Priest Found Guilty Of Hiring Hit Man To Kill Teen Who Accused Him Of Sex Abuse

Authorities say a former Roman Catholic priest charged with sexually abusing a teenage boy and raping him at gunpoint is now accused of plotting the teen's murder.

A spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety says 52-year-old John Fiala was arrested at his suburban Dallas home after meeting with an undercover officer to arrange for the teen's death.

Agency spokesman Tom Vinger tells the San Antonio Express-News that an informant told sheriff's officials that Fiala offered him $5,000 to kill the teen.

The teen filed a lawsuit in April alleging he was sexually assaulted by Fiala in 2007 and 2008.
in September the priest was arrested and indicted on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault by threat. He was freed on bond.

The teen says the abuse took place during private catechism classes and in a hotel room.
The lawsuit also claims archdioceses covered up Fiala's record of abuse.

The Omaha, Nebraska archdiocese has since revealed that in 2002 a minor came forward to report a sexual assault by Fiala in the mid-1980s, according to the Express-News.

'Fiala had threatened him with physical violence and threatened to kill him before, and he was very afraid of that,' the teen's attorney Tom Rhodes said.
'My client wasn't happy that Fiala was trying to recruit someone to kill him, but he's happy Fiala is in jail now.'

Jail records show Fiala now faces a count of murder solicitation.
Bail is set at $700,000

Fate of ex-priest in alleged death plot with jury

DALLAS (AP) — A Dallas jury is deliberating the fate of a former Roman Catholic priest accused of plotting the death of a man who accused him of sexual abuse.

John M. Fiala faces a charge of solicitation of capital murder. He's accused of trying to hire a neighbor's brother to kill his accuser, who had said Fiala abused him at the ex-priest's former rural West Texas parish in 2008 when he was 16.

The Dallas Morning News (http://bit.ly/LfSaxz) reports that during closing arguments earlier Thursday, prosecutors urged jurors not to believe Fiala's claims he only told a purported hit man to kill his accuser because he thought his own life was in danger.

A defense attorney says Fiala didn't want his accuser killed.

Fiala faces up to life in prison if convicted.

That someone was an 18-year-old boy Fiala had met in 2007, when the boy was only 16 and when Fiala was*a priest at the Sacred Heart of Mary Parish.*Authorities say Fiala would meet the teen at the teen’s grandmother’s house and would groom him with gifts like a cell phone, MP3 player, and cash for a car. In 2008, during a trip to a youth event, Fiala allegedly raped the teen at gunpoint*in a motel room.
Afterwards, Fiala began abusing the teen at least twice a month. These incidents would take place on church grounds under the guise of private catechism lessons, or in motels when Fiala would drive the boy to meet his girlfriend.…
