Woman Jumps From Bridge, Says Children Are With Her
Search Finds Children Staying With Relatives

BOSTON, Mass. -- Four state and local agencies searched the Charles River Friday night after a woman jumped from the Longfellow Bridge and told rescuers that her children were in the water.
The 41-year-old Mattapan woman landed in the water, but hit some rocks on the way down. She managed to swim to the shore on the Boston side and call for help, officials said.

When crews arrived, they said the woman started talking about her four children, leading officials to believe there could be someone else in the water. Children's clothing was found nearby, initially adding credence to her story.

“She initially made some conflicting reports about other people being in the water -- some children,” said Boston Fire Chief Michael Feely. “The state police tracked down all of her family members -- they’re all accounted for.”

Authorities said the woman's children and grandchild were safe with relatives.

Who's to say she wasn't hallucinating? She could be on drugs, off her meds, not yet meds, etc.
I don't know whether she lied or not. So until I find out more, I will remain neutral on this one.

At least she didn't hurt the kids.

I partially agree with this, BUT if she was on drugs, off meds or not yet on meds, again it's her own fault. Drugs.. well that's self-explanatory. There is a risk every time. Off meds - own fault. No one to blame but her. Not yet on meds - this is my gray area. If she has a mental problem that has yet to be diagnosed and properly treated, that may change things. I have a sibling who is bipolar and often goes on and off medication. When she's on them, she's right as rain, but when she's off, she's terrifying. She's up for days at a time during her manic phase and will sleep for days at a time on the down cycle. She's so unpredictable. I have received calls in the middle of the night to say "good-bye" leaving me panicking and calling different police departments to make sure she is ok and her kids won't find her dead. She lives in another state so it's hard.

I am relieved that the kids were never hurt. But I, too, will reserve judgement until there is more info out.

Reading the headline had me thinking "Good, she is dead and the kids are alive." Kind of a dissapointment to hear she lived, guess her rock-head was harder than the rocks she fell on.

Yeah, I was wondering too, very bizarre. Almost always these scenarios are drug related either recreational or other....or mental problems or a mix of both. I'm just so relieved, for a change the children are NOT in the water found dead. The woman has a lot of explaining to do but not nearly as much if she'd taken those children down with her.

Cases like this are rare, and in one way they are a relief. The thing that gets to me is the mental picture these rescuers have already set in their heads. That has to be horrid!

I am just going to throw this out there because it is what I have experienced in my own time:

I have never taken, nor seen a person take a drug that makes them just go off the deep end. PCP may be the exception but it is not a common drug in my area and the one person I ever heard of doing it around here was a born idiot and drugs just lowered his inhibitions and allowed him to be the truly stupid person that he is.

I think that is the reality of most cases that have drugs involved. The person was either a fucking idiot or plain evil to start with and the inhibitions go out when the drugs come in and we see some very horrid results. The fact is you either have it in you to be a piece of human garbage or you don't. Drugs may not even be the tipping point if you have dark proclivities. it could be stress, mental health deterioration, a sudden a overwhelming desire to not give a fuck whatever.

When we can't get our heads around some horrible, senseless, seemingly random act we like to blame drugs much the way that people in the Dark Ages blamed Demonic Possession. Both are great coping mechanisms for the rest of us but do jack shit to get at the real root of the problem.

I don't disagree with you @badfish76 but I will add that I've seen people that I know do things while drunk that were COMPLETELY out of character for them. Bad crazy shit. Granted they were drinking people and that's caused me to wonder if the partying lifestyle, say, long-term, causes some kind of brain damage?

Also, from what I've seen pcp is some horrible shit. I don't know exactly WHAT it does to f' up people's heads but it is not good. I've wondered a few times if it was responsible for some of the stuff I've seen on here.

Drinking is the Granddaddy of inhibition lowering substances in my experience. Alcohol does kill brain cells. I have no Earthly idea what PCP actually does to the brain and I don't intend to find out.
