Baby abandoned in car; police search for mother

CONWAY – Authorities were searching for a Maine woman Saturday night after finding her young child abandoned in her car at the Cranmore Mountain recreational facility in North Conway.

The car was running and the hazard lights were flashing when Conway police responded to a call at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Krista Dittmeyer, 20, of Portland is described as white; 5 feet 2, 117 pounds. Police Lt. Chris Perley said Dittmeyer's family said the late model Nissan Sentra is registered to her.

The child, who Perley said is younger than 2, was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance for evaluation, then released to other family members.

Police said Dittmeyer has associates in the Conway area and ties to the Bridgton and Portland, Maine, area. She last contacted her family about 8 p.m. on Friday.

Perley said Dittmeyer did not have a record, nor a history of mental illness.

Any time a child is separated from his or her mother, there is reason for concern, Perley said.

NH Police Say Missing Maine Mom Was Crime Victim

CONWAY, N.H. -- Police say they believe a Maine woman whose car and infant daughter were abandoned in a New Hampshire parking lot is the victim of a crime.

He said there is nothing to indicate that Dittmeyer voluntarily left behind the car and child, who was found in the car.

Search Warrants To Be Executed In Missing Mother Investigation
Police Believe Krista Dittmeyer Is Victim Of Crime

CONWAY, N.H. -- Police continued their investigation Monday into the disappearance of 20-year-old Krista Dittmeyer, whose infant daughter was found in a running car in a North Conway parking Saturday morning.

Police said they are investigating the Saturday disappearance as a crime. They planned to execute two search warrants on Monday. One will be on the car, and they wouldn't comment on the second.
Dittmeyer's car was found with its engine running and hazard lights flashing in the Cranmore Mountain ski area parking lot. Police said it had been in the parking lot for several hours before it was discovered.

"She would never, ever, ever, leave her in a car by herself," said Dittmeyer's friend Kathy Pratt. "We know that she would do whatever it takes to get back here and be with her daughter."

Dittmeyer's sister, Kayla, said she believes Krista persuaded the person who forced her from her vehicle to leave the child behind.

"Just please let us know you're safe. We need you. Your daughter needs you," Kayla Dittmeyer said on "Good Morning America."

Detectives said Dittmeyer, of Portland, last spoke with family members by phone at about 8 p.m. Friday.

Police said they had no reason to believe Dittmeyer would harm herself. They said they believe Dittmeyer was forced from the car.

"Nothing in this investigation has suggested that she was suicidal, suffers from a debilitating mental illness or would have voluntarily wanted to absent herself from the vehicle or the child," said Lt. Chris Perley.

Dittmeyer's family said she has friends in the area, but police aren't saying who she was coming to visit, although they did say her acquaintances are cooperating in the investigation.

Missing Maine mom similar to TV episode plot

CONWAY, N.H. -- Police are now getting help from the FBI in their search for a missing Maine mother in New Hampshire and some believe her disappearance has a bizarre similarity to a TV episode.

Three FBI agents have joined Conway Police searching for 20-year-old Krista Dittmeyer.

It has also been released that the father of Dittmeyer’s daughter is currently in prison. According to reports, the father of Dittmeyer’s child is a convicted drug dealer and is serving four years in Maine.

One police lieutenant said a number of people have mentioned the similarity of this case to a recent episode of “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.” On the episode - which was based in Manchester, N.H. - mothers were abducted, but the babies were found unharmed.

The body of a missing Maine mother was found Wednesday, several days after her toddler daughter was abandoned in an idling car near a New Hampshire ski resort.


The body of Krista Dittmeyer, 20, was found in a pond near the Cranmore Mountain ski resort parking lot where police Saturday found Dittmeyer's car running with the hazard lights flashing, according to Assistant Attorney General Jane Young.

"She was located in what is known as Duck Pond. We are treating this as a suspicious death," Young said.

Young did not disclose the manner or cause of Dittmeyer's death, but said an autopsy would be conducted on Thursday

Kyle Acker, the girl's father and Dittmeyer's boyfriend, is currently in prison.
Two men, including Acker's brother, were stopped by police in the woods near the ski resort the day before her body was found.
Richard Acker and Corey Poland were stopped at about 11:52 p.m. Tuesday. Poland was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Kyle Acker is the boyfriend of Krista Dittmeyer.
Police said the men told them they were Dittmeyer's friends and were in the area to look for her. They also said they found a flip-flop Dittmeyer was reportedly wearing when she disappeared last week. They told police they left the shoe where they found it.
A memorial vigil for Dittmeyer is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Thursday at Stevens Brook Elementary School in Bridgton, said an organizer, Sandy Pasquale. A candle lighting is set for 8:30 p.m.

Dittmeyer, a 20-year-old Portland resident, was found dead Wednesday in a pond in North Conway, N.H., a couple of hundred yards from where her 14-month-old daughter had been found alone in Dittmeyer's idling car on the morning of April 23.

"The deputy medical examiner has indicated the cause and manner of death are pending return of the toxicology results and further investigation," Senior Assistant Attorney General Jane Young said.

The cause of death refers to what killed the person and the manner refers to how they died, such as homicide, suicide or accident.

In some cases, medical examiners request blood tests when there are no injuries to a body or the injuries don't appear to have been fatal. The presence or absence of alcohol, drugs or other toxins may be important in determining what caused someone to die.

Authorities may actually have a clear idea of the cause of death but withhold it for investigative reasons.

Certain details may be known only to police and people who were with Dittmeyer at or near the end of her life, and those details could be important in identifying suspects or ascertaining the reliability of leads.

For instance, when Jeffery Gorman murdered Amy St. Laurent of South Berwick in 2001, he told his mother how he had killed her before anyone except investigators knew how she died. That information was particularly helpful in convicting him.

Dittmeyer's boyfriend, Kyle Acker, the father of her child, is in prison for drug trafficking. He was arrested last summer when police found 15 grams of cocaine and more than 2 ounces of marijuana and a loaded pistol at the apartment he shared with Dittmeyer in South Portland.

The couple lived together in Conway in 2009. Court records show that Acker had misdemeanor arrests in Carroll County, where Conway is, but none that were drug-related.

Young said police are still urging people who have any information that might pertain to Dittmeyer's movements the night before her car was found, or early that morning, to contact authorities. People can call Conway police at (603) 356-5715 or New Hampshire State Police at (603) 271-3636, or anonymously send a tip by texting "GOTCHA" plus the message to 274637 (CRIMES).

Young said New Hampshire authorities are working closely with Maine police agencies. The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has been assisting police since Monday and took the lead in the investigation Wednesday, when Dittmeyer's body was found.

Young would not comment on the reliability of earlier statements by police that investigators did not believe Dittmeyer, a Bridgton native, left the area on her own or harmed herself.

"Those statements may have been made before we became the lead agency," she said.

Young said police are withholding details, such as evidence that might have been found in Dittmeyer's car or whether another vehicle was searched, to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

I had hoped when I first read the story as it was breaking that she'd be found and at the very least someone took her to scare the b/f. Now I can't shake the bad vibes that come from the fact the brother just HAPPENED to be in the area near where she disappeared and was later found.

3 Arrested In Connection With NH Death Of Mother

Twenty-eight-year-old Anthony Papile of Ossipee has been charged with second degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Krista Dittmeyer, whose body was found in a Conway pond on April 27.

The Portland, Maine, woman was last seen on April 23. Her daughter was found unharmed the next day in a car in the parking lot of the Cranmore Mountain ski area.

Twenty-three-year-old Trevor Ferguson of Tamworth and 28-year-old Michael Petelis of Ossipee have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

The three are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Ossipee.

Court documents indicate that a Portland mother whose body was found in a New Hampshire pond late last month as her young daughter sat in her running car was the victim of a plot to steal drugs and money.

That's according to WBZ-TV, which says the documents indicate that Krista Dittmeyer, 20, went to the Ossippee, NH, apartment of Michael Petelis, 28. As Dittmeyer was walking up the stairs, Anthony Papile, 28, hit her in the head with a rubber club.

Papile and Petelis then bound Dittmeyer in duct tape and put her in the trunk of her car; they then drove to the Cranmore Mountain ski area, where they dumped Dittmeyer in a snow pond, according to documents cited by the station. The documents indicate that Dittmeyer suffocated or drowned, according to the Associated Press

Krista Dittmeyer Murder: Anthony Papile To Plead Guilty In Maine Mom's Death

Police say Krista Dittmeyer was a 20-year-old drug dealing mom who was lured to her death by three men out to steal her stash.

Now, 13 months after her death, one of those men has agreed to plead to charges in her killing.

"I've asked all of her friends, and they tell me the same thing," Shackley said. "They don't know who would want to do something to hurt her."

Unbeknownst to Shackley, though, there were people who wanted something from her daughter, police are now saying.

Dittmeyer was living with her boyfriend, Aliyah's father, when he was arrested for cocaine trafficking in 2010, and he was still behind bars at the time of her death. It appears Dittmeyer had turned to similar work in his absence, in a move that ultimately led to her death.
Much like Mary Louise Parker's character Nancy Botwin on "Weeds," the young mother had turned to the world of drugs and was killed as part of an attempt to rob her, the Daily Mail reported.

Well she set herself up for something bad to happen. Now, I don't mean to sound brash and insensitive, just pisses me off she'd involve herself this way and put not only herself but her baby in harms way. LUCKY her baby was found alive.
