A Western Pennsylvania girl missing for 14 months was found safe in Poland after a woman recognized her picture on a missing child's wanted ad.
Angelina Martin had been missing from her grandparents home in Pittsburgh since Aug. 25, 2009. Police believe her parents took her after losing custody to the girl's grandparents.
On December 18, the now 4-year-old girl was found 60 miles away in Poland, all because a woman who wishes not to be identified recognized Angelina on a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's poster in Youngstown Saturday and called authorities.
"What's most inspiring is that every day average people, doing average things and simply paying attention, are helping us find missing children and returning them with their families," said Ernie Allen with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
In this case, by Saturday night police tracked the child down to a home in Poland. But this story could have ended differently if the woman who called the case in hadn't responded as quickly as she did.
"You could tell talking to her, I could tell she was shook up. She goes, 'I've never had anything like this happen to me before.' She goes, 'I was shocked when I looked up and saw that poster and saw that child's picture, you know on there," said Lt. Raymond Fellows with the Springfield Township police department.
"Her recovery was because of an unsung hero who saw something, who knew something, who reached out and told somebody," said Allen.
Allen stresses callers can remain anonymous.
"Look at the picture of the child in the eyes. Take the two seconds necessary."
