All Erik D. Griffin wanted to do was stop his 4-week-old baby from crying. Police said he accomplished that goal by suffocating little Nyir Griffin with a pillow, killing him.

Prosecutors said their investigation revealed that Griffin on Thursday — Veterans Day — placed a pillow over Nyir’s face to stop him from crying. Authorities said Griffin removed the pillow once the infant stopped crying.

But at that point, authorities said, Griffin noticed his son was no longer breathing. With the child unresponsive, Griffin reacted by leaving the residence while his child lay abandoned inside the house, authorities allege.

Nyir was later discovered by his maternal grandmother, who attempted to revive the unresponsive child, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Does no one tell new parents that sometimes babies just don't stop crying? That sometimes you can go through the mental checklist a dozen times, burping and massaging and changing and feeding and rocking and patting and doing the funky chicken, and they're still going to cry?

4 weeks old. That's small enough to stick someplace safe and secure and go outside for five minutes. Stick 'em in the crib - if you're not using it for lawn furniture - or even in the middle of the floor - if you don't have a pit bull. Go outside. Have a smoke. Have a sandwich. Hell, if it's that or killing the baby, have a joint and a beer. Maybe steer clear of the meth though. Go back in. Try the whole checklist again. If they're still screaming, and you're still feeling that pillow-snatching itch, GO BACK OUTSIDE. If you really can't hack it, chances are they'll pass out during your second or third trip to the back stoop. Problem solved.

Eventually you develop that special inner ear flap that dampens all screaming (and later, whining, tattle-telling and squabbling) and makes life more bearable. But only if you don't kill the baby.

Being at the DD has taught me a valuable lesson, you can never know and trust someone not to kill your kids, not even their own flesh and blood fathers. I was lucky bringing my babies up and their fathers didnt kill them but its even getting to the point where you cant trust your sisters, cousins, grandmothers and grandfathers. Im sure this crap has been going on for centuries, we just didnt have the news reporting capabilities we have today. Thank Morbid we have threads like song of the day and time wasters, otherwise this shit would be too much if this is all we had to read. I hate saying RIP to the baby, it doesnt help him any, but what else can I say. Sleep now cheated child, cheated out of a life, there are people who will make sure your father pays for what he did to you... and he dont look to sorry, probobly was thinking to himself, Im not paying child support for this little boy... Bastard, you can live the rest of your life in prison and you will never pay for what you have done, dont think you will ever even realize what you have done...

It disgusts me to read about men and especially fathers who are so irresponsible or insensible that they can't be trusted to take care of the children they make and live with. I hate it when these same men are described as "babysitting". If they are the father, it is definitely not babysitting, and if they are the live in boyfriend, "babysitting" is not indicative that he's a member of the household. What the hell do these guys think babies are like? Where do they get the idea that babies are quiet? TV?

The baby's death happened Friday, when Erik Griffin was babysitting his newborn son, Nyir Griffin, and a 16-month-old daughter, at the home they shared on the 400 block of St. Mary Street, said Joel Bewley, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office.

The home belongs to the baby's maternal grandmother, who discovered the dead infant and tried to revive him
