Members of the Westboro Baptist Church said they want revenge after someone slashed the tires on their van during visit to protest a military funeral in McAlester. The group said it plans to now target funerals for Oklahoma children.

The group said it planned to picket the funeral of an 8-year-old Burneyville girl who died in an accident at the Love County Fairgrounds last week, although no protesters were seen near the services. The group said it would be in Owasso on Thursday to protest the funeral of a girl who died in a car crash.

The Westboro Baptist Church's website now reads "God Hates Oklahoma" and "The Lord curses them by killing Oklahoma's children and casting them into hell. Thank God for more dead children in Oklahoma."

If people were to picket their church services and funeral rites, they'd be very quick to cry to the police about their freedom of religion. These people are just f-ing hypocrites! Since we cannot stop them from exercising their freedom to protest, we should be able to force them to take their protests a reasonable distance from the funeral and cemetery gate. I assume they can't protest on cemetery grounds, because those are usually privately held. If I were anywhere near this church, though, I'd have no trouble at all standing across the street with some nasty picket signs about their favorite reading and private activities.

I hate to make this a poltical thing... but I will sadly note outrage over this group didn't really began for a lot of people until they started protesting at military funerals and now this.
When they were doing it to funerals of LGBT citizens who died or were murdered, there was nary a peep from many people. When they started doing it to "normal" people, that's when the outrage started.
Either way, people that are opposed to civil rights for LGBT citizens means they're in league with scumbags like this.

You could try Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA). They have a good track record showing up in court for child abuse trials. Picketing a child's funeral is child abuse once removed, in my opinion.

Members of a Kansas church that protests at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck arrived and loaded up the minivan. Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counterprotesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier's funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the
Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of "USA, USA."

A few motorcyclists interspersed among the crowd also revved up their engines to muffle the protests.

And for the record, I've hated them right back, from the beginning. But there's a special little corner of my heart that hates them for picketing Mr Roger's funeral. Mr Rogers. McAlester is my hometown. Some beautiful pictures of the counter protest were all over Facebook. Shamefully, someone egged a bunch of cars with Kansas plates at a local hotel thinking they were from Westboro. Turned out they were railroad workers who've been working in McAlester for many, many years.

Since it happened, they began claiming that the 10 day old in the washing machine was God's punishment on Oklahoma's children (even though that happened before the soldier's funeral), as well as the 8 year old's death.

Because of the tire slashing (so they claim...it's not like they've never had their tires slashed before), Westboro is planning to return to McAlester to picket several different sites on the 10th. No telling whether or not they'll send the whole twisted clan or a couple of women & children like they did last time. A lot of debate going on right now, as many people say they should just be ignored this time around. Because ignoring hate has always worked so well, you know?

These people are crazy. They are a cult in my opinion. Extreemists to the extreme. They speak of God as if he is a man/higherpower/energy (whatever) that loves only them...and as if they are the only ones who count and nobody else does. Last time I looked in the bible, I am pretty sure ALL men/women/children were loved by God. And also, according to the bible, he is not a vengeful, but a loving God. The God I know and believe in would never strike down children. Not that I am the judge, but somehow I don't think they will get the welcoming blessing they dream of at heavens pearly gates. Just my opinion.

May God strike these foolish, despicable people down, or at least see that their tires deflate on the way to every funeral they go to spread hate. And speaking casting children to hell, how sick is that?

These people who act out in a zealous, crazed manner scare me more than a lot of the ex-con's on the street. They are nuts, but everything they do is legal....they make sure of it. According to a recent article Fred Phelps has 13 children. 11 of them are lawyers.

Phelps, a Topeka civil rights attorney in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, has 13 children. Eleven of them are attorneys, and nine are directly involved in the church and the ministry. Four of them practice in the Phelps law firm, which he founded.



Most of his children — as well as 56 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren — live in the compound, or within a block or two of it. The school-age children in the family attend public schools, where they make good grades. Most of the adult children hold professional jobs. Some of Phelps’ children are estranged from the family and have spoken publicly against it.



The church is fenced and gated, but contrary to some rumors in Topeka, family members say services are open to the public.



Phelps still preaches a 45-minute sermon every Sunday to a congregation of about 70, nearly all of them related to him by blood or marriage.

This is by far, one of the best solutions to these assholes and their message of hate. I love you!!! Then they cant sue and fund their cult.
But on a side note, it would be very difficult to keep ones composure, at a childs funeral. Let alone having a group of people yelling "Happy your baby is dead!". A mother crazed with grief might go berserk..rightfully so.

It is quite possible that if these thugs had kept protesting at regular peoples funerals they would never have gotten much media attention at all but when they messed with American hereos it drew some attention.

That's exactly the point, though. It was just as morally wrong for them to picket "regular people's funerals". The reaction they wanted was enough people to show up in counter to illicit some kind of response in which they would be entitled to sue for damages. When they didn't get that, they moved on to soldiers. Since they still haven't gotten that (or if they have, not enough of it apparently) they're moving on to children.

Ignoring these people has never worked. They're going to make damn sure they get the attention they want, because even bad publicity is good publicity to them. It increases their chances of making free money. Fred Phelps figured this out as a civil rights attorney decades ago.

What will they pick next? Everybody's funerals? After all, God does hate everybody but them. It's not like they're just going to put their tails between their legs and go back to gay/lesbian funerals just because nobody showed up at the next soldier's wake.

There are more than just two extremes here. The only choices aren't limited to beating the shit out of them as a mob, denying them access or ignoring them.

Pimp them out. Sell "Muffburgers" and "Dicks on Sticks" in their honor. I can't imagine they'd show up to Oklahoma too many more times if thousands of dollars were donated to their "foes" every time they did it. And if they do decide to keep coming and raising money for the cause...GOOD.
