Clifton Woman Charged With Arson

Clifton - A Clifton woman is arrested for allegedly setting her own apartment on fire with her kids still inside.

Kayla Settle, 22, was arrested Wednesday after she confessed to setting her Clifton apartment on fire last month. The apartment is located at 3225 Rood Avenue.

According to an arrest affidavit, Settle originally told investigators she was sexually assaulted and knocked unconscious by a masked man before the fire began.

But authorities determined she was lying, and Settle decided to come clean. She told investigators that she was feeling depressed and suicidal the night of the fire.

After smoking some pot and taking some cold medicine, Settle said went into the room of her two kids and set a piece of clothing on fire.

Settle and her kids were able to get out safely, along with Settle's brother, who was also in the apartment at the time.

Settle is now facing a number of charges, including arson, criminal mischief, and child abuse. She's currently being held in the Mesa County Jail.

I saw her profile pics or whatever, but I wanted to see the kids the most, considering she wanted to kill them. I love to see pictures of the ones who survive.

Kaylabitch, when you find this thread next year, do not waste your time or ours trying to explain your actions. There are no excuses for this.
If you want to kill yourself, by all means, do so. Leave your kids out of it.
Also, to effectively kill yourself would be to take several bottles of pills. Space these over several hours. Drink milk so you don't puke them up. Just before you pass out, but the heavy plastic bag over your head. Tie the knot several times. Mmmmkay?

It's true. You really don't know all the facts. Her sister "Katie" is not her sister, that is her mother. The younger girl is her daughter, who is 6. The son is 4. The family has had a lot of problems within their past and Kayla is going through some rough bumps in the road. There is no excuse for what she did to her kids but the fact is is that she did something that should never have happened. But there are issues with her that don't need to be mentioned. She is currently going through therapy and is seeking help. Hopefully it'll turn her life and help her out in the years to come. The family made her profile private because of threads like this. They've already got their problems, they don't need any more.

How about the kids? Obviously they are going to need therapy knowing their mom tried to light them on fire.

I have been depressed to the point of not even able to go outside, eat, or function normally, and my kids were never placed in danger at my doing. I call bullshit. Lately when asshats commit crimes, they blame it on depression and "issues". So if people knew she had "issues" why not try to get her some help? Ah, this is annoying, it's like a damn script all the defenders use....change names, and ages, and it's bascially the same shit that they all spew out of their mouths.

I fail to see how this site (and others like it) has any bearing on the family's problems. They can choose not to read it, not to respond to it and thereafter how does it affect them one way or the other? No one here is going there to confront them. Even though sometimes we say we'd like to, this hasn't been one of those cases.

The point is, she tried to set her children on fire. Problems or not, she still did it, I don't care what reasons she had, how bad her life might be, what weird things are going on in her family, there is no excuse to try and hurt your children. If things were that bad, call an abuse hotline, give your kids to a family member, give your kids to CPS, anything would be better than trying to hurt them. No Excuse!!
So, I will say what I want about it. So will everyone else on this site.

The thing is is that no one knew anything about this. No one in the family did. She has been treated for depression but this came out of no where. No one had any idea that she had this in her. What we are worried about is the children and they made it all out okay. I understand that they may need therapy in the future if possible, but they are young. Something like this will not effect them as much as most people may think. The way that the family is taking care of them will help them move past what had happened and learn to accept the fact that it happened. I am not trying to defend her. I know that what she did is beyond wrong. But the fact is is that everyone is safe, including the children. Everyone will have their opinion to this story. The children are away from their mother at this point in time and are in good hands. I'm just saying that there is more to this story than meets the eye and what the media is saying.

Kayla isn't the first to do shit like this. She won't be the last.
But regardless, she tried to light the house on fire. Period. End of story. We really don't need further info except your news the children are safe. That's good.
Now she is facing charges. My guess is arson and attempted murder though I hope I'm wrong about the last one for the childrens sake.
I,too, suffer depression. Tried several times to kill myself, but I never tried to kill someone else with me. I got help. Am now on medication. See a psychiatrist. Everything I can do to keep myself sane. Its not easy. But if I can do it, anyone else can.

i like your name and your post seem to make sense. but the simple fact is, i don't care if her mom was her uncle and her grand-father was her dad. i really don't care what has happened in her past. most folks have some pretty shitty toys in their attic. i am happy the kids are ok, but in the end, she is still a grade "A" piece of shit.

I know exactly how that feels. I hope you're doing better now. Mine was a by-product of the PTSD stuff, but it's the part that hit me hard.

People who are allowed to skate by on piddly excuses like this are not doing any favors for themselves and therefore should not be let out of prison until they do take responsibility. After serving the original sentence of course.

Days after her apartment burns down, Kayla Settle said she's lucky she's alive.
"We lost a lot. It's gone. It's hard," Settle said.
Settle has experience with fires. Only a month ago, someone started a fire outside of her complex using gasoline.
"The fire investigators are saying that we were definitely targeted; we do know that. There's always ideas who would do something like this, but is it a for sure thing? We're not sure," she said.
"We had a fire there last month that was determined arson and it's too much of a coincidence to ignore if you have a fire in this close time frame in less than a month for a fire that was arson and occurred at this location. So we're paying special attention to being very thorough with this investigation. However, the cause right now is undetermined," Clifton fire investigator Chris Rowland said.
After the first fire was ruled arson, Settle decided staying in the complex was too risky.
"It's very scary especially when you have two kids. We have found a house. We have a closing date set up and everything," Settle said.

Funny how she is talking about the safety of her kids yet destroyed their material things and general well-being. ninja loki, thanks for your input. It's nice to see a family member or friend come in with concern about the kids. Sadly, it's rare and more often we see people only care about the reputation of the suspect. People who mess with kids hit a real nerve in this place and people tend lash out.
I do hope that Kayla gets all the help she needs and can begin steps to heal herself. Above anything else, I hope the kids always have the love and safety of their family, and it sounds like they do:)

I have also been to that point with 2 small kids depending on me and nobody else
After our son died we separated awhile with all the stress
And I had to work and feed and clothe and keep a roof over my kids heads by myself I was 20/21 and my husband was so lost in grief he was useless to us (in means of child support)
And not 1 time did it even enter my mind to do something like this

This woman/child should never get these kids back
Whos to say that next time she doesnt get her own way or something doesnt go her way she wont be successful in killing them
And Im sorry but to attempt to kill her brother at the same time
Theres a mothers love but Im sorry that can only go so far when your talking about a sibling attempting to kill another

If you really give your head a shake and think about it the family (or her) that began the writing campaign here only added fuel to the fire

I have seen a few just as you describe. Parent(s) spend their money on weed then send the kids to ask for money or something to feed them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a heartless POS, but they never got money to help out. I keep plenty of canned and frozen goods to feed others. And I don't give them enough to sell to some other person. Hell even the adults know that if they show up at munchie time, they will be offered a plate at least. If they leave my house hungry it's not my fault!
