Lehigh mother charged in death of 5-year-old

A Lehigh woman killed a 5-year-old girl in January, authorities said Tuesday.

Wright County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Kara Crapser, 20, with first-degree murder in the January death of Mikayla Valentine, the daughter of Crapser's boyfriend, Robert Mark Valentine, 28.

The boyfriend's grandmother, Georgia Valentine, said Tuesday that Crapser was the mother of two of the four children she was raising and that - before Mikayla's death - she had not trusted that two of the children were safe in Crapser's care.

Medics found Mikayla unresponsive when they arrived at an Eagle Grove home Jan. 7. The girl was flown to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. She was pronounced dead the next day.

The Johnson County medical examiner ruled the cause of death to be "abusive head trauma." Crapser was arrested Tuesday. Additional charges may be pending, officials said.

Georgia Valentine said that her son Robert had been engaged to Crapser. She said she strongly discouraged him from marrying Crapser.

"He told me that he was going to marry Kara after this all happened, and I told him it was a mistake. ... I don't think he believed it," Valentine said. "He still to this day doesn't believe that she could have done this. He's in denial."

"Her two kids were favored over Robert's. I figured they were safer at my house than they were there," Valentine said.

Crapser was in the Wright County Jail on Tuesday on $500,000 cash-only bond. If convicted, she faces life in prison without possibility of parole.

Never dated a guy with kids cause i don't like other peoples kids. But see, I knew that. I wish more people were honest with themselves on what they can live with, and not kill the kids out of irritation at them being alive.

Robert Valentine had better be doing some real soul searching now, and considering the wisdom offered by his grandmother that he shot down more clearly.

I will never get it.The reason I left my first husband is because he raised a hand to our daughter.I was paranoid when I dated because of my kids.If my current husband had hurt one of the kids I would have been gone.I certainly would never marry a selfish bastard who murdered one of my kids.Actually,if anyone murdered one of my kids I'm not sure they'd make it to jail.They might just have a disappearing accident.

She has children of her own right? Why is it that those children (that must be toddlers) didn't drive her to the point of her killing them, and a 5 year old sweetheart did. Toddlers are still learning how to express their needs and tend to be more difficult to handle than babies and children 5-10.
She must really have hated that poor girl for something.
Maybe it was jealousy because dad loved Mikayla more, or maybe because Mikayla was so beautiful and this Bitch reminds me of Slimer from Ghostbusters.
Either way, a child is dead and the person responsible is an Evil Bitch!!!

I have always liked the idea of caring over another persons child. That's me, and understand it's not for everyone and wish more would be honest on that account. I figure it's a child displaced in many cases missing the other parent, opportunity to give some love and care willingly and freely with out costing a dime. I wish this woman would have done what was best for Mikayla by telling the father she just can't handle caring for his child what ever the reasons--can't do it.....but that would mean having to be selfless, and as we know that isn't possible if you can strike a child dead.

Crapser Gets 50 Years for Killing Child

CLARION, Iowa (AP) - A 21-year-old woman who pleaded guilty to killing a 5-year-old girl in north-central Iowa has been given 50 years in prison.

Kara Crapser had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after prosecutors lowered the charge from first-degree murder. Crapser was sentenced on Monday in Wright County District Court.

Authorities say Crapser was dating the girl's father and the child was in Crapser's care in Eagle Grove when she was found unresponsive on Jan. 7, 2011. The girl, Mikayla Valentine, was taken to a hospital in Iowa City and died there the next day.

An autopsy showed the child died of abusive head trauma.

CLARION - The father of Mikayla Valentine, a 5-year-old who died in January 2011 from what authorities called abusive head trauma, has been arrested on child abuse-related charges, according to court records.

Robert Valentine Jr., 29, of Eagle Grove, has been charged with child endangerment resulting in death and child endangerment resulting in serious injury, according to court complaints filed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

The complaints state that the alleged offenses happened on Jan. 1, 2011. Mikayla Valentine died on Jan. 8, 2011.

The charges were filed Wednesday, and Valentine made his first appearance in court that day.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Thursday in Wright County District Court.

Kara Crapser, 21, of Eagle Grove, is serving a 50-year prison sentence for her role in the child's death. She pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to prison on May 7.

During her sentencing hearing, a written statement from Robert Valentine Jr. was read.

"How low can a person be?" he wrote. "To murder a baby and not care. To take that life and make others believe your innocence and then waiting a year to confess."

"My daughter was a beautiful and innocent baby," he wrote.

Mikayla Valentine was the daughter of Robert Valentine Jr. and Michele Movall.

The girl was in Crapser's care in her home at 208 N. Wright Ave. in Eagle Grove, when she suffered the injuries that led to her death.

Emergency personnel were called to that home on Jan. 7, 2011, to treat the girl's injuries. She was later airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where she died the following day.

Investigators have said little about what happened to her. The most detailed account thus far has come from her older brother, Robert Valentine III, who wrote a victim impact statement that was read during Crapser's sentencing hearing.

When I dated my now husband My oldest was about 1 1/2. He knew that I had my son but wasn't allowed to meet him and once he did he knew full well we were a package deal and if he couldn't love my son like his own then he could hit the road. He said he could and adopted my son 2 years ago. I will never understand how a parent's thoughts on the ones they are dating can be different than what I had.
