Cameron Spurback zoo volunteer fondles a 9-year-old visitor in the men's room

Police arrested a Lowry Park Zoo volunteer Tuesday afternoon who is accused of fondling a 9-year-old visitor in the men's room.

Cameron James Spurback, 21, of Tampa has no criminal history. The zoo did a background check on him before he began his volunteer position preparing food for the animals, said Laura McElroy, a spokeswoman for the Tampa Police Department.

Spurback, who police said has a disfiguring condition, went to the restroom at the end of his shift about 2:15 p.m., approached a 9-year-old boy in the restroom, pulled down the boy's pants and fondled him, authorities said. The boy told authorities Spurback then pulled down his own pants and fondled himself.

The child ran and told his parents what had happened. They flagged down security.

Security officers kept Spurback in the restroom until Tampa police arrived.

Spurback was charged with lewd and lascivious exhibition and lewd and lascivious molestation.

Looking at that photo...Wow. I usually want all child molesters to be horribly murdered but looking at this guy...I can't feel anything but pity. I doubt he ever really connected with anyone in his life and that surely warped him.

I hope he's insane...I would feel better locking him away in a mental institution for the rest of his life than in prison.

I was shocked, yes, to see his picture, but I do not feel pity for him. If he is sound-minded enough to volunteer, then he should be able to know the difference between right and wrong, appropriate and inappropriate. I have a 16 y/o cousin who has a severe facial disfigurement and yes, she is mocked, stared at and constantly made to feel like an outsider. The difference? She is a beautiful person and would never do something that would hurt another human, let alone a child. If this man has a disability that impairs his judgement, he never should have been permitted to volunteer without some sort of supervision. Period. Having a hard life or a handicap is never an excuse for being vile or a child molester.

And THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is exactly why my own son will be going to the ladies bathroom with me (unless his father is around) until he's big enough to kick some would be molestor's ass ~ regardless of the damning looks I receive from other patrons of said bathroom ;)
