Thank you for clarifying DV. I guess things might be different here. Aren't you supposed to give a social security for shot records per state for database reasons? Did she receive medicaid or any other state aid? I'm just speculating. I have no idea where I am going with this.

Obviously Pettway either avoided or lied for anything that required documentation. Given all that illegal aliens are able to accomplish without that, it must be fairly easy in some places. She probably never claimed Carlina on taxes, went to "dubious" doctors, and whatever else it took.

I hope they shed so more light on that aspect of the case. It just boggles my mind that it happened for so long. I am fully aware of how illegals do it. I have several in my neighborhood. Most of them just don't seek medical attention at all.
Still, Carlina had a baby of her own. How did she manage that without records. Does her child have a SS# and birth certificate?

Good question. I assume that her child has documentation. I don't know what a doc/hospital does if you show up without whatever it is they need for documentation. I always have mine somewhere in the jumble known as my purse.

Carlina White began to draw suspicions about her real identity after connecting the dots to a few curious things about herself: she had no birth certificate, or social security number, and did not see any physical resemblances to any of her family members or relatives.

Seeking answers from her known mother, Ann Pettway, the 23 yr. old was told that she had been given away by a woman who used drugs.

Maybe saying "I don't know it" worked for whatever she was trying to do. I'm trying to remember what I produced to get my CT license and I think it was just my birth certificate (which back then was just on bond paper, now they are on like currency paper) and a piece of mail with my address on it.

Carlina White's reunion with her mother Joy after 23 years apart turns sour

It seemed like the ultimate happy ending to an unthinkable crime. In a reunion that charmed America, a young woman tracked down her biological parents 23 years after she was kidnapped from a hospital as a baby.

Joy White and the daughter she had not seen since she was a 19-day-old newborn hugged, cried and beamed with unrestrained delight at an emotional family celebration in New York last month.
But the American saga has rapidly turned from heart-warming to heartache. And Miss White fears she has lost her child for a second time after the feelgood fairy tale apparently descended into a financial feud over hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Carlina White was raised as Nejdra Nance in nearby Connecticut by Ann Pettway, the woman who is now in custody suspected of abducting her from Harlem Hospital in 1987. As an adult, Carlina, known as Miss Nance, moved to Georgia with her own young daughter Samani.
And she has now flown back to Atlanta, reverted to calling herself "Netty" and barely been in touch with Miss White since those initial few days together – except, says her mother, to ask about an old compensation deal.
"It's like we're two strangers, we don't know each other," Miss White revealed in a television interview last week. "She asked a lot of questions about the money, but it's gone. We don't have the money."
She is referring to the $750,000 (£470,000) award that she and her then partner Carl Tyson, Miss Nance's father, received after they sued the city-run hospital for negligence when their child was stolen by a woman reportedly posing as a nurse.

Miss White says the couple, who raised new families after separating, took $123,000 each from the settlement and put the remaining $424,000 into a trust fund until Carlina's 21st birthday in case they found her.
That day came and passed and Miss White says that she and Mr Tyson have now spent the whole award.

The money was a fortune by the standards of the rundown, crime-plagued Hunts Point district of the Bronx where Miss White lives in an unprepossessing apartment block. The average household income last year was barely $16,000 and more than half the population lives below the poverty line.
Miss White is vague when pressed on where the cash went. "It's gone, we don't have the money," she said. "At the time, things were really rocky with me. I have two other kids, and I had to take care of myself."

But there is no suggestion of impropriety or that she had any reason to believe she would ever see her missing child again. And she lamented that the few times her daughter has called in recent weeks have been to ask about the settlement.

Miss Nance had suspected since her childhood that she was not Pettway's child – a belief confirmed for her when she discovered her birth certificate was fake. But Pettway allegedly told her that her real mother was a drug addict who could not look after her had probably died of Aids.

But as a young woman, Miss Nance pursued her hunt for the truth and found a picture of a kidnapped newborn that she thought resembled her own baby pictures on a website for missing children.
Miss White's number accompanied the picture so Miss Nance called her. DNA tests subsequently confirmed that she was the daughter of Miss White and Mr Tyson, paving the way for last month's joyous scenes.
Police said that Pettway has admitted the kidnapping, telling them that she was depressed after several miscarriages. But her lawyer has since said she will plead not guilty to the original abduction.
What is not in dispute is that Miss Nance had been missing longer than any other American kidnap victim not seized by a parent. So even after she found her birth mother and father by her own detective work, the reunification was always going to be a challenge following such a lengthy separation.
Indeed, she remains close to Pettway's sister, who she had always believed to be her aunt, and child abuse and abduction experts said she could be suffering from "loyalty conflict" between the family with which she grew up and her blood relatives.

Reached on her mobile phone by the New York Daily News last week, Miss Nance said she had no plans to return to New York. Asked about her mother's comments, she said only: "How am I supposed to feel?"

Nothing disparaging was said about illegal aliens. The discussion was about how people without official IDs get services and other things. It seems natural to wonder how Pettaway would do common things without them. As illegal aliens are probably the largest undocumented segment of society, it seems natural to compare (as I said above, "Given all that illegal aliens are able to accomplish"). So although I am unfamiliar to life without ID, it is fairly obvious it can be done. No comments were made on that life.

As far as legal doccumentation is concerned...my mom didn't have my birth cert when I was little. All she had was a lil card that was attached to my bassinet when I was in the hospital. It had my footprints, and both of our names on it along with my DOB. She used that to register me for school, later when I went to get my permit all I had to do was show them my school transcript and my school ID card. I never actually had my birth cert until a few years ago when I traveled to Canada I had to have it to get across the border. Things are harder now, which is probably why Carlina finally figured out she was kidnapped.

So her family members smuggled her out of Canada to Gary Indiana where her mom had relatives and she wasnt registered until she was almost 3 years old when she was brought back and then when old enough had to have papers to go to school

New York (CNN) -- A woman who stole an infant from a Manhattan hospital in 1987 pleaded guilty to a federal kidnapping charge Friday and could face at least 20 years behind bars.

Ann Pettway has been charged in the abduction of Carlina Renae White, now in her early 20s, who was reunited with her biological mother last year.

Pettway pleaded not guilty to the kidnapping charge last year.

Carlina White was 19 days old when her mother took her to the Harlem hospital with a fever more than two decades ago. The mother, Joy White, testified that she went home to rest and returned to the hospital to find her baby missing.

"Ann Pettway preyed on me," Joy White said Friday, adding that she remembered seeing Pettway at the hospital.

This girl was neglected, abused & went through the foster care system, WHY would the White family be surprised when it wasn't all sugary and sweet in the long run? She's only 23 (er, 24 now?) and with that age we at times don't make good decisions. She is adrift, she never was given what she needed to feel truly connected. Except save her adoptive aunt maybe?
If I was 23 I would've asked about the money too. At 23 I was a young single mother and desperate for stability, I get it.

When I met my bio-dad it was strained and awkward......lasting relationships take time. To expect anything less is naive.

A woman who audaciously kidnapped a 3-week-old girl from a Manhattan hospital on a summer day a quarter-century ago and raised her to adulthood was sentenced on Monday to 12 years in prison.

“This was not a crime of greed, this was not a crime of vengeance,” Judge P. Kevin Castel of Federal District Court in Manhattan said in imposing the sentence on the woman, Ann Pettway. “But it was an act of selfishness, a crime of selfishness” that he said “inflicted a parent’s worst nightmare on a couple.”

The sentence drew a muted response from a packed courtroom populated with friends and relatives on both sides of the harrowing case.

In terse remarks before sentencing, Ms. Pettway, 50, apologized to the family of the kidnapped girl, Carlina White, and said, “I am here today to right my wrong and ask for forgiveness.”

Ms. White, who is now 25 and lives in Atlanta, did not attend the hearing and has distanced herself from the case. According to Ms. Pettway’s lawyers, she has a movie deal.

The parents, Joy White and Carl Tyson, who separated a year after the kidnapping, made emotional pleas for a prolonged prison term.

Lamenting how she was able to spend just 19 days with her daughter when she could “bathe her, wash her hair and then get her a bottle of milk and rock her to sleep,” an emotional Ms. White said that after the kidnapping she could not eat or sleep and sought psychiatric counseling. “I’m broken into a million pieces,” she said.

When he spoke, Mr. Tyson glared at Ms. Pettway and told her, “For 23 years, Ann, you had me suffering.” He said, “What you should get is 23 years, what you took away from me.”
