A Newark-area woman has been charged with beating her children with a belt, police said today.


Theresa T. Jenkins, 27, of the first block of Kimberton Drive east of Newark, was arrested Monday after a nurse at Brookside Elementary School on Marrows Road reported that a 7-year-old girl was complaining of pain from bruises on her stomach. Her 9-year-old sister was called to the office where police said they found she had similar marks.

The Division of Family Services was contacted and both girls were treated at A.I. du Pont Hospital for Children and released.

Police said that Jenkins beat the girls Sunday night. She was charged with two counts of assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Jenkins was released on $1,000 unsecured bail and has been ordered not to have contact with her children until a family court hearing.

Amen to that Imp. I agree that link was more about adult consensual spanking than disciplining a child. I don't care that they use the words "child" or "kids".

I am not against spanking a child's behind when they are between 4 & about 8 (these are just ages I sort of use as a guideline when investigating child abuse). Using belts, paddles or any other instrument to administer the spanking is in my opinion bordering on abuse and it most certainly IS abuse if you are leaving marks on the child.
