Obviously not. According to the article you linked
He set up a design company in the UK in 1989...
The asshat who killed the baby is only 32 years old. In 1989 he would have been 11 years old.

i think maybe the 'fits' they are referring to are seizures...not trying to dissect your post! but i dont think theyre talking about throwing fits or tantrums....some people call seizures 'having fits' and remember they are 'across the pond' they use different terms sometimes

Fits/Epilepsy/Convulsions...The term epilepsy (pronounced as eh-puh-lep-see) originates from a Greek word 'epilepsia' meaning 'falling sickness' It is an illness that affects the brain, causing repeated seizures or 'fits' in the patient which make them to fall.

Manchester Crown Court was told by the babysitter that when Newton, 32, the partner of Charlie’s mother Laura Chapman, arrived home from work 15-month-old Charlie appeared to become anxious.

The babysitter, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “As I was going to leave he didn’t really want me to go and clinged on to me.

It's hard enough to read about the abuse, torture and beatings. But when I read how the babies were anxious around their tormentors, or clingy towards the people who cared for them properly and with love, it just makes me want to simultaneously weep and scream.

Weep because of the fear and despair those babies were feeling but couldn't express in words, and scream because people noticed something was 'off', but didn't understand or were in too much of a rush with their own lives to take any notice, or find out what was wrong.

Poor baby, at 15mths he was far too young to be able to say how scared he felt. all he could do was try and stop the sitter from leaving. And I'd bet my last penny that he was clinging desperately to his 'mother' every time she went to leave him with that monster. And she pried him off, turned her back on his fear, and left him to be beaten to death. She should be on trial right alongside Newton.

And you just know that bastard was seeing Charlies fear, and relishing it. I'm sure it added to his fun, and was the tasty appetizer to the main course of pain he had planned for the baby.

We need the death penalty back over here. Urgently.

It's hard to imagine what the defense strategy could have been with the video. Much better to cut a deal when your dirty deed is immortalized on tape.

poor kid. i don't understand how the mother hadn't noticed ANYTHING on her child. i'm sure he was acting different. probably even cried hysterically when she would leave the house and he'd be alone with that piece of shit. i hope she's at least is honest with herself, and to everyone else if she was witness to the abuse. Then again, she's the one who has to live with guilt the rest of her life. i hope she fears death because, well, she's fucked if that's the case.

there's no words to describe him, so i won't try. i just wish they would rule all pieces of shit capable of doing these things a lost cause and have them exterminated in what-ever way the victim's family sought fit.

people capable of inflicting this kind of abuse are "not right in the head". i think child abusers & pedophiles are not, and will not EVER be rehabilitated. if you're sick... you're sick. with that being said he was well aware of what he was doing to repeatedly do it, then to fucking record it like he's gloating. fuck him. rofl "i only hit the baby 100+ times in the head over a period of months but i did NOT murder him!!!"

    ...ok.

castrate + prison + lots of big guys who know his crime = asshole falling out or being no longer attached to his being in no time. wonder how scared of a bitch he'll be when he's the victim and on the other end of the fucking abuse. universal rule of execution should be implicated to people such as this. they had no mercy for their victim's and were in a state of mind to where they knew what they were doing is wrong and just got fucking off by doing it. stop letting them suck up so much oxygen and KILL him.

I hope the UK does better in this case than with baby P's. It's time they realize that it's the VICTIMS who need justice, not the criminals. Murdering sons of bitches that torture babies don't deserve to be coddled.

Granted, Canada doesn't exactly do better. In cases like this, I wish we could send the worst criminals to Texas, to get their just punishment.

At least for the mother, in THIS case she wasn't sitting there laughing at her kids suffering. That's the one point she has going for her. For her not to notice something was off though is ignorant at best, and dismissive neglect at worst.

A man accused of murdering his girlfriend's 15-month-old son admitted beating the child - but told a jury: 'I didn't enjoy it.'

Darren Newton videoed his attacks on little Charlie Hunt over a four-month period on his mobile phone.
    [...]

Newton was asked about the 'Two minutes of pain' video where he slams Charlie's hand down on his high chair and twists his right ear twice as the baby screams and cries.

Dennis Watson, QC, prosecuting at Manchester Crown Court said: 'You are filming him as you inflict pain on him,' Mr Watson said.

'I accept that yes,' Newton replied.

'He tries to put his little hand up...what was going through your mind?'

    'Again, no answer,' Newton said.

Mr Watson continued: 'Is it too difficult to admit you enjoyed doing what you were doing to him, which is why you did it again and again?'

'I did not enjoy doing it,' Newton replied.

Mr Watson added: 'A helpless baby in reality, wasn't he? He could not speak, could not tell anyone, could not complain, could he?'

    'No,' Newton replied.

In the three-minute video entitled 'Happy Slap' Newton is seen hitting the sobbing child on his head 13 times.

Mr Watson asked Newton: 'What were you trying to do?'

    'I don't know, I honestly don't know,' he replied.

'Thirteen times, that vulnerable area. Why choose his head, 13 times?'

'I don't know,' said 32-year-old Newton who pleaded guilty to 12 counts of cruelty - each videoed - but denies murder.
    [...]

But Newton, told the jury he 'never touched' the child on the day Charlie died.

Mr Watson began his cross-examination of the defendant by asking: 'Mr Newton, are you sorry?' Newton replied: 'Sorry for what?'

'Is that your question of me? What for? The video you saw this morning?'

Newton replied that he was sorry for the video.

Mr Watson asked: 'Did you take pleasure from the fact that you were being cruel to him?' 'No.'

'You gave them titles so you could look at them?' Mr Watson continued.

'I did not look at them over and over again.'

I'll bet he's sorry for the video. Now. Without that, he would have got away with murdering this poor baby.

Oh, sure, he didn't enjoy it. When perps video their actions, they do it so they can relive it and enjoy it over and over again.

He's like a "serial abuser" - he enjoyed reliving the moment of hurting that baby over and over again just like a serial killer enjoys reliving the kill over and over again. I would like to go find him just with my finger. I don't need a weapon. I would stick my finger in his ear as far as I could and twist it around just like he did to this poor little Angel of God.
I just don't trust anyone and I would have noticed my child acting "cold" towards someone in a heartbeat and would have kept them apart. But I think that is just all of us on DD - we have all been through something and have issues so we know what to look for and we know what is important in our lives.
I think another red flag for me would have been the fact that he was in his thirties and still living at home with his parents - he had problems somewhere.
    what do ya'll think?

A man who filmed himself abusing his girlfriend's 15-month-old son has been found guilty of the child's murder.

Darren Newton, of Earby in Lancashire, had denied killing Charlie Hunt but admitted 12 counts of cruelty. The baby died of head injuries in November 2009.

The 32-year-old is due to be sentenced at the court later.

    YES!!!!!

Now all we need is for him to be handed a sentence which actually MEANS something. Not the usual pathetic, slap-on-the-wrist, 5-minutes-on-the-naughty-step crap they usually hand out in the UK.

Cowardly, sadistic, evil, disgusting, baby torturer and murderer, DARREN NEWTON.

Sentencing him to a minimum of 24 years behind bars, Judge Stephen Irwin his actions showed pure ’wickedness.’

He said: ‘Anyone who watches the video clips of some of what you did – and I am convinced you recorded only some of what you did – will genuinely struggle to understand why you came to do this.

‘Charlie was in your care and you abused that trust. He was too young to tell his mother what you were doing so she could prevent it.’
    [...]

It later emerged Miss Chapman was known to social services because she has two older children in care though Charlie Hunt was not on an ‘at risk’ register.

A Serious Case Review was carried out and the findings are due to be published by Ofsted at a later date.

Outside court Miss Chapman said: ‘He is evil and twisted, for what he did to Charlie.

‘Charlie was an angel. He was always very happy, he loved to play and he was a good eater and a good sleeper. Any mother would have loved to have been mother of that little boy.

‘If I’d had any suspicions about what had been going on then I would probably be in the dock for murder myself - I’d have killed Darren.

‘I didn’t have any suspicions about what Darren was doing, I was in complete shock when I found out.

‘I was hysterical when I had to watch the videos - I was disgusted. It was extremely difficult to watch them - to see someone you love that much get hurt by someone that you trusted.

She said: ‘I entrusted him with the care of the one main in thing in my life and for him to do that is a betrayal of my son, myself and everything I know. I will have to live with the error of my judgement until the day I day.’ That's the least she deserves for 'not noticing', IMO.

Agencies 'failed' murdered Charlie Hunt, says report
    [...]
Lancashire Safeguarding Children Board said it was not possible to predict the abuse but said lessons must be learned.

The multi-agency serious case review, published on Monday, concluded that there was evidence of "gaps in information sharing and planning between professionals and a failure to recognise the potential for harm" to Charlie, known as Child AB.

It added that there was an "over optimistic view of the capacity" of Charlie's mother to safeguard him.

"Whilst it was not possible to predict that Child AB would have been harmed in the manner it is alleged he was, there are significant and very familiar lessons that need to be learned about how professionals and agencies can work collaboratively to safeguard children," it said.

The report said that Charlie's mother, Laura Chapman, had a history of relationships in which she was the victim of domestic abuse and concerns had been raised about her parenting of her two older children when she lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Those children, who lived with her former partner - who is not Charlie's father - were subject to care proceedings after allegations he assaulted one of them.
    [...]

Ms Chapman was unaware of Newton's abuse of her son, which happened while she was at work, and the report underlines she was in no way responsible for what happened to him.

It said medical assessments did not consider child abuse in explaining Charlie's convulsions and bruising and said a scan "might have revealed abnormalities that would have raised questions about physical maltreatment".

There was also enough information held by the GP who saw Charlie to consider abuse and the failure to explore this further was also a "missed opportunity".

Although it was "extremely unlikely" that Newton would have been identified as a risk to Charlie there should have been a more cautious approach to his involvement with the family, the report said.

Authors have made nine recommendations of improving practice for all agencies, as well as more than 80 individual recommendations.

In a joint statement, Nigel Burke, chair of Lancashire Safeguarding Children Board, and Professor Nick Frost, chairman of Bradford Safeguarding Children Board, said: "The death of a young child is always tragic.

"It is heartbreaking for family and friends, particularly so when abuse is involved, and our thoughts remain with the family of this child."

They added that both boards had developed action plans to implement the recommendations, which were now under way.

I still find it hard to be coherent about this case. I have my problems with our justice and penal system, but when I compare them to other, more "civilized" nations' pathetic punishment, I'm fucking glad we are "uncivilized". Some people just need to suffer, and suffer horribly for a long, long time. I hope he will get "prison justice" since the courts don't seem to find this worthy of death or LWOP. I swear I would love to torture him to the point of death and then bring him back, over and over till I get bored. Then throw him naked into a bare, concrete-floored cell to live out his life without any human contact except for the guard who brings him dog food once a day. And play that video 24/7, forever.

There is NO such thing as cruel and unusual punishment in this case! What ever is done to him could never atone for what he has done.
