a child or an adult," she said, adding that she's done sexual assault exams on more than 1,000 patients in her career.
Dr. Katherine Debiec, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's and a professor at the University of Washington, was on the team of seven physicians who performed the reconstructive surgery. On the stand, she said the child suffered a "fourth-degree perineum laceration" that required surgeons to suture together layers of muscle and tissue. She described the child as "profoundly anemic" from a loss of blood. She said the operation was a success, but only time will tell if the injury will have a long-term affect on the victim's physical functioning.
Rebecca Wiester, a pediatrician at Harborview and medical director of Child Protection Program at Seattle Children's, examined the girl and scrutinized the case after the surgery. She also testified about the extent of the child's injuries. She said the sexual injury could only have been caused by penetrating force or impalement and it couldn't have happened when the girl was clothed or wearing diapers.
Wiester also testified that Stephenson assaulted the girl with enough force to cause the likelihood of death.
The star witness
The star witness in the case, however, was Detective Tony Slowik with the Oak Police Department. He investigated the allegations and laid out much of the evidence over hours of testimony.
Slowik testified that he and a couple of other detectives started investigating about three hours after the little victim was taken to Whidbey General Hospital on May 27, 2011; the child was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and then transferred to Seattle Children's Hospital for surgery.
Stephenson had been living at the apartment with his girlfriend and the girl, as well as a 5-year-old boy he and the woman have in common. He was taking care of the children alone that day because the girlfriend had an appointment.
Slowik described how Stephenson's story about what had happened changed with each telling. He initially tried to blame his son, saying that the boy must have caused the injury by putting something inside the toddler.
He later admitted that he punched the girl on the bottom numerous times and stretched her legs apart doing playful stretching exercises; he suggested the beating or stretching could have caused her injuries.
"He said he was pretty sure it was of his doing, he just didn't know how," Slowik said.
At one point, another detective suggested that it would lift a burden from his soul to tell the truth.
"He said something like, I don't have a soul. Trust me," Slowik said.
Stuffed in backpack
According to Slowik's testimony, Stephenson eventually admitted to beating the girl because he was mad that she was eating her breakfast slowly. He said he then stuffed her into a backpack and swung it around before throwing it toward the couch; the backpack missed and fell on the floor. He kicked the backpack "five to seven times, as hard as he could, soccer style," the detective said.
Slowik said Stephenson released the girl, but then beat her again later. Stephenson told the detective that he discovered she had a bloody diaper and called his girlfriend for help.
Slowik also testified that Stephenson admitted to raping the toddler with objects in the past. The detective said Stephenson giggled when he described how he forced an object into the girl in order to keep her awake all night long.
Stephenson suggested that the previous assaults could account for the girl's severe injuries, but he angrily insisted that his actions were not sexually motivated, Slowik testified.
A forensic scientist at the Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory matched blood found inside the backpack to the girl's DNA profile. The prosecutor charged Stephenson with first-degree assault for kicking her while she was in the backpack. Ohme said prior to the trial that he wasn't able to charge him with the prior rapes because there was no independent corroboration — such as DNA evidence — that the crimes occurred.
During his closing arguments, Ohme brought out the purple backpack as a prop and described the assault.
"Imagine the terror of that little girl in this backpack," he said. "Imagine a grown man kicking a tiny person inside that backpack."
"This was a sadistic, malicious rape and a sadistic, malicious assault of a little girl," he concluded.
Counseling for jurors
The jury immediately found Stephenson guilty of both counts and the aggravating factors, which include the fact that the victim was younger than 15 and particularly vulnerable. Before releasing the jurors, Judge Alan Hancock — who became emotional himself — offered them the opportunity to speak with mental health counselors because of the difficult nature of the trial.
Stephenson will likely be sentenced in June. Since he was convicted of a sex crime, the Department of Corrections must complete a pre-sentence investigation on Stephenson with a sentencing recommendation. In an unusual move, the defense attorney made it clear to the judge that Stephenson will not cooperate with the investigation.
Ohme hasn't decided on his sentence recommendation yet, but he said it will be significant. Stephenson is facing an indeterminate sentence of up to life with a minimum of at least 30 years in prison. That means he'll have to serve the minimum sentence and then a prison review board will decide if he should be released.
The little girl and her brother were removed from their home by Child Protective Services. They are now living with relatives and are thriving, according to the prosecutor's office.

Thank you, @malq. The grandma came on the chatbox yesterday to say he'd been found guilty Tuesday, but I couldn't find any reports on it. Good to know he's going away, and I sincerely hope the sentence is maximum. I would also like to hear about him being treated poorly in prison, but maybe that's asking for too much.
15 minutes -- stunning!
The defense didn't call witnesses -- also outstanding. Barely a defense strategy there.
Curious about the fact that the little girl is still in foster care. Are we going to find out that the mother is also being charged? Sounds like she was ignoring her little girl's torment at this jackass's hands.
So happy to know she's thriving. Hell, I'm happy to know she's alive. It's a miracle.Slowik also testified that Stephenson admitted to raping the toddler with objects in the past. Can someone pick my jaw up off the floor? Why would he say this? it doesnt help anything. Is he trying to distance himself from the sexual aspect of this crime, which is basically 90% of it?Stephenson suggested that the previous assaults could account for the girl's severe injuries, but he angrily insisted that his actions were not sexually motivated, Slowik testified.

"They" say that rape is not sexually motivated; it's power and anger. So this guy is just being consistent. He was exerting his power over the baby, angry about her very existence. And, like so many of these freaks, took it out on her any way he could. I can think of many of these stories involving boys where the abuser also battered them sexually. Since it involves the genitals, it's sexual in my book. It's also no excuse. Is he trying to distance himself from the sexual aspect of this crime, which is basically 90% of it?

I can usually place myself into a clinical mindset before reading some of these more atrocious cases but....Christ. I had to look away a few times and take some deep breaths before reading further. I also caught myself clenching my jaw in anger and horror as I read some of the details of his savagery.
The part where he giggled as he described sexually assaulting her with objects made me break out in a cold sweat. He really needs to die a horrific death, something protracted and extremely painful.

WTF???
Yes, Vlad his ass, sadly they keep these sex offenders together and dont usually let them around other prisoners, someone I know who has been to prison says there is a "rule" among the inmates, when you first get there, you have 30 days to come up with your papers, court papers that show what you did, if you dont come up with them in 30 days they fuck you up anyways because most people have their court papers immediately and if you dont have them they believe you are full of shit...Slowik also testified that Stephenson admitted to raping the toddler with objects in the past. The detective said Stephenson giggled when he described how he forced an object into the girl in order to keep her awake all night long.

He's denying he raped her, but admits that he put things inside her to keep her awake at night. He's trying to claim that he did it to be cruel, not sexual.

That's an interesting point to debate.
I believe you are/"they" are correct to a point about rape being about power. But a baby?... Seriously..? You have to rape her to obtain a position of control or power? I need that explained how it is not sexual and is a power play. You are right if you are saying he is being consistent to distance himself from the sexual angle and just make him a plain ol' DV type of guy. That sounds better in prison. It's sexual in my book too.
TBH, I have a hard time imagining how rape is anything but a sexual control issue. There is no way you can separate yourself from the sex angle. Being a guy I know you can perform only if you are thinking about sex. It is practically impossible in anger and other mad distractions. No way it can be compared to sticking your finger in a womans nose to teach her a lesson.

I hope he gets the max. 15 minutes to deliberate that's impressive. No doubt he did it.
I'm glad the little girl and her brother are okay and thriving. Thank God for that. He is a sick fuck who directed his anger at a small child. He was mad at the mother for having a baby either during the relationship or during a temporary split (since the older child is his child with her) and took it out on a toddler. What a fucking coward. If it bothered you so bad why did you get back/stay with the mother. If you couldn't live with what the mother done then why torture the child.
It's bullshit to claim he wasn't sexually motivated. I'm sorry you diddle a child you were trying to get off. After seeing his facebook post he has a small dick and was trying to gratify himself since a normal woman felt loose to him. Sick mother fucker. I hate baby rapers. I'm hoping he gets life and never steps foot on the streets again. I can attest as many mother's can that a slight tear in the periunum is painful.....4th degree tearing holy shit! That child was in agony. The worst part is the healing of that area even after corrected is incredibly uncomfortable. That poor baby couldn't have understood what or why all that has happened to her. I think she may not have it fresh on the brain at all times but she will carry this with her. Only time will tell to what extent this little girl has been tramatized.
I too wonder about the mother. She doesn't have custody of the kids. She must have known about previous abuse and did nothing. I wonder what's up with all that.

I think he said it wasn't sexual out of fear. Maybe if they got him on a charge other than sexual assault he felt he might have a fighting chance in prison (i.e. Bubba)?
And as far as what I've read over the years with sexual assault; if that baby was harmed several times through penetration she may not remember it, but her body will. Body memories have a strong chance of coming back to her at some point (30's seem to be the trigger age) & because she was most likely pre-verbal, as an adult she will have a difficult time placing her emotions. You can't say "sad" if you didn't know the word when you were hurt, know what I mean? :(
Ugh.

Did some research on body memory and here are some excerpts from a really good article I found (Link posted below to full article)This little girl will probably always have issues with relationships even if she does not recall the actual attack. Her body knows of the danger and many things can trigger the body to remember what she doesn't. How confusing will that be to her when she has normal adult experiences and reacts abnormally. How odd it would be to not understand why you are reacting the way you do. Fearing things that should not be associated with fear. These child abusers fuck these kids up so bad even if they don't remember. That pissed me off to no end. Nobody has the right to screw somebody up for life.
When we over-react to mildly stressful or even innocuous situations without knowing why, this might be the result of implicit, traumatic memories dating back to childhood or infancy.
Many individuals have been able to retrieve traumatic memories, both from adult and infant experiences, when induced by strong emotions associated with the original experience. Many have remembered how it felt to be a baby, howling for a mother who would not come. In reconstructing a particular body posture, or talking about a similar emotionally charged event, the contextual memories of unbearable longing, rage or terror come back into focus. It is equally possible for sweet, joyous memories of a parents’ loving face to resurface. This phenomenon is called ‘state-dependent memory retrieval’, and while it is not essential, it can bring healing under certain conditions. But even if not consciously remembered, early memories show themselves indirectly through behaviour. It is intrinsically human to re-enact defensive reactions to forgotten traumas, though our reactions are no longer relevant. Often early memories become evident through persistent feelings that don’t seem to relate to a present situation, or through bodily sensations that don’t seem to make any sense. More commonly, these early memories of emotional pain or hurt are indirectly evident through persistent difficulties in relationships, particularly in intimate relations.
Implicit memory - or body memory - explains why, for instance, a woman who was molested as a child remains fearful of intimacy - at least with men that ‘remind’ her of the perpetrator – even without a trace of conscious memory of the traumatic episodes. A man fears being alone because it triggers an emotional memory of terror as he cried in the crib, and no-one came to comfort him. He has no recollection of the event, and all around him find him likeable and congenial. He has no understanding about his compulsive avoidance of solitude. Though successful and functional, many people can be avoidant, clingy, or perhaps insensitive in relationships. These are just some of the problems of relationship that have their roots in hurts we felt at the advent of life. To some extent, most of us suffer from some behavioural manifestations of painful implicit memories. ]
The article has a lot of info on how early life interactions have long term effects.
