Charlemagne Physic let her baby suffer with broken leg for weeks before getting help

A Daytona Beach mother is accused of ignoring her infant daughter's broken lower leg, which had the girl "crying in agony" for weeks before she received treatment, police said Friday.

But Charlemagne Physic thought her baby was suffering from colic, she told police.

Physic, 40, was charged with felony child neglect Thursday after an emergency-room doctor reported her, telling investigators, "The mother should have known," according to a Daytona Beach police report.

Police responded to Halifax Health Medical Center in early March when Physic brought in the girl "with complaints of thrush, colic and painful swelling to the victim's right leg," according to the report. An X-ray revealed she had a spiral fracture to her distal tibia.

The physician called in police and the state Department of Children & Families to investigate.

Physic told police her daughter started crying the previous Wednesday, but she couldn't see any injury. She also made vague statements about an accident -- saying something might have happened while changing the baby's clothes, yet also denying she caused any injury.

Another woman and her son who used to live with Physic each said they noticed something was wrong. The son said one of the baby's legs was bent, "balloon swollen" and bruised. He told police he thought it might have been a rodent bite.

At the hospital, the doctor told police "the only way to explain this injury is that it was done by someone else," according to the report.

Physic was being held Friday at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $1,000 bail.

Spiral fractures are caused by someone taking a limb and twisting (like wringing out a dish rag). It's an automatic sign of abuse.

Spirals almost always point to abuse, takes a lot of force to do that kind of damage too.

I wonder how old the baby is. If she's like my son who is almost 11 months old, she may have been trying to roll over during the change and mom got frustrated and yanked her to her back by her leg. I could see someone doing this. (After reading this site)

But how in the hell does the mom not notice.

I could understand a teen mom maybe not realizing that her child was hurt, but this Bitch is 40 years old. There is no way this is the first child she's ever been in contact with, and no way she couldn't tell her baby's swollen leg wasn't injured in some way. I bet she was hoping it would heal on it's own and didn't want to take her baby to the doctor because she was afraid she would get into trouble. But it didn't work, did it Bitch?
Poor baby, I hope there wasn't enough damage to mess up her leg permanently.

That wall-eyed twat broke her baby's leg and didn't want to get in trouble. She probably wouldn't lie still when she was changing her clothes or some other baby-esque behavior that she didn't have patience for. Knowing Florida, she'll get her back but I hope it takes a while.

My little boy is a real rodeo while changing, but I have still never broken his leg. You don't use all your strength while dealing with the baby. Mine thinks it is funny when I pull him back, and when he's feeling really froggy, will flip over and crawl away several times. That or he loves to go floppy, so it's hard to put his pants on, but he's just playing and testing out his independence.

Honestly, you can pull them back by their leg, but do it gently, with no abrupt motions. I can understand it being frustrating, there have been times when I need to get him changed and dressed quickly, that I have seen red, but he's still a happy, healthy toddler, with all limbs and joints intact.

My littlest guy is like yours. Love to flip over and try to get away. But even after having had 4 kids, not once have I ever hurt one of them by pulling on their leg to change them (or any other way).

This bitch needs to have someone grab her by each of her limbs and pull and twist until she breaks.

I remember a story where a mother took her baby in for a routine check up, the mom had a broken arm so the nurse was assisting her in dressing and undressing the baby. While the nurse was putting the babies clothes back on (in the presence of the dr and mother) the baby started screaming like a banshee. The mom, nor the dr could figure out what was wrong. Mom took baby home and baby screamed all night long...mom then took baby back to the dr the next day. X-rays showed the baby had a spiral fracture to his leg. The nurse has somehow caused the injury while putting the babies leg back into the pant leg.

I don't know whether this was an accident, intentional, or if mom just lost her patience but I can't see any level headed parent waiting a week to take a crying baby to the dr.
