Mother, 2 kids stabbed to death in Ohio; beau hurt

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A woman and her two children were found stabbed to death in their central Ohio apartment on Friday after she didn't show up for Thanksgiving dinner or work the following day.

Thomas Hendricks of Columbus said his daughter, 31-year-old Tia Hendricks, was killed along with her children, 10-year-old Tahlia Hendricks and 2-year-old Tyron Hendricks Montgomery.

Columbus police Sgt. Rich Weiner said officers found the three victims Friday afternoon and a man still alive with stab wounds. Authorities took the man to a local hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Police wouldn't say whether the man was a suspect. But authorities said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the killings.

Tia Hendricks' aunt, Anita Hayes, said the man is her niece's live-in boyfriend and the boy's father. She said they had lived at the Columbus apartment since September.

"It just seems so unreal. You read about this stuff in the paper, but you don't expect it to happen in your own family," Hayes said.

"We talked, like, literally every day," Robinson said. She called Hendricks twice Wednesday night with no answer and a few times on Thanksgiving to wish her a happy holiday. By Friday, when Hendricks didn't show up to work and hadn't returned a single phone call, Robinson sensed something wasn't right.

She called Hendricks' mother and they went to her apartment complex with a few relatives. They knocked on her door, and after no one answered, a maintenance worker took them to a rental office and an employee called police. Authorities found the bodies inside.

Tia Hendricks had just taken on a second job as a cashier at Burlington Coat Factory to earn extra money for Tahlia and Tyron.

"She said, 'I want the kids to have a good Christmas,'" Robinson said.

Police said in a statement that Montgomery was charged with three counts of murder.

I never will comprehend the killing of the kids, I know a person can get so mad at their wife/bf/gf/husband that you could do something stupid out of anger, but to run after the kids and kill them, that takes a special coldness... killing your own child? looks like momma fought back, she wasnt going out easy and its sad to read that she got a 2nd job to give her kids an xmas, she was trying hard, but had he been worth something, she wouldnt have had to do that...

I figured the injured man found in the apartment with them was the POS who took their lives.

He survives but the children and mother didn't...always seems to work out this way. I hope he rots from the inside out.

Hendricks had been dating Montgomery - the father of 2-year-old Tyron - off and on for several years, relatives said. Her family had never cared much for the man who once kicked in their front door.

"If I could see him right now, I would ask him, 'Why the kids? Why did you do that to the kids?'" Hayes said.

Tahlia was a bright girl who had the potential to accomplish her goals. She earned good grades. She cheered, swam and studied Spanish at school.

WHY did he take out the kids too? only possible reason he's a loathesome, scum sucking, selfishish, putrid fuck. I hope he lives to see his 100th birthday in prison with a knife wound to his gut and heart. That for starters, then hell is waiting.

3-judge panel to rule if he’s subject to death penalty

A Columbus police homicide detective wiped away tears yesterday as he testified about autopsy photos of a 10-year-old girl who was stabbed to death, along with her mother and 2-year-old brother, in a North Side apartment on Thanksgiving Day 2010.

A three-judge panel is to announce today whether the man responsible for the crimes is subject to the death penalty.

Caron E. Montgomery, 37, pleaded guilty yesterday in the slayings of his live-in girlfriend, Tia Hendricks, 31; their 2-year-old son, Tyron Hendricks; and her 10-year-old daughter, Tahlia Hendricks, in their apartment on Broad Meadows Boulevard.

Franklin County prosecutors then presented evidence aimed at convincing three Common Pleas judges that they should consider the death penalty in sentencing him.

Homicide detective Dana Croom, the lead investigator, testified during the entire hearing. The 24-year police veteran choked up when Assistant County Prosecutor Jennifer Rausch handed him photographs of what he described as the “defensive wounds” on Tahlia’s hands and arms.

Common Pleas Judges Guy Reece, Pat Sheeran and Richard S. Sheward plan to announce at 9 a.m. today whether they agree with prosecutors that death-penalty specifications apply. If they do, the judges will hold a separate hearing, beginning this morning, to allow the defense to present mitigating factors that could lead to a sentence of life in prison. A unanimous decision by the three judges is required to impose the death penalty.

The judges overruled objections to showing the crime scene and autopsy photos from defense attorney J. Scott Weisman, who said they were meant to inflame the judges and were unnecessary in establishing the death-penalty specifications.

The indictment says Montgomery qualifies for a death sentence because the crimes involved the purposeful killing of two or more people; they were committed with “prior calculation and design” or to avoid detection; and two of the victims were younger than 13 years old.

He deserves the death penalty. This should be an eye opener to women everywhere who have seen the violence in a man but stay thinking things will change, get better, or that for some odd reason the children "need" a bad dad in their lives as opposed to not having one at all. Some women believe the abuse is limited to them, not the children, never the children... This woman obviously supported everyone, worked hard, and loved her children. The thought that she died defensively and not being able to save her children must of caused so much mental anguish in her final moments...the children being violently killed, crying out for their mom...so much trauma and pain at the end...the two year old also dealing with the confusion of his own father killing him....how fucking tragic, so wrong....and it seems to happen to the women who love and work the most for their family. Their hope, faith and love cloud their judgment of harsh reality and impending danger....they try to see the good in people...Ladies, sometimes you have to close shop on your heart and think logically! Having your children exposed to a bad relationship is worse than the personal struggle of managing alone. Safety has to be a priority....I hope this family's tragedy opens the eyes of even one woman who is in a similar predicament, to not be in vain or forgotten...we can't afford to have our good people killed while the rotten scumbags live! Death penalty! Heart for a heart!
