NEWPORT BEACH (KTLA) -- Police have arrested a man wanted for kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old girl in Fullerton while dressed as a clown.

Jose Guadalupe Jimenez, 41, was arrested Friday morning in Newport Beach, more than 9 years after the crime.

Detectives say a DNA match linked Jimenez to the kidnapping and rape, which happened on Jan. 19, 2002.

Jimenez grabbed the girl from behind at the corner of Lemon and Commonwealth in Fullerton and drove her to a nearby school parking lot, where he raped her, Fullerton Police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said.

Fullerton police say Jimenez later took the girl to a motel off Harbor Boulevard, where he molested her again.

The girl escaped when Jimenez left the car to talk to a motel clerk. She told police her attacker was a Hispanic male, and was wearing a clown mask and clown make-up.

Investigators collected DNA evidence from the girl at the time and entered it into their system.

Jimenez was arrested in 2010, and his DNA was taken at that time.

In February 2011, police received a DNA hit from their database, linking Jimenez to the 2002 crime.

Jimenez works as a professional clown, under the name "El Tin Larin."

A 43-year-old man who worked as a clown has pleaded guilty to raping a 12-year-old girl while in costume a decade ago.

Jose Guadalupe Jimenez was immediately sentenced to 10 years in prison, Deputy District Attorney Katherine David said.

The Anaheim resident performed as a clown named El Tin Larin. He was wearing his costume when he abducted the girl around midnight, Jan. 19, 2002, in front of a Taco Bell restaurant in Fullerton.

He drove her to the parking lot of Ladera Vista Junior High School and raped her inside the car, David said.

The victim managed to escape when Jimenez exited the car at a nearby motel.

Jimenez wasn't connected to the crime until February 2011, when his DNA was collected as part of a misdemeanor battery case prosecuted by the Anaheim City Attorney's Office. He was arrested March 25, 2011.

He pleaded guilty to the battery charge in February and was sentenced to 180 days in jail.

On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to one felony count of a lewd act upon a child under 14 and one felony count of a forcible lewd act on a child under 14.
For those of you who missed this story, the 12-year-old victim was abducted from a fast food stand in 2002 by a man dressed as a clown. The clown took her to a nearby school parking lot and raped her in his van before taking her to a motel where he sexually assaulted her again. When the clown left the girl alone to talk to a motel clerk, the girl escaped and contacted police.
The case would remain open for nine years because the girl could only describe her attacker as a man dressed as a clown. With no other leads, all investigators could do was collect DNA and store it in their database. Then, in February of 2011, the system made a match between the DNA they’d collected and Jimenez. Police had collected his DNA in 2010 after he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of corporal injury to a child.…
