So, firefighters go on a call and end up finding a baby in a suitcase. It probably would have gone out with the trash that night, had they not noticed the smell. An arrest has been made. No word yet on how old the baby is, just that it was dressed with a diaper and pink blanket. WTF is with people??? More info is at the link above.

The suitcase was outside on the street and the fire was a kitchen fire, so they were likely unrelated. I just read that part. I have read different things in different articles. I also just read a fireman "tripped" over the suitcase. ugh.

The Erie County Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy today on a baby found dead inside a black luggage bag Tuesday afternoon along East Eighth Street.

Fire crews called to a home at 745 E. Eighth St. at about 4:16 p.m. for a kitchen fire noticed the black bag and a terrible stench.

They opened the bag and saw a baby in a diaper. They closed the bag and called police.

Erie County Deputy Coroner Dennis Suscheck briefly examined the baby in front of the residence at 745 E. Eighth St. Tuesday afternoon and said he could not immediately determine a gender, race or age because of the extent of decomposition.

Suscheck said he believed the baby had been in the suitcase for several days.

A pink blanket was found inside the bag with the child.

The suitcase was found on the road next to the driveway entrance at 745 E. Eighth St.

Neighbors said they noticed the black suitcase stacked with garbage in the 700 block of East Eighth Street Monday afternoon. They said it was washed east down the street -- about 100 feet -- by Monday night's heavy rains.

Police said they believe residents in the house at 745 E. Eighth St. have nothing to do with the baby or the bag.

"It's heartbreaking, especially the way it happened,'' said Monica Gales, 35, who lives at 745 E. Eighth St. "I know I'm not going to be able to sleep.''

Gales said she called the fire department to report a grease fire on her stove.

"They got here and went to work, and had the fire out in a couple minutes,'' Gales said.

"As they were coming out, one of the firefighters tripped over the bag, and then he looked in it and you could tell by his expression it was something scary and that it wasn't supposed to be there,'' she said.

Police cordoned off a stretch of the street from 745 E. Eighth St. toward 731 E. Eighth St. for about two hours.

Several uniformed police officers and a couple detectives interviewed neighbors. The baby and luggage bag were removed from the scene at about 6 p.m.

Tania R. Coleman, 20, of 729 E. Eighth St., was charged with one felony count of endangering the welfare of children and was placed in the Erie County Prison on $15,000 bond. More charges could be filed against her based on the results of the ongoing police investigation and the autopsy on the 14-month-old girl, Franklin said.

(She lived a few houses down from the fire.)

Nutritional neglect kind of smacks of a medical issue to me. Perhaps the child had specific medical issues that required a feeding tube, avoidance of foods, inclusion of foods, etc. I guess we'll see when it all shakes out in court. Nonetheless, to cause your kid to die, stuff her in a suitcase and then put her out on the curb as trash????!!!! Outrageous. Perhaps the house fire was really just Karma chiming in.

The baby is the youngest of her other children 2 and 3 and one on the way, but the bf is not the father to baby Alayja....so did she have an affair?? would tell why she'd neglect the child as she was unwanted. "nutritional neglect" sounds like more than just failing to meet the basic needs of life for baby but meds, treatment, etc. Would leave Alayja even more so meek and helpless...breaks my heart.

I hope they crucify their ass to the wall by the law and then some.

Police: Mother said 14-month-old girl dead for month

The mother of a 14-month-old child found dead on the Erie's east side Tuesday afternoon told police that the girl had been dead for about a month, according to court documents filed with a search warrant for the woman's home.

Police filed the affidavit when they obtained the search warrant for 20-year-old Tania R. Coleman's upstairs apartment at 729 E. Eighth St. on Wednesday. Police said they were looking for trace evidence to include blood, hair and fibers, as well as other items, including air fresheners, rubber gloves, suitcases and shovels.

Police said they interviewed Coleman on Tuesday night at the Erie police station. She told detectives that the child lived with her at the residence, and had died there about one month ago.

I couldn't live with myself knowing that my dead child is in a suitcase in my house!

"She looked like a regular, normal baby to me. I saw nothing wrong," Jeffrey Coleman said this afternoon during a telephone interview from North Carolina. He is serving on active duty in the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Bragg.

"I'm not defending her, but so many people are quick to judge and point a finger," Jeffrey Coleman, 27, said today. "It's not my place to judge. It's my place to stand by my sister, whether she did this or not."

I was watching the news this morning & they had a brief update. They said that the boyfriend started to dig a grave in the back yard, but the ground got to hard. He was planing to case the baby in cement & than bury her. Since the ground got to hard, they put the baby in the suit case. They had the suit with the baby in it, in the house for a while, but the smell had gotten to bad, so they put the suit case outside.

I had a PM from one of D'D-er's who lives in Erie as well, they thought the same thing that I did. This doesn't happen here Erie, this is something that we read about on here. No, we don't live in some little town where nothing ever happens. But, I think this is a first for a dead baby to be found in a suit case. I guess my point is, the world is sick no matter where you live. Don't ever read something & think that it couldn't happen in your town.

Annnd... I don't know if this was mentioned anywhere - They stated on the news that the baby has been deceased upwards of a MONTH at this point. The coroner said due to the condition of the body, he might not be able to determine an accurate timeline for death. Didn't anyone notice she was missing? WTF. I am SO shaking my head. And the hard ground for digging...??? RAIN MUCH??? WHAT the hell is he talking about??? Dumbasses.

@WhatThe I was thinking the same thing! How the fuck is the ground hard when there has been nothing but rain & fairly warm temps! It's just another case of being lazy. The bastards could starve this poor child, but were so fucking lazy that they just put her in a suit case & put her out like trash. I swear, this shit makes my blood boil! Here's what really gets me: You KNOW she was getting at least $400 a month in food stamps, so why was it so hard to feed that baby? It's not like they couldn't buy food. Unless, she was selling them. But, here's another thought, The first two kids are the bf's & the one she is carring now is his, did they starve this baby because she was not his & they wanted to get rid of her?

Also, if this poor baby has been dead for about a month, how did it go unnoticed by the other family memebers? I mean, WTF? Really?
