LA JOLLA, Calif. — An inquisitive Jack Russell terrier is back with its owner after she ran away and became trapped deep inside a pile of rocks.
The dog, a 7-year-old female named Fuji, managed to escape from her leash during a walk Tuesday, according to her owner, Ruth Guymer. The Jack Russell ran off and Guymer was unable to find her.
On Wednesday, a group of beach goers heard a dog whimpering. They followed the sound to a sea wall made rocks. The dog was trapped inside the wall, so they contacted lifeguards.
When lifeguards tried to free the dog, they discovered that she had managed to wedge her head in a small opening and could not pull it free. They worked for five hours using a variety of tools, including a cattle prod. Eventually they had to tranquilize the animal and oil her head and neck.
At 9:15 p.m., shortly before they planned to give up the effort for the night, they managed to free her from the opening and bring her out to her anxious owner and the crowd that had gathered to watch the rescue operation.
"I'm really happy that we got the dog," Guymer said. "She's off to the hospital. Those amazing men just did the greatest job."
