2,000 fetuses found at Thai Buddhist temple

BANGKOK — Thai police investigating a strong smell emanating from a Buddhist temple have found more than 2,000 fetuses hidden in the complex's morgue that appear to have come from illegal abortion clinics.

During an initial investigation at the temple in Bangkok on Tuesday, police discovered piles of plastic bags containing more than 300 fetuses. Police Lt. Col. Kanathud Musiganont said workers pulled more bodies from the temple's morgue Friday. More than 2,000 have been unearthed from vaults where bodies are traditionally interred pending cremation, which under some circumstances can take place years after death.

Abortion is illegal in Thailand except under three conditions -- if a woman is raped, if the pregnancy affects her health or if the fetus is abnormal.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Friday that more must be done to prevent illegal abortions but that his government would not revise the abortion-related laws. He said his government has discussed the matter and believed that "the existing laws are appropriate and flexible enough."

Several people have already been arrested in the case: two undertakers for hiding bodies to conceal the cause of death and an abortion clinic employee on charges of operating an unlicensed medical clinic and performing abortions. The undertakers could each be sent to prison for up to one year and fined 2,000 baht ($67). The clinic employee -- who police said confessed she had delivered the fetuses to the morgue workers starting early this year -- could face up to five years in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht ($333).

I know, this is a touchy subject but we see the end results everyday, of what happens to a child, that wasn't wanted in the first place but for whatever reason, (perhaps a welfare check), the Mom decided to keep it. Only to smother them, drown them, starve them, let the penis use them as a punching bag ect.
It is sad to say and I feel dirty saying it but I think this, is much more humane.

Agree, this is horrendous. But if the child isn't wanted we see what happens all the time. With 2,000 fetus' found I'd say their current laws have failed, need to rework them. What a grisly discovery. Rest in peace little ones.

OMG! Oh Poor babies! At least someone gave a shit and wanted to see them have a "proper burial".

It may not be OUR culture to "save 'em up" for a mass ceremony but I don't think it's our place to judge how other cultures do it. In the US, they are not saved but just thrown into the incinerator.

More than 2,000 illegally aborted fetuses have been recovered at a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thai police said Friday.

The fetuses were initially discovered earlier in the week, given away by the smell of decay at the Phai-nguern Chotinaram temple in central Bangkok. Friday's recovery efforts brought the total discovered to 2,002 fetuses, police Col. Metee Rakpan said.

"From the confession of one of the morticians of the temple that we interrogated last night, he told us that they received these fetuses from the same places as the first lot of 348 fetus remains, and they became dry," said Col. Sombat Milintachinda, chief of the investigation team. "We think that they might have arrived here about a year ago."

Authorities had arrested a woman on two charges, Milintachinda said.

"One is to perform illegal abortions and open an unlicensed clinic," he said.

Two morticians had been charged with hiding bodies and faced about a year in jail if convicted, police added.

Temples in Thailand typically have morticians who prepare bodies for cremation.

"From our interrogation of the morticians, they admitted that they have been receiving fetuses for about four years, and they told us that they kept the fetuses until they dried up, so it is easy to burn them," Milintachinda said.

The fetuses came from illegal abortion clinics, police Lt. Col. Chusak Kumsai said Wednesday.

Abortion is illegal in Thailand, unless a woman is endangered by pregnancy or has been raped.
