Storing Your Meth In The Snack Drawer Keeps It All Too Handy

A 9-month-old child dies after ingesting a packet of methamphetamines and now a valley mother is facing murder charges.

23-year-old Veronica Linares is behind bars, held on second degree murder and child abuse charges.

According to court paperwork, Linares was at her Glendale home with her 9-month-old daughter back in September of 2009. That's when investigators say the little girl acquired the lethal dose of meth from the bottom dresser drawer in the nursery.

The paperwork goes on to reveal that the defendant admitted to keeping the child's snacks in the same drawer as the drugs.

The girl was born with meth in her system and had been placed in foster care. She'd only been living with Linares for one week when she ingested the lethal dose of drugs.

Child Protective Services reports show Linares made statements about never wanting the child and wishing the child was dead.

An autopsy of the child from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner revealed not only did she ingest a lethal dose of meth, but also had a wad of paper lodged in her esophagus.

Soon after the death of that child, police say Linares gave birth to another baby, who was also filled with meth.

That child was taken by the state and placed into the care of other family members. Linares, meanwhile, hit the road.

Police made multiple attempts to track down Linares before locating her at her apartment near North 4th Avenue and West Camelback Road in Phoenix on Wednesday.

Linares was brought to the Glendale police headquarters, where she told police she had been visiting to-and-from Mexico to avoid police, and noted she has been meth addict since she was 15.

When asked how her child died, Linares said and that she kept her meth stash in the same drawer as snacks for the 9-month-old kid, and the child probably mistook the meth for food.

Linares was booked into the Maricopa County Jail, and is facing charges of second-degree murder as well as child abuse.

I can't help but wonder why they didn't drug screen her before they gave her the baby back. If you get your baby taken away because she had drugs in her system at birth, testing for drugs seems like a "no brainer". Kinda defeats the point to take her for that reason but not check that that same reason is gone.

I don't know what the law is in other states, but here in La. every mother is tested for drugs when having a baby, so is the baby. If the test comes back positive for illegal drugs, or drugs for which she has no valid Rx, CPS takes the baby and the mother will face child abuse charges. My daughter was upset that they tested her (she wouldn't even take a tylenol or Pepto Bismol), but she's pretty innocent, in spite of marrying a musician. Runs in the family, oldest daughter married one too.

Mother Gets 10 Years for Child Abuse

PHOENIX - A Glendale mother learns her punishment for the death of her 9-month-old baby girl who ingested methamphetamine.

On Friday, the woman cried and pleaded for mercy before a judge handed down her sentence.

Veronica Linares plead guilty to child abuse charges and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

She was originally charged with second degree murder, but prosecutors agreed to a plea deal - because even though the meth belonged to her, there was no proof Linares tried to kill the little girl.

Linares spoke during her sentencing on Thursday.

"I loved my baby and I still carry her in my thoughts as well as my heart..that was my baby I carried for 9 months, I gave birth to her and cared for her, there's no way on God's green Earth that I would intentionally put my baby in harms way," she said.
