They may not want to drag the children through a trial, it's cheaper with a plea bargain, and it takes less time, so they offered him a lesser charge to keep things simple. Life without parole for 107 charges sounds about right. Anyone who was guilty would take the 5 years because they don't want life, and the procecution knows that it would be easy ta get a plea if it was something the guilty could live with.

A McIntosh County jury needed only 65 minutes Friday to convict a 44-year-old rural Eufaula man of sexually abusing a young girl for seven years.

Steven Bigham was convicted of first-degree rape of a person younger than 14; first-degree sodomy of a person younger than 16; rape by instrumentation of a person younger than 14 and intimidation of a witness.

The jury recommended sentences totaling 445 years in prison plus a fine of $40,000.

Bigham must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

First Assistant District Attorney Carol Iski said he used the victim as a "sex toy."

When the child was 5, Bigham began assaulting her sexually three or four times a week and continued the assaults until she was 12, when she reported him to Eufaula school officials and to the police in April 2011, Iski said.

The girl, now 14 and living in another state, was a key witness against Bigham.

"I hope this will send a message to any victims who are afraid to come forward for fear no one will believe them," Iski said. "People will believe you."

“It began when the girl was 5 years old,” Rittenhouse said. “And lasted seven years. She testified he made her have sex with him three times a week the whole time. Just horrible.”

Rittenhouse said Bigham told the girl, who is now 14 years old, if she told anyone about the rapes, he would kill her.

“He said he’d throw her body in a well, and pour lye on her so no one would ever find her,” Rittenhouse said. “Just imagine living through something like that for seven years.”

Rittenhouse said jurors requested Bigham be sentenced to:

• 365 years for first-degree rape;

• 20 years for sodomy;

• 50 years for rape by instrumentation; and

• 10 years for intimidation of a witness.

Multiple counts were dropped, Rittenhouse said, to simplify the trial. Testimony began Monday.

“It took us five days to try four counts,” Rittenhouse said.

Formal sentencing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 18.

I promised to update this thread when charges were dropped or if other information was available. I did that. When I checked on it last week, I was HORRIFIED to see that all but 4 charges were dropped. I was so glad to finally see the news article explaining why they were dropped and that the sentence for this asshat was such that the dropped charges would not have mattered.

A Checotah man was sentenced to more than 400 years in prison for raping his stepdaughter.

Steven Bigham was convicted of first-degree rape, rape by instrumentation, sodomy and intimidation of a witness.

During his trial, police testified Bigham raped his stepdaughter three times a week for seven years from the time she was 5 years old.

According to court documents, Bigham would lock the girl's mother and two brothers in a bedroom at night so he wouldn't be interrupted.

While on the stand, the victim was asked if Bigham had any identifying marks. Both she and her mother said he didn't.

Bigham was later called to testify, saying he had a tattoo of a smiley face on his penis. He also provided photographs.

Bigham said his last tattoo was 20 years old.

In response, the district attorney showed evidence that Bigham was caught with a tattoo gun while he was in detention and he acquired 16 new tattoos during that time.
