Summers County man arrested in child abuse case

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of toddler in Summers County. Wednesday night, authorities took James Meadows into custody. He's currently being held in Southern Regional Jail.

Meadows is the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother. He's accused of causing the injuries that led to the death of 18-month-old Isabella Hurley.

Meadows is expected to make his first court appearance on Friday.

Isabella Hurley was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon in Summers County. An autopsy revealed she had multiple injuries.

I knew this was another Wv post just by the mention of the county. Too bad he isn't out on bail, it is close to deer gun season.

I second that!! Please, please use a spoiler. It's hard enough to read, I can't imagine what we would feel seeing her little body lifeless.

RIP Isabella Danielle Hurley, such a beautiful name for such a sweet baby girl.

I understand everyones got the right to their own choice
I personally can kinda distance myself from these stories,even the worst ones I post
but pics make it to real,with a face
And I dont want to see that face on a morgue table,that would send me over I think
Very upsetting to family members also

The report shows some of her injuries were up to three days old. Investigators say the fatal injury occurred Thursday, the same day a neighbor called Summers County EMS. Isabella was reportedly at home with the mother's live in boyfriend at the time.

The 'autopsy' photos were actually released to the media by the Pathologist/Coroner, so I'm thinking they aren't so horrible to make us gasp at them. Still, heartbreaking! It's just as hard for me to look at photos of an abused child, the smiling and full of life photos, after their murders, knowing that potential is gone at the hands of cruel humans!

Isabella, you are precious, an Angel that God holds eternal. You may not have known joy here in this evil world, I have faith that you do now, overwhelming and loving joy.

Ahh, sometimes these mugshots can fool me. He looks just ordinary; but her? She looks as if she's imagining what you'd look like ripped open with your guts stuffed in your mouth. Shit. I've reached my limit with dead baby cases. I'm going to cover my Charlie with kisses and let him tear up the house.

BAIL denied for suspect in toddler's death

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- A Summers County judge has denied BAIL for a man charged in the death of his girlfriend's 18-month-old daughter.

The Register-Herald reported that 19-year-old James R.L. Meadows was charged with murder and death by a custodian after Isabella Danielle Hurley died last month in a Charleston hospital. The child's mother, 24-year-old Cristen Lynn Hurley, was charged with child abuse resulting in injury and child neglect resulting in death.

According to the West Virginia medical examiner, Isabella sustained brain and abdomen injuries. The West Virginia State Police said an autopsy report showed the injuries were inconsistent with Meadows' claim that the child fell off a couch and bed several times.

A Summers County woman has been sentenced for her part in the November 2010 death of her 18-month-old daughter, Isabella Danielle Hurley, according to a Summers County Circuit Court spokesperson.

Cristen Lynn Hurley, 24, of Hinton, was sentenced to one to five years for her Sept. 2 guilty plea to felony gross child neglect, a lesser included offense of count two of the original charge of child abuse resulting in injury and child neglect causing death.

Hurley’s sentencing follows the trial of her live-in boyfriend, James R.L. Meadows, 20, of Talcott, who was originally charged with murder and death by a custodian. Meadows was convicted Sept. 16 of second degree murder by a Monroe County jury.

During last month’s trial, Meadows, who took the stand, blamed Hurley for the injuries that caused Isabella’s death. Meadows originally told police the girl’s injuries came from a series of falls, but during his trial, he recanted his original statement, and said instead he had personally witnessed Hurley striking the child multiple times all over her body, blaming her for the Isabella’s injuries. He said he hadn’t told police before because he was covering for Hurley.
