Kenia Monge Disappears From Nightclub, Cops Say Scenario 'Nightmare' *found deceased*

I dont see this ending well, reminds me of the beautiful girl in New York City couple years ago the bouncer killed

Police say they are "very concerned" about the safety of a 19-year-old woman who went to a Denver nightclub with friends and mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind her purse and cell phone but few clues.

Kenia Monge, a recent high school graduate, went to the 24K Lounge, a downtown Denver hot spot Saturday night, where a group of underage friends had been drinking. Her friends told police that she excused herself from the table to go to the restroom and never returned.

Monge was last seen several hours later at a Conoco gas station a few miles from the club at 3 a.m. Sunday, according to the Denver Police Department.

Police say the case is not a typical missing person investigation. Officials from the Denver Police Department have called in the FBI and Center for Missing and Exploited Children to help in the investigation, an indication that they do not believe Monge simply ran away.
We get lots of missing cases," said Denver Police spokesman Lt. Matthew Murray. "No one thinks this girl ran away. We have reason to believe that what took place is not good. We are very concerned."

For the family, he added, "this is a nightmare scenario."
As the first week following Monge's disappearance comes to a close, Murray said they're treating it as a missing person case but said "there is something different" about it. He would not say what made it so strange.

Monge's stepfather, Tony Lee, told ABC affiliate KMGH that a "good Samaritan" came forward and told police that he picked up the girl and was with her at the gas station early Sunday morning where she met and left with another man.

Police would not confirm that detail, or where the "good Samaritan" had found Monge to give her a ride, but Murray told ABCNews.com they were "talking with several key witnesses. We're working every lead."
[...]
Monge is 4 feet, 11 inches tall, and weighs 90 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black skirt, black blouse and high-heel boots.

Friday police found a body in a suburban Denver park, but Murray said it was not Monge, nor did it have anything to do with her case.

Missing Colo. woman's mother awaits word in case
DENVER — The mother of a 19-year-old woman who went missing from a downtown Denver nightclub a week ago anxiously awaited word about her daughter's whereabouts Friday as police said they were making the disappearance its top priority.

Kenia Monge (mon-hey') was seen at the 24K Lounge the night of March 31 and again at a gas station about two miles away at 3 a.m. on April 1, authorities said. KMGH-TV reported she left her purse and cellphone at the club.

Johnny Coast, the operations manager of the 24K Lounge, told KDVR-TV that Monge danced with a man for hours on March 31 and that staffers saw them leave together through a back door. Police spokesman Matt Murray declined to confirm that report, and wouldn't say whether the man had been interviewed. Coast did not return a message left by The Associated Press.

Monge's tearful mother, Maria Lee, spoke to a reporter at her home in suburban Aurora, saying Friday marked the eighth day since friends and family had spoken to Monge. She described her daughter as very sweet and friendly.

"I feel like they took my baby daughter, my heart, my soul, my everything," Lee said. "I feel like just running out of this house to go look for her, to find her. I'm so tired."

Officers don't know if Monge was the victim of a crime or if she deliberately dropped from sight, Murray said. Dozens of officers were conducting interviews and searching for clues both in and outside of Denver, and officers were scheduled to work on the case through the weekend, he said.

"Anybody who has been missing for as long as she's had, you would suspect they'd be in danger," Murray said. "With no contact with any of her friends and family, we have to be concerned."

The FBI Safe Streets Task Force and experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children were helping with the investigation.

This photo provided by the Denver Police Department shows Kenia Monge, 19, of Aurora, Colo., who went missing at the 24K Lounge in the area of 14th and Market Streets in downtown Denver last Friday. Police say Monge is 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 115 pounds. She was wearing a black skirt, black jacket and red high-heeled shoes. Police spokesman Matt Murray said Thursday, April 7, 2011, the disappearance of Kenia Monge is not a standard missing-person case. He wouldn't give details, saying the investigation is continuing. He says the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are helping with the investigation

Such a tiny little thing. I hope they find her and she's ok, but it doesn't sound too good. Her family has to be just devastated.

Yeah thing is I am close to her size
I have an inch on her and if shes 115 then shes got about 10 lbs on me(says shes 4'11" and 90 lbs in one report and 115 in another,I am 5 foot nothing and 104)
And for some stupid caveman mentality men like to literally pick up small girls over the shoulder or whatever
So I know I have been picked up tossed over shoulders and carried outta places by hubby, friends etc
This girl being small also wouldnt stand a chance of a guy just grabbing her and carrying her off
Its so easy to do with "midgets" or puny girls

Boyfriend of missing Aurora teen not hopeful

DENVER -- Laith Essmaeil says his relationship with Kenia Monge was like many others. Typical date nights involved movies and dining out.

But it all came to an abrupt end on the morning of Friday, April 1 when Essmaeil says his live-in girlfriend of 6 months failed to return home from a night of partying with friends in lower downtown Denver.

“This is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through,” Essmaeil told us. “It’s overwhelming. It’s a lot to deal with. Anybody missing is just too much.”

The last confirmed sighting of Monge, 19, was at a Conoco gas station at Speer Blvd. and Pennsylvania Street - roughly two hours after she abandoned her friends at the 24K Lounge at Larimer Square, leaving through the back door with a man who she had been dancing with, a nightclub spokesperson said.

Denver Police have labeled the case as their "top priority" and continue to interview friends, family members, witnesses and downtown business owners in hopes of locating Monge, a recent Cherry Creek High School graduate.

While investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Monge is still alive, their search has included the banks of Cherry Creek, adjacent to the Conoco, and at least one landfill.

She is a very pretty, very tiny little lady. I'm sure this isn't going to end well.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. This article was written April 14, 2011:

The whole scene didn't look right to Travis Forbes.

There was an attractive young woman across the street from a nightclub called the 24K Lounge. It was 2:30 a.m. April 1, and she was talking to a homeless man. Forbes talked with her, thought she was clearly drunk, and said he offered her a ride.

She eagerly jumped into his van.

"She was really emotional, really upset," Forbes said. The young woman was Kenia Monge, 19, who friends say vanished from a nightclub about 1 that morning.

But Forbes says he doesn't know what happened to Monge. He planned to give her a ride home but said he ultimately dropped her at a gas station when she asked to stop for cigarettes. Last time he saw her, she was walking away with another man as he drove away, Forbes said.

Forbes, 31, who said he got Monge's cellphone number from her that night, tried to call her later that morning. Then, he texted her to see if she was OK but never got a response.

Forbes, who spoke with The Denver Post a few days after Monge went missing, is the last person known to authorities to have seen her before she disappeared.

Forbes said he was out that night celebrating his sister's birthday downtown with his friend Eddie. On their way home, he spotted Monge wearing a hoodie and miniskirt.

When they approached her, Monge immediately wrapped her arms around theirs, he said. She had a thick accent. Monge was upset after splitting up with her boyfriend, Forbes said.

"She really didn't want to go home because she didn't want her dad to see her like this," Forbes said.

Forbes said he dropped his friend off at his house and was heading to Aurora when Monge saw a Conoco station at Speer Boulevard and Pennsylvania Street and said she needed a cigarette. When they got to the station, it was closed. Monge started crying again.

Forbes started to drive away when Monge spotted a man walking down the street smoking a cigarette. She asked Forbes to stop and, he said, she jumped out and ran over to the man, immediately putting her arm on his.

Forbes, who has a criminal record for assault, trespassing and theft, got back in his van and drove away as Monge and the stranger were walking together down the street, he said.

Denver police Lt. Matt Murray said detectives have interviewed Forbes as part of their investigation of Monge's disappearance.

Why would this guys say she didn't want her Dad to see her in like that if she lived with her boyfriend? Someone needs to talk to this guy a bit further.

Denver man arrested in Austin
Police say he's a suspect in a missing-woman case

AUSTIN (KXAN) - A Colorado man arrested in Austin on an an out-of-state warrant auto theft warrant is also a suspect in the case of a missing girl from Aurora, Colo, authorities said

Police in Denver said Travis Forbes, 31, was the last person to see missing 19-year-old Kenia Monge. Witnesses said Monge left a Denver bar after partying with friends.

"Being the last person so far to have seen her, my life has been turned inside out," Forbes said in an interview with KXAN’s sister station, KUSA in Denver. "I have a criminal record, so it's been very difficult. The detectives in this case are going through my life with a fine-toothed comb."

Forbes was arrested on the auto theft warrant, which was issued in April, from an address near the University of Texas campus on Kern Ramble Street.

In the interview, Forbes said he was driving home from a bar in Denver after a graduation celebration with friends from a cosmetology school when he noticed Monge who appeared drunk. Forbes said she was stumbling and crying.

"She was very inebriated and emotional and I was just trying to figure out where she had come from, who her friends were," Forbes said. "When we found her at 2:30 in the morning, she was drunk."

Forbes said a friend he called "Eddie" was with him in his van but walked home while he drove Monge to a bar. There, she told him she left her car and her friends. When they couldn’t find either Forbes said he let Monge use his cell phone to call friends who didn’t answer.

After offering to take her home Forbes said she wanted to get cigarettes. They stopped at a gas station but it was closed. Police say that is the last place Monge was seen.

Forbes told KUSA that Monge wanted a cigarette so badly; she jumped out of his van to bum one form a man who was at the gas station smoking a cigarette.

"They sat down, smoked cigarettes and all of a sudden, I was no longer important. I was just one stranger and then she was off with another stranger," Forbes said. "I didn't think anything of it. I didn't get any bad vibes from this person. He was clean cut. He wasn't homeless."

Forbes said the man was Asian; 5 feet 4 inches tall, thin, small build, round, boyish face and nice looking. He said the man was wearing jeans, basketball shoes, a silver jacket and spoke fluent Spanish with Monge.

"She walked off with him. There was no reason for me to have thought anything about it. And it was 3 in the morning. So I went home," Forbes said.

The next morning, Forbes says he texted Monge to see if she ever found her car. He says he never heard back from her.

Travis Forbes arrested for attempted murder, sex assault

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Travis Forbes, the self-described ‘suspect’ in the disappearance of an Aurora teenager, has been arrested in Fort Collins for allegedly assaulting a woman inside her apartment, and then setting the apartment on fire.

Forbes, 32, was taken into custody on July 10 for investigation of attempted first degree murder, sex assault, assault, arson and aggravated motor vehicle theft, officials confirmed.
According to Fort Collins Police spokeswoman Rita Davis, Forbes physically assaulted a 30-year-old woman inside her apartment at 1202 Pomona St. on July 5, just six days after he was released from jail in Jefferson County after unrelated motor vehicle theft charges were dropped.

The victim “jumped from a second-story bedroom window during a fire that investigators determined was intentionally set by the suspect,” said Davis.

“Forbes emerged as a person of interest in the investigation when officials learned late last week of his presence in the Fort Collins area.
[...]
Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the Fort Collins case does not appear to be related to the still-unsolved case of Kenia Monge, 19, who disappeared April 1 after abandoning friends at a lower downtown Denver nightclub.

Forbes admits he gave an “intoxicated” Monge a ride to a Denver gas station where -he claims- she left with another man.

Later that day, Forbes was caught on camera wheeling in a large cooler wrapped in duct tape into the bakery he leased. The video also shows Forbes shutting off the surveillance system, while wearing latex gloves up to his elbows.

A nearby business owner reported seeing someone who matched Forbes description burning something in a 55 gallon barrel behind the bakery.

Goodness, that guy gives me the creeps. Definitely doesn't look good. So bizarre though, seems everyone has differing versions of how she left the bar. Why would she leave w/o her purse and everything and jump in a car w/ a stranger? So strange.

My cousin does this shit on a regular basis. I'm waiting for the call in the middle of the night telling me she's dead.

Meh..I suppose I've done some pretty stupid shit when drunk...including but not limited to trusting strangers!

I was more concerned about the leaving her stuff behind though. It sounds like although there are differing accounts, the basic consensus is that she left of her own volition w/o any of her stuff...I can honestly say I've never been drunk enough to leave my purse at the bar. (Phone of course, but definitely not purse). It's all just so weird!
But I'm 99% sure that weirdo had something to do w/ it...

The remains of a beautiful teenager who went missing on a night out have been found in a field.

19-year-old Kenia Monge disappeared on March 31 from a nightclub in downtown Denver, leaving her purse and mobile phone at the club.

Prosecutors say 31-year-old Travis Forbes picked her up and later killed her. Forbes has now been charged with her first degree murder.

On Wednesday the white van driver physically led investigators to the buried body, in a field near Keenesburg, about 40 miles from Denver.

Forbes has confessed to the murder of Kenia Monge and is cooperating with police, 9News reported.

He allegedly told investigators that he and Kenia had fought and he killed her.

Denver police first questioned the bakery driver in April, but hadn't called him a suspect until this week.

Forbes, who is in jail on unrelated charges, has previously denied any connection to Monge's disappearance.
[..]

Police have now searched Forbes' van and seized several items, including a large cooler from the bakery where he worked, the newspaper reported.

He was arrested in July after police said he sexually assaulted and tried to kill a woman before setting her home on fire.

For five months, Maria and Tony Lee clung to hope despite the odds. Now, they seek solace with the news that their daughter’s remains have finally been found.

“Me, personally, I kind of knew it would come to this,” Tony Lee told FOX31 reporter Heidi Hemmat Thursday in the couple’s first television interview since Kenia Monge’s body was unearthed in a field along Interstate 76 in northeastern Colorado.

“I tried to prepare myself for it, but there’s no preparation. You can’t prepare yourself for the events of the last 24 hours. Ever.”
[...]

“One thing that we’ve got now is the closure,” said Tony Lee. “That’s all we’ve been wanting.”

The Lees say they are now preparing emotionally for the next chapter in their lives: laying their daughter to rest.

The justice system, they say, will follow.

“Justice must be served...and we’ve got to go through that,” said Tony Lee. “We’re a prisoner of this for the foreseeable future.”

Police investigating the disappearance of 19-year-old Kenia Monge searched a computer at Travis Forbes' workplace and found he had visited multiple websites for women who had been reported missing.

Monica Poole, who rented space to Forbes at Deby's Bakery and Cafe in Aurora for his granola-bar business and is a witness in the Monge case, said Forbes often spent the night in her office, scanning the Internet.
[...]

When detectives found the missing-person sites on her computer, Poole said, they began investigating whether Forbes was involved in the disappearance of any of those women.
[...]

DA spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough and Denver police spokesman John White both declined Friday to comment about whether Forbes has confessed to any murders.

Authorities have sealed an arrest-warrant affidavit in the case.
[...]

Clint Van Zandt, a former FBI behavioral profiler, said that suggests there may be more victims that can be linked to him.

"The question for law enforcement is not, 'Is he capable of murder?' but how many people he might have killed," Van Zandt told 9News on Friday.

A high-ranking Denver police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the prosecution may have entered into a deal with Forbes to not seek the death penalty in exchange for Forbes' leading them to Monge's body.

Kimbrough said that "new information" that led to Forbes' arrest for murder was developed jointly by a prosecutor and police, suggesting a deal may already have been reached, the officer said.

Forbes could possibly confess to other murders without facing any additional punishment, which could bring closure to family members, the officer said.

Forbes, who is being held in the Larimer County jail, is already facing life sentences if convicted in the Fort Collins and Monge cases.

OMG He could be a serial killer. Who knows how many of those women he's actually responsible for? Or maybe he got the idea from scouring those sites. Either way, he's one sick MFer.

I'm glad the family now has closure, but wish it could have had a happier ending. What a waste of a beautiful young life. Now, justice should be swift and deep for this one. He deserves the worst.

Travis Forbes pleads guilty in Aurora teen's murder

DENVER -- Travis Forbes, the man charged with the slaying of 19-year-old Kenia Monge, pleaded guilty to first degree murder Monday and was immediately sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Forbes, 31, was making his initial court appearance in Denver when the plea was announced.

“What happened to Kenia was a horrific, horrific crime,” Forbes said, crying throughout a prepared statement. “What I did was horrible and cowardly. It was a mistake. I didn’t plan on it. I took her away. I took a life. I will spend the rest of my days in prison and I deserve it. I’ll never make things right for the people who knew me and remember me as I was, and not the monster I became.”

Prosecutors have not yet said exactly how she died.

“If Kenia were here she would ask ‘Why?” said Tony Lee, Monge’s stepfather, in his remarks Monday. “Why you had to kill her after you got what you wanted.”

Forbes also faces charges in Fort Collins where, in July, he allegedly assaulted another woman inside her apartment and then set the apartment on fire.

He is expected to plead guilty to the attempted murder of Fort Collins woman Lydia Tillman today, a crime that carries a 48-year penalty.

Monge's stepfather, Tony Lee, said he was thankful for Forbes' change of heart but couldn't explain his motives after months of lying to authorities.

"It was by the grace of God. There's no other reason we can come up with," Lee said. "He's more or less been holding us hostage since April 1. He doesn't have that control over us anymore."

The negotiated plea means Forbes won't face the death penalty. It also spares Tillman, 30, still recovering from serious injuries, and Monge's family from years of trials.

At the sentencing portion of Monday's hearing, Lee recalled bringing a firearm to an April meeting with a trembling and teary Forbes, before he was officially a suspect in Monge's death.

Lee said he knew then that Forbes had hurt Monge, and the grieving stepfather wondered aloud in court Monday what would have happened if he hadn't kept his cool.
[...]

Monday in court, Forbes sobbed as he apologized to Monge's family.
[...]

Behind him, Forbes' parents sat listening, silently wiping away tears.

Outside the courtroom, they declined to comment other than to thank the state for providing support to Monge's family.

But Lee said that earlier that day, the couple — who declined to give reporters their names — shook his hand and apologized for their son's actions.

Now, the Monge family is focused on a new foundation dedicated to helping women avoid dangerous situations and aiding the families of victims of violent crimes.

Maybe not leaving a bar by yourself, drunk off your ass and jumping into cars with strangers would be a good way to avoid dangerous situations?

Killer's confession detailed in Kenia Monge case
WARNING: Includes Graphic Details

DENVER -- In his confession to police, Travis Forbes says he worked an entire shift delivering baked goods around the metro area with Kenia Monge’s body stuffed inside a cooler in the back of his van.
In a revealing interview with FOX31 Denver, Monge’s stepfather, Tony Lee, disclosed exclusive details of Forbes’ confession including the events leading up to, and following, his daughter’s murder.
According to Lee, Forbes told investigators he was dropping off a friend at the Loft Apartments at 15th and California St. early April 1 when he saw an intoxicated Monge talking to a homeless person on the street.
“It didn’t look right and he tried to help her,” Lee said.

Monge, 19, had mysteriously left her friends, purse and cell phone at the 24K nightclub in lower downtown earlier in the evening, so Forbes agreed to let her use his phone to call hers.
He then drove Kenia back to the bar eight blocks away to look for her car. When they couldn’t find it, he offered to take her home.

According to Lee, Forbes told police he was driving on Speer Boulevard when Kenia passed out in his van.
He pulled over at Alamo Placita Park on 3rd and Emerson and raped Kenia while she was still unconscious.

“The first sexual assault was the beginning of the end,” Lee told us.
Forbes told police he decided to rape her a second time, but she woke up and started to struggle. That’s when he says he got angry and strangled her, according to Lee.
Forbes sat next to Monge’s lifeless body for 30 minutes, and then stuffed her into a large cooler he kept in the back of his van.
That day, Forbes went to work at Deby’s Bakery in Aurora and delivered baked goods with Kenia’s body still in the back. “It makes me sick,” Lee said. “It makes anyone sick.”
At about 7:22 p.m. on April 1, Forbes says he returned to the bakery and sent a text message to Kenia’s phone asking if she got home alright in an effort to construct an alibi.

Then, he dragged the cooler inside the bakery and put it in a freezer.
Forbes told police he removed Kenia’s clothing and jewelry, and his own clothing, and washed both of their bodies with bleach.
He ripped out the carpet out from his van and put all of the items in a 55-gallon barrel behind the bakery and set it on fire.

After it was burned, he dumped it into a community dumpster that was there,” Lee said.
Forbes says he loaded the cooler into his van just after midnight on April 2 and drove to the Keenesburg, Colo. field where he used to hunt birds. He placed Kenia in a “fetal” position and buried her there.

[...]
Forbes told investigators there were two reasons why he confessed. He had lost his credit card the night he killed Kenia and thought he might have buried it with her body. He believed it was only a matter of time before he would be caught.

DENVER (AP) – A woman accused of lying during an investigation into a man who pleaded guilty to killing a Denver teen and attacking a Fort Collins woman has been charged.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said Friday that 23-year-old Kerry Humphrey has been charged with two counts of attempting to influence a public servant. She was arrested Oct. 5 and has been released on $5,000 bond

Lydia Tillman and Convicted Killer Travis Forbes
DENVER, Colo. (KTLA) -- A woman who survived a brutal attack by a man who had already killed another young woman is speaking out about the terrifying ordeal that left her in a coma for 5 weeks.

In an interview with ABC's 20/20, Lydia Tillman, reveals details of the attack and talks about her struggle to overcome the injuries she suffered in the vicious assault.

Her nightmare began innocently enough at a 4th of July fireworks show in Fort Collins.
That's where Tillman met a stranger, later identified as 31-year old Travis Forbes.

After the show Forbes returned with Tillman to her apartment, where she was sexually assaulted, strangled, beaten and left for dead.

Police say Forbes then poured bleach on her body and set the apartment on fire.

Somehow Tillman managed to escape her burning apartment by jumping from a second-story window.

But she suffered a stroke as a result of the beating she sustained, and spent 5 weeks in a coma.

Police were able to use DNA to link Forbes to the attack on Tillman and the disappearance and murder of Kenia Monge.

He was arrested in and plead guilty to both crimes.

Forbes was sentenced to 48 years in prison for the attempted murder of Tillman, on top of the life sentence handed down in the Monge murder.
[...]
Tillman's interview can be seen on Caught in the Act a 20/20 special on ABC, Friday at 9 pm ET

Killer Travis Forbes says he covers his mirror when he brushes his teeth

Travis Forbes wipes a tear during Tuesday's court hearing in Fort Collins
Kenia Monge's father, Tony Lee, has written Travis Forbes twice. He told 9NEWS he will write Forbes, the man who brutally killed his daughter, once a month for the rest of his life until he talks to him.

Forbes is serving a life sentence in prison after he admitted to killing Monge in Denver and admitting to the attempted murder of Lydia Tillman in Fort Collins. Forbes pleaded guilty to attacking Tillman and then setting her apartment on fire.

"I need to have blanks filled in," Lee said, "no matter how horrific they are."

Forbes responded to letters from 9News Reporter Anastasiya Bolton with a 16-page letter in which he expresses anger and guilt, and said he covered his mirror with paper so he doesn't have to look at himself when he brushs his teeth.

Kerry Humphrey Admits Lying to Protect Boyfriend -- and Kenia Monge's Murderer

Kerry Humphrey
On April 1, 2011, nineteen-year-old Kenia Monge disappeared -- and she remained missing until September, when Travis Forbes, who originally portrayed himself as a good Samaritan, led authorities to her body outside Keenesberg. Forbes pleaded guilty shortly thereafter -- but it wasn't until this week that his girlfriend, Kerry Humphrey, did likewise, admitting that she lied to give him an alibi.

An affidavit for Humphrey's arrest, on view below, offers the details for her falsehoods, and many of Forbes's. The document notes Monge's disappearance after a night of clubbing, as well as the discovery that her purse, cell phone and keys had been left at the venue in question, 24K.

Stored in the phone was a text message that read, "Hey this is Travis, the guy who gave you a ride last night, - white creepy van." That was followed by a smiley face symbol and the question "did you get home okay?"

After seeing that text message, Anthony Lee, Monge's father, contacted Forbes, who met with him accompanied by a pal, Edward Fajardo. At that time, Forbes offered an account of the evening that he also shared with police. He and Fajardo took a very intoxicated Monge to Club Lavish, on Market Street, to retrieve her car, he said, but they couldn't find it -- so he offered to drive her home. Before they arrived, though, they stopped at a Conoco to get cigarettes, only to discover that the station was closed. Monge then saw a man, identified only as "Dan," smoking nearby and bummed a cigarette. Shortly thereafter, he continued, Monge walked off with Dan -- and that was the last time he saw her.

The report points out that Forbes told Lee, "I wish I knew more about what happened to your daughter, but I told you everything I know" -- lines delivered with tears welling in his eyes and evident emotion in his voice.

During a subsequent interview, Forbes claimed that he'd arrived at the home of his girlfriend, Humphrey, at after 3 a.m. on April 1 and split at approximately 8:30 a.m. -- information that was confirmed by Humphrey during her own sit-down. She told a detective that she hadn't gone out with Forbes on the evening of March 31, but she saw him upon his arrival at 3:30 a.m. She recalled him saying something about a "fun night."

In addition, Humphrey parroted the story Forbes had already told officers about what had happened in his exchange with Monge.

How believable was this tale? Not very -- especially after cell phone records revealed that Forbes was nowhere close to Humphrey's home between the hours of 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. on April 1.

This information prompted another chat with Humphrey, who stuck with her previous claims -- at least until she was shown phone records noting Forbes's GPS coordinates, which proved she wasn't telling the truth.

At that point, the affidavit catalogs a change in tune, with Humphrey revealing that Forbes asked her to lie about his whereabouts that night. First he told her he'd slept in his van, which might not sound convincing to investigators searching for Monge. Later, he claimed he'd been on a "marijuana run" -- a no-no since he was on probation.

Humphrey told cops she never asked Forbes why he'd asked her to lie for him -- but she'll be living with the consequences of doing so for quite some time to come. She pleaded guilty to one count apiece of attempting to influence a public official and perjury, plus two counts of false reporting to authorities, earning 2,000 hours of community service and up to two years in Denver County Jail.

Forbes, for his part, will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Humphrey told cops she never asked Forbes why he'd asked her to lie for him
If that was the case; why this:

First he told her he'd slept in his van, which might not sound convincing to investigators searching for Monge. Later, he claimed he'd been on a "marijuana run" -- a no-no since he was on probation.
Both perfectly understandable reasons to ask her to lie, if not particularly good. She needn't actually have known she was alibi-ing him for murder.
